Mega Man 4 Was (Almost) Perfect...

Ойындар

Mega Man 4 and its NES sequels are often regarded as "more of the same" and "forgettable". But more recently, people seem to be appreciating Mega Man 4-6. This made me curious to see how I was gonna feel about the game upon the revisit, and the results are...the game was ALMOST perfect. The video will explain how.

Mega Man 4 is my favourite game in the classic series for many reasons. • It introduces the Charge Shot which is so fun to use • The Level Design is great and creative • The Special Weapons are good (except Skull Barrier) • The Bosses are fun to fight because they have unique attack patterns • It also introduces Mid-game Stages like Dr Cossack’s Citadel • Great Soundtrack • the new Took weapons the Wire & Balloon are fun • & the new character Eddie is amazing because he gives you Extra Lives, Health/Weapon Energy & E-Tanks to aid you in your journey.

I agree. Except for few things. Skull Man's, Dust Man's, Ring Man's & Dive Man's weapons aren't that impractful for me, an few levels I'm not an fan of like Ring Man's, Dust Man's & Bright Man's stage and while the bosses having different patterns was nice, they go on an little bit long to kill, even with the weapon weaknesses. And some like Toad Man & Pharoah Man are pathetic in battle. But the rest I agree.

@@thomasblackwell9946 that is the whole point. its only supposed to protect you from 1 or 2 instant death hits. its not supposed to turn the game into easy mode like you probably want it to do. Mega Man 4 is a game from an era where 1 hit deaths were the norm in games. in Mega Man 4 you pretty much die in 2 or 3 hits from a boss. if you git gud & learn the boss attack patterns, you can easily block attacks with skull shield. running in close & doing massive damage to the boss with skull shield is usually only done by skilled players. unskilled players will just get hit & die. so I can see why people who aren't as skilled & haven't put much time into the game, don't find the skull shield useful.

My biggest problem with Mega Man 4 is that the Mega Buster will only start charging if you initially press the B button when you're in a state where you can shoot. For instance, if you have your finger off of B, take a hit, then hit B when you're in your stun state you won't immediately start charging when you come out of stun. You'll have to let go of B and press it again when you want to charge up. It's a minor annoyance, but it happens often enough to make me pass over MM4 when I want to play a late-era NES Mega Man game and go with MM5 instead, which doesn't have that problem.

Mega Man 4 is my favourite out of the NES games and probably up there with my favourite classic games. It keeps a nice balance where it controls well, has fun levels and good robot masters (although the RNG of most of them being influenced by distance can be exploited fairly easily. Toad Man is Toad Man, enough said. Ring Man and Skull Man have strict patterns.) Alongside that, I can find a fair use for most of the weapons in stages. Mega Man 4 is my personal favorite, despite the endgame being more of a casual romp than the main eight levels were. Having recently replayed both Legacy Collections, 4 was one of those games I enjoyed the most in the first LC. It's where I could tell they started having an actual direction for the franchise instead of just making a single game and hoping that one doesn't flop (the 1st game was lucky to be given a second chance in the first place, 2's gigantic success was unexpected and thus 3 suffered from "oh shoot we have to follow up on THAT now?!" syndrome imo). The presentation is a noticeable step up, and while the story kinda ends anticlimactically, it felt like a genuine effort to avoid the "same old" syndrome, by giving the illusion of replacing the big bad at first. And when it came to the game itself, it was one of the ones I felt the least frustrated playing; if I lost a live it often felt moreso my fault than the game's (bar that one jump for the E-tank in Skull Man's stage), as the level design felt tough but fair. I daresay it was the Mega Man game in the classic series that I enjoyed the most, as even 5 and 6 still had their share of BS at times despite being just as solid. I'd say it's my top favorite of the first Legacy Collection, followed by 2 and 5, and 6 not too far behind those. 1 is a game I could probably re-enjoy for the sheer novelty of old, so that leaves 3 in a... unfavorable position there.

While not my favorite Mega Man game, Mega Man 4 is for sure my favorite of the six original NES games. I think the game just gets so much right, especially with the soundtrack, bosses, stage designs, weapons, etc. Also, I use a space between Mega and Man, and tend to follow that format for every other character with that naming convention. My only exception is when I say 'Rockman'. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aside from the title logos' inconsistency with Mega Man's space, I believe the games follow this format too.

I think my only issue with MM4 is the slow health bar charging cutscene during the boss fights. I actually enjoy the Wily Castle stages a lot. The first one is the ultimate Met level (the shell enemies), and the music is one of the best of the NES era.

I enjoy 4 because of its difficulty, design, polish and the tools it provides you to make said difficult experience much easier. It’s also why I enjoy 9 so much. 4 and 9 have some of the best robot master weapons in the classic series yet are arguably the most difficult games (aside from 1) in the classic series. If you use the weapons the game provides it makes for a much easier experience by design.

While 4 may not be my favorite, there are some things about it that I find that make it decent at best for me, and I can consider to be part of the good NES lineup. A lot of my concerns with 4 were very well addressed and demonstrated already. In addition, I also have little nitpicks about it being harder to jump after a slide and a sort of “pause glitch” where you can reserve the charge of your Buster by switching weapons. In terms of personal preferences, I like an endgame with a single set of solid castle stages that have an impact on the story while not being too time consuming at the same time. The concept of revealing Wily as the true villain in classic Mega Man is fine with me, but I feel that the twist villain reveals were best executed in games like Mega Man 10 or Unlimited.

7 year old me loved the hell out of this game. It had everything from adrenaline inducing music to the hearty ones that hit you in the feels, all while traversing in an exciting journey through different environments sometimes in the deep and other times high in the sky. It was the adventure. The box and the manual promised heart thumping jumping and sliding into action with a cherry on top (Mega Buster), and it did indeed deliver. Mega Man 4 was my favourite and only title in the series but it also had a soul, and therefore will always be with me both physical and in spirit.

I call it "Mega Man". I rather enjoyed this video and I agree with your sentiment. Mega Man 4 is a solid game. Not perfect, but very good. While I understand some of the complaints towards it, I think the Charge Shot is a lot better than most people give it credit for. I also agree on 4's weapon lineup, minus the Skull Barrier, because this series, to me at least, didn't have a good shield weapon until Mega Man 7. At the end of the day, good video, and I'll be curious about what you have to say about Mega Man 5.

Fantastic review. It's really cool to see how Mega Man and Capcom improved over the years. Side Note: The No-Intro Database made me realize how inconsistent Mega Man is with it's one word/two words name structure. One day I used GBxCart (cartridge dumper) to transfer my save file to my computer. It uses No-Intro's name scheme, so I was shocked when it changed from two words: "Mega Man Battle Network" to one word "Megaman Battle Network". It's weird because the end credits and even the official website and eShops will spell it two words: "Mega Man Battle Network", but the logo is clearly one word: "Megaman Battle Network". My guess is No-Intro went with the logo as that's the most visible and rawest of official sources: what's on the Title Screen, Cartridge Label, Boxart, etc?

4:22 I've gotten to the point in my life where I refer to the character and mainline games as "Mega Man" but reference the spin-off series as "Megaman X", "Megaman Zero", "Megaman Z/X", "Megaman Legends", "Megaman Battle Network", and Megaman Star Force". I know that's not 100% accurate or w/e, it's just what I find most natural for me and have decided to do. At the end of the day, we all know what we're all talking about, even if we're choosing to use slightly different spellings from one another, so even if one formatting rubs some of us the wrong way, we should be able to take a deep breath and let it go, because it's all basically the same anyway.

While 3 is my personal favorite, 4 I believe is the "best balanced" classic Mega Man in that thanks to the Charge Shot being good but not overtuned, all bosses are equally valid first stages to tackle and all Robot Master weapons are useful in general cases in stages and not just in boss fights (or useless in general). This is the game fan projects should look to for an example of weapons design and balance. MM5 has only two or three weapons even worth considering using SOMETIMES and MM6 has the Jet and Power adapters basically render the entire boss weapon system irrelevant. I'm also reminded of a review of MegaMan Network Transmission. "This is only the worst parts of the Classic, X, and Network series slapped together. It's still a 7/10 game because even bad Mega Man is still a good game." No matter how much I nitpick any of my favorite Mega Mans, the series is Rockman solid.

Gotta say, 4 has become a title that I grew to appreciate over time, from both seeing vids covering it (mainly a little bit of nico and snupster) to replaying it (after a long time) myself on the anniversary collection. I really grew to like what the game did. Sure, it's not perfect by any means (no game is), but it has a lot more pros than cons. Introduced the charge shot which was a nice addition (no matter how many times certain folk will argue about it, it was a great upgrade and their obsessed with the old stuff), weapons were a set improvement compared to the first three games (no real duds, balanced set with their set niches/roles), great soundtrack (especially the complete works versions, man I love how they sound there, almost my preferred versions), and mostly solid levels (sure a few cheap spots admittedly but nothing that's too cheap). If anything my only real gripes was the checkpoint placement in the cossack stages (I still remember when I discovered that in cossack 1 and was flabbergasted, though unsure if wily stages in 4 had that as well) and the bosses (mainly the RMs) being a bit too overwhelming with the damage (granted if you do know what you're doing with the AI you can kinda alleviate some bits but it's something not many would know om hand) Still though relatively solid game, one of my favorites alongside 6, 7, and 8 for me. As for the title stuff, I mainly type it out as one word but sometimes do it as two, just depends. Though never noticed that bit with them before. Anyway good video as always

I always really liked the robot master design of this game because these guys are such weirdos. When I first rented the game as a kid, I was scratching my head trying to figure out what sort of weapons Ring Man, Toad Man, Dust Man and Pharaoh Man could have. I thought I knew what Drill Man's weapon would be, but no, it's a bomb. I just somehow felt like they were being more creative with the designs. I honestly think we didn't get another rogue's gallery this good until Mega Man & Bass.

A truly great game! This was when Capcom had finally figured out the Mega Man formula and was starting to comprehensively put it all together. This one of my favorite Mega Man games of all time! Yeah, it's not perfect, but it's really just fine tuning at this point that Capcom was still working on. Also, the "P" for Mega Man's arm cannon always stood for "plasma cannon" and the lemon shaped pellets were "plasma pellets" in my mind when I play 1-3. I don't recall where I got that from, I remember seeing it mentioned somewhere (probably in a gaming magazine back in the day) so I just ran with it from there. Obviously, I still write "Mega Man" with a space. :)

So interesting to see the different perspectives here. Megaman was my favorite series of games. Two was my favorite game I ever played when it came out, and I was so hyped for three, buying magazines ane getting previews, bought it in cash at release. But when four came out, I just didnt enjoy it very much. The gameplay was fine. No real issues there. The story didnt gel for me for me that much. But the biggest thing was I hated how the charge shot removed the benefit of using special weapons, punished you for going quickly through the stage (safest strat is to always wait for a shot to charge, inch forward, take a shot at an enemy, then wait for abother charge shot to be ready before moving forward again), and it made this piercing, super annoying warble that youll be hearing the entire game, and cuts out the other sound channels. EgoRaptor's video about Simeon's whip in supercastlevania applies exactly equally to MegaMan's charge shot, it removes the need for any other weapon, but at least with Simeons whip, you dont have to charge it, and it doesnt go WHOOPWHOOPWHOOPWHOOP

By the 4th ones, the Mega Men series got it good, heck, I even love Mega Man Zero 4 on the Game Boy Advance the best, probably because I found it not terribly punishing (even on the Normal, non-easy, routes), doesn't contain annoying gimmicks like Zero 3's (I think) grappling whip weapon, and I can actually beat it! I dont know anything about Mega Man Battle Network, since I was never interested in its game play, and that's just due to my interests, and no fault of the games!

The last time I touched it, I was going through the Legacy Collection, and ended up having a blast with it (funnily enough, I also somehow ended up liking MM1 way more than I had expected). I think it then dawned on me. Previously, I had always tried to blitz the series, via Anniversary Collection, and 4 would, without fail, always be the point where I'd run out of steam. As such, I was so generally sick of Mega Man, that I conflated that with poor game design. During this recent attempt at the series, I took much longer breaks between each game and could tackle them more fully (The rewind feature also helps, ha).

It's not just the bosses...the regular enemies hit like tanks, too. Methinks they leaned in a lil' too hard on the number four aspect, as four units of damage seems to be the baseline of damage dealt per hit you take and only worsens from there. The Centaur Flash from Megaman 6 is what the Flash Stopper should've been. It's also kinda what X5's Dark Hold and Megaman 2's Time Stopper should've been, too. The Buster could've been explained better in the opening narrative; Rockman World 5/Megaman V for the Gameboy did a better job at explaining the Rock Arm/Mega Arm.

MM4 had the best set of Robot Master weapons (or at least tied with MM9). MM4 seems to have fixed a lot of issues with MM2 (particularly with weapons being unbalanced): - Flash Stopper is a much better Time Stopper - Pharaoh Shot is a much better Atomic Fire with enough utility from Metal Blade to make it perhaps the second best weapon in the series (it's not totally broken like Metal Blade) - Ring Boomerang is Quick Boomerang + piercing - Drill Bomb is better than Crash Bomber in many ways (cheaper), but doesn't seem as powerful Skull Barrier, while being the worst weapon in MM4, does one thing better than Leaf Shield: you can actually move while it's activated. Leaf Shield is way more resilient when standing still, though.
