    In my headcanon, Gordon retired from pulling the express in 1990, and was repainted into a darker shade of the NWR's blue livery, but regained the LNER letterings on his tender sides, and he was also given the number 4469 from his scrapped cousin, Gadwall (Sir Ralph Wedgewood I), despited retaining his number 4 on the bottom of his front bufferbeam.

    It a good choice for Gordon to retire as not only has he has outclassed by future locomotives, but it made him realize that he’s getting old and that he’s on Edward’s level. The final one is that mechanically, Gordon being a steam locomotive still pulling express trains until 2011 was possibly difficult because building steam takes a long time to wait

    In my AU, Gordon is basically like the Doc Hutson of the RWS. He is retried and has gotten used to local speeds but when needed to pull trains similar to The Wild Nor' Wester or tourist trains, He will be willing to go fast again and after he's done, He gets back to his limits.

    As the A1/A3s were being withdrawn from express services from the 1950s and 1960s, Gordon should have been taken out of service from the main express (the Wild Nor'Wester) much sooner. I don't know why it's better to say that he retired in 2011 when Pip and Emma were bought into the NWR at the time, what purpose would Gordon be able to continue pulling the main express until the 2010s?

  • @megariderfire1994

    @megariderfire1994

    I can see your sentiment but personally I don't mind Gordon being withdrawn from the express until the early 2010s, it's amazing how exactly 90 years of living let Gordon accept his decision on being replaced when he finally did, I also find it poetic how Gordon finally retired (and got a post-retirement epilogue story on top of that. Even when he retired, he was still able to find some occasional success in life without having the prestige as the top link express engine) in the final book of the series. ...On the other hand, objectively speaking, I can imagine even if it was the final book where Gordon finally retired, I can't deny those events could still happen earlier. Like say, let's say the final story could still happen a decade earlier in 2001 (Shaving off a decade off from the 9 decade lifespan to 8 decades) and NOTHING would change....and besides, the book right before it ("Thomas & Victoria", really should've been a different book called "Edward & Victoria" tbh) was supposed to be released in 1997 instead of 2007 (Damn, prolonged for a decade) and had Chris gotten his way with the publishing date of his second-to-last book, it's still theoretically possible for Gordon to be retired earlier than 2011.

    6:13 here’s the thing though , if Gordon was demoted to tourist trains it would defy your point from earlier, that being the NWR is a company that earns revenue, if Gordon is demoted to just tourist trains he would mainly just be stuck in the Shed like Edward was in the very first book, and you got to remember the Flying Scotsman may pull railtours and that but it’s how often it does after all it did take 8 years for the engine to have an overhaul.

    I'd like to point out that, according to the Railway Series' timeline, the North Western, Arlesdale and Skarloey Railways were part of British Railways for a while after World War 2, which means that many BR rules were followed for quite sometime. However, given how much the books ( and later, the TV series, titled "Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends" initially) helped to continue attracting tourists to Sodor, it was decided that none of Sodor's railways would follow the recommendations laid out by Dr Beeching. Therefore, all ties with British Railways were severed, allowing each of Sodor's railways to be run independently, hence Gordon's tenure as the primary express engine lasted for a significantly longer period.

    I feel like Gordon should have retired from Enterprising Engines to Gordon the High Speed Engine, but I would make GTHSE have take place from 1975-1982 because it completes Gordons character arc and Pip and Emma would've just been built. Also I think that GTHSE should have ended with Gordon accepting retirement and the purchase of Pip and Emma.

    In my take on Gordon’s retirement, Gordon was reassign to pull a lighter express service which was named “the Sudrian Flyer.” It almost the same as the Wild-nor-Wester, but with a few extra stops. 1. Tidmouth (Start of service) 2. Wellsworth (To get help from banker) 3. Cronk (Middle Stop) 4: Crovan’s Gate (Same as Wildnorwester) 5. Barrow in Furness (End of Service) He also handles special rail services similar to Flying Scotsman and will sometimes run the Fat Controller to the Mainland for meetings with the Railway Board. For this, he was also given a pair of LNER Corridor Tenders recovered from a scrap yard. He only uses one tender on express services and uses both when on Railtours.

    I'd say Gordon retired somewhere in 1995 because he wanted to pull goods never knowing how good it was pip and Emma was sold because they were not longer... Well useful. If Gordon retires from pulling the express its either henry james or Rebeccas duty to pull it after Gordon's retirement in express, I'd say rebecca takes the express from the mainland and henry from knapford station. If henry takes place of knapford express then Gordon could've expected to take freight cars in the quarry or the flying kipper. But honestly Gordon teasing edward and james would be a bad deal same with percy and Toby, considering their older than him, Edward being 128, James as 112, Toby being 110 and then percy being 124.

  • @jaanshersaeed4541

    Yeah Gordon retiring from the express works not just because of the exchanging at Barrow becoming a hassle with Pip and Emma just being able to go straight to London but also his age by the 21st Century being a factor and how it would take a toll on him. He could still run faster passengers services occasionally but not ones in high demand where they have to connect with the Mainland and just be for locals on Sodor. I’ve also thought since The Flying Kipper goes all the way to Manchester Henry would’ve no longer been able to go straight there since 1968 anyways and there likely would be exchanges anyways afterwards but like with the express it would also likely be a hassle to constantly exchange at Barrow too so maybe in the 21st Century say a Class 66 would be brought over to take over The Flying Kipper full time and go straight to Manchester.

    I’ve also wondered what it would be like if some more of Gordon’s brothers were to survive and escape scrap (was thinking Great Northern could work being the first member in real life along with Papyrus due to it’s 108 mph record) though at the same time it can be best to just accept and respect what happened in real life history. And I also wondered what it would be like if one of Thomas’ brothers were to be saved from scrap (I’m surprised an E2 didn’t get preserved in real life with the popularity of the RWS and Thomas being one of the main faces) but again sometimes it’s best to just accept history. Though I’ve also wondered what it would be like if Gordon along with Edward were to die being killed off badly which I think would be a major impact as both have been the two most major influences on the NWR; with Edward being the wise old one that’s ready to help everyone and knows what’s happening that everyone goes to with Gordon the main flagship and express engine for the longest time who’s had the railway hierarchy going with deciding how things should go status wise among the engines.

    Obviously the thought of Gordon retiring from the express is incredibly bittersweet, since that's what we all know and love him for. But it's as you've quite literally rambled about for the entire video _(no really the amount of times you essentially repeated the same thing to drive the point home was kinda funny ngl)_ : all things come to an end. Therefore, it is important to cherish and celebrate life to the fullest while you can. As for where big blue would end up, I agree that the local may be a tad too much of a drop for him. A fast commuter service not unlike the kind that the trains where I live run would do him well I think. Excursions work perfectly well too, maybe even having him pull the express again every once in a while, kind of like what Flying Scotsman did for the 40th anniversary of his first non-stop run from London to Edinburgh.

  • @tjmfarming9584

    Ok Gordon retiring from the express in 2011 is a bit of a stretch… and really if you think about it I’m surprised that the NWR didn’t replace him from the Wild’nor’Wester sooner. If it were me, I’d say Gordon might’ve been better off retiring from the WNW somewhere between 1993-2001. At least, taking him off the top-link highest important train and putting him on a slightly more relaxed service schedule-wise. Realistically speaking, one would think that given the fact that the A3’s were being given modifications as late as the early 1960’s, they’d have a fighting chance of expanding their lifespan into the 1970’s and 80’s. Gordon isn’t portrayed as having such modifications in the books, but we also know that the Rev W Awdry said the illustrations are inaccurate some of the time. Therefore, it’s not outlandish to think that Gordon could’ve received the same changes as his sibling-engines like an A3 boiler, double chimney etc. except for deflectors, as Scotsman would’ve pointed this out in enterprising engines if Gordon was wearing them…
