As a RWS purist myself, I can understand some of the points he’s coming from. For example, I never really put thought into it but 87546 and 98462 being pained NWR blue for being “bad engines” really doesn’t make much sense when you put some thought into it, and I haven’t really seen this before, but Henry is having a Fowler tender is an absolute NO NO (I can put up with Gordon)

Here's a bit of an AU I've had in the back of my head for a while: Sandy from AEG wouldn't have been a a rail speeder, but instead would be a Ruston and Hornsby 48DS diesel shunter.

Really, I think it all depends on aspects of canon that you want to stick to, as well as not enforcing the idea of purely sticking to canon onto others. Obviously on the peak of the "challenging the canon" iceberg, there's the obvious kind of "canon" that you flat out want to reject or completely rework... (like bad characters, bad stories, etc) and then there are canon that you think are good but want to either have your twist on it or give it more depth. And of course as you go deeper... there's personal AUs (all your questions, your personal theories, your "What ifs", "How would...", "I wonder...", etc) that you can burn brightly with all the ambition and creativity you can squeeze out and go all out on and decide what you want to do. *"Challenging the Canon" Iceberg (Ranking from the peak to further into the bottom)* - Rejecting the "bad/heavily flawed canon" - Trying to fix or completely rework the "bad/heavily flawed canon" - Giving more depth and expanding on canon with lost/underutilized/wasted potential - Giving more depth and expanding "already good canon", giving your own twists on it - Exploring Alternate Realms of Possibilities, ask yourself the deeper questions and taking advantage of those theories and "What ifs" - Going all out with drastic changes and twists for personal AUs (Maybe there's more I might be missing but I'm pretty sure someone out there could come up with a better iceberg for this than I could)

For me It depends, some segments could be expanded Upon but never were and i find It a shame, although i am glad that the things that were expended Upon turned out as It Is...

You know, there are OCs like Dudley or Alfred that have struck the fandom different because they actually have a character and THET ARE NOT A BLOODY E2. Except for Timothy, he's cool. Whenever he's done right...or should I saw wrong because technically "right" would be for him to be a demon train but he's better when he isn't that.

I think the E2s OCs can work...depending on the purpose and the vision the creator of said OC has for them. Like Timothy seems to fit the bill of being a Creepypasta OC, while the likes of say ToyTrains4u's Tom Moss (even though he's supposed to be a cousin to Thomas) fits the purpose of being an OC clearly intended to be targeted towards an entertaining a younger kid audience given that KZreadr's content. E2 OCs that at least have a clear brief set for them to fulfill are probably okay at best.

I've Ocs that I haven't made public yet and I don't know when that will be. I have 1 human OC and one Engine OC, who has a name and can be a bad engine in one universe and a good engine in another universe. While he may have a name, I don't have a class for him or even know what kind of engine he actually is.

1:22 I agree! I hate how every engine has a fowler tender, I think there needs to be more representation when it comes to tenders. Henry should have a black 5 tender. Gordon should have an LNER tender, Edward should have the tenders the K2s have, James is the only one in my headcannon who still has his fowler tender.

I also agree that 98462 and 87546 should not be blue, they should in fact be green if their from the LNER. In fact Percy doesn't even need to be a freelance design I've seen a take on him with a metropolitan basis, Though personally I like Percy as Cardiff Railway NO6, or as he was known on the GWR, NO1339.

I mean not EVERY engine. Just Edward, Henry, Gordon and James. But I understand your point. It's fine for only Edward and James to have Fowler tenders, but Gordon and Henry's should look more accurate to their real-life counterparts

Well, while I do like sticking to canon, I do like to add in my own little changes and even rewrite a few things too. For me, it's all on the 50/50 side. Or something like that. IDK tbh... Lol.

Yeah, i don't know why people stick to the og canon. I feel like it blocks creativity and imagination if you don't at least put one or two twists into it. This video i understand

Me three! I've made up my own universe for Thomas and his friends.

Some stuff in my universe like hotr tgd and some good movies will remain as their canon versions for the most part but others rewriten

I feel like there’s a time and a place for canon. If I want to tell a Thomas story that follows the rules established by either the railway series or the television series, that’s perfectly fine. But if I want to do my own thing entirely, I think that should also be allowed. And that acceptance should go for anyone else. I’ll admit, there are some changes I don’t agree with when people do their own take. For example, if someone changed to Gordon to be an LMS engine, I would probably disagree with that take since it annihilates his relationship with Flying Scotsman. But I would still be interested to see what story they could tell with this new interpretation of Gordon, even if it’s not what I would do. With all that being said, I also wouldn’t describe following canon as “boring“ as when executed correctly can actually be rather useful. Limitations invite creativity. Like let’s say you want to adapt a railway series story, but you’re following the canon of the TV show. Well, now you have to work with the engines the show has access to which creates fun situations to fill in the blanks. Like I said, there’s a time and a place for canon.

Honestly, that Awdry put Fowler Tender on engines like Gordon and Henry really intrigues me. In my view, this Tender can be used by engines such as Edward, James, or Emily, i myself acquired that in my AU my Emily had a Fowler tender (also a dome), but i don't think this tender can be used on anyone.

I totally agree with that statement, you can only have the same thing people do over and over again until it gets boring. Plus, I think people making AU’s is very fun since you get to decide how you want Sodor to be. If some want to stick to canon that’s cool but don’t force it onto other people. And besides I’ve been wanting to do my own headcanon videos for a long time but I hope to get around to it someday as I have a ton of ideas for it!

My series combines TV and Railway series events with some other things I added. I only sprinkled in a few cannon bits for consistency, as I don't want anything to do with AEG. Nothing for all engines exists in my series (except for Bruno). Also, there are two characters in my series who are modified GWR night owls.

I agree with you by a lot , I’ve made my own au where I change many things like one of them being: the tender engines keeping their original tenders with the fowler tenders being spares.

Thank you for not making it like Scrapyard Studios' problem with sticking to the TV Series for ideas, because the railway series was always fictional and you said it yourself multiple times that Awdry's illistrationd are always wrong. Even if the TV Series isn't considered an actual thing, that shouldn't stop people from combining the TV Series and the RWS Series, and it shouldn't stop people from using both in their AUs

Speaking of the loaned engines, WHY DO THR HIT ERA CHARACTERS COME TO SODOR IN VIBRANT COLORS????? SHOULDNT THEY BE IN PROPER LIVERIES FROM THEY'RE RESPECTIVE RAILWAYS

I agree, you can do whatever you want to change or make in your my ideal, au / alternate universe

In my headcanon: 1. Edward and James are the NWR's first two engines to receive two Fowler tenders each, but Henry was rebuilt into an LMS Black 5, and had his own tender ever since, and as for Gordon, he used to have a Fowler tender after his rebuild in Crewe, but was given an LNER 8-wheeled corridor tender and also a spare LNER Group Standard tender after being rebuilt into an A3 towards the end of my rewrite of "Gordon Takes a Tumble". 2. Jinty and Pug are now owned by the Sodor Railways Police Force even after being transferred to Sodor. 3. Reginald (Thomas' brother) now works on the Peel Godred Aluminium Workshops (part of the Sodor Aluminium Company) after the Lead Mines in Toryreck closed down. 4. Hawin (the Little Blue Engine) and Dane (1020) now work at the Peel Godred Branch Line with its electric engines. 5. Despite Victoria being temporarily used as Toby's Vintage Train, she was returned to and reunited with Albert and Helena after the events of "Thomas and Victoria", where Toby was given Museum Coaches to become part of his special train. 6. Duck's GWR number is 5751 (because it states that the real 5741 did not really worked at Paddington), so that means he would've worked at Paddington until the end of the Second World War and was allocated to Reading on 15th June 1947, Barry on 20th May 1950 and Taunton on 3rd October 1953, almost two years before moving to Sodor. 7. The Great Crovan's Gate Fire happened in 1917 after a chain reaction between a leaking gas and a burning gunpowder load from some of its vans. 8. Emily was used to be the Sodor and Mainland Railway's No. 4 engine after she arrived in 1889, despite she was numbered 5 for the GNR. However, after the Sodor and Mainland Railway shut down as a result of bankruptcy in 1900, she returned to the GNR and worked there for another 4 years before being put to storage in an unused shed near Doncaster Works for the next few decades until being brought back to Sodor after Gordon went to Crewe Works to be rebuilt after an accident while pulling the Midnight Special. 9. Although Thomas arrived on Sodor in 1920, he was repainted NWR Blue with red stripes, and was numbered 1 during the Grouping of 1923. 10. The LMS was not only involved in an agreement with the NWR, but also the LNER, the Southern Railway, and the GWR were also involved in January 1925.

As someone who mostly follows canon, I wholeheartedly agree with your point here. Now as for the loaned engines being painted in NWR colours, could it work if you headcanon that the NWR and engine’s owners agreed to paint them in those liveries for an experiment?

I made an AU and i like it, but i think i sticked to Canon a little bit and its kinda boring sometime. That why i made another AU which is basically a more Edgier version with Unnecesarily Large NWR and doesnt very sticked to Canon

I do have my own au (witch is my series) and i dont change much about the class i mainly change the history and like henry and percy duck and Oliver got apple green paint most of the engines running boreds are black lady is maroon with yellow lining henry and bce have a bad history with each other and there brother's basically small changes to change the story like Edward having something bad happen to him on the fr etc

I actually find this true since most of the people don't care about the canon and love to make their own stories about the thomas and friends franchise and they legit just like adding things that fit right in their opinion like me on how they rename famous fanmade engines that awdry created himself or other people that create engines that could be good addition to their show.

I don't have a problem with gordon having a flower tender in the tvs but in the rws that is too small

Yeah do have a point with sticking with cannon kinda sucks which makes it more fun making your own takes on the sorce materials.

I can see two sides sticking with canon Actually shows how much you love The source material and their characters To the point when you write them It feels believable for the character to do a certain action However. Sticking way too close so it makes you feel like the writer of the show Which may be depending on how you feel about it On the other hand. Bring your own AU actually gives you the idea of what they could do if they're in a different situation.think you're even doing something different even if they're not in their original forms. But does have a cautionary tale of make them too different and all you have is a character.That's nothing like the original all but in name Especially if they are the opposite of their core character You might as well make a O.c with those character traits

AU's are the best thing in this fandom, some might be awesome, and some might me cringe, it doesn't matter, you can do whatever you want, it's your mind, it's your cannon, thx for coming to my tedtalk

Probably would get slaughtered for tbis but... some of the engines would probably look better with a Vanderbilt tender or something from ALCo/ Baldwin/Lima like Henry and Gordon.

I’m fine with it as long as there’s at least something different. What I would do is rewrite the crappy characters and stories, find a way to put the RWS and TVS timelines and maps together in a way that makes sense, and maybe include a few actually good and interesting OC’s like Dudley, Richard, and maybe Alfred. The only E2 oc I would allow in my universe would be Timothy because he’s the most interesting out of them but like Alfred, I’m just not sure if I would include him or Alfred because they’ve both have been in so many au’s that Idk if people would want to see them again. I mean no offense to anyone who makes E2 OC’s but I feel like the LBSC E2 is kinda overrated for an OC.

0:40 i made my tender engines have different tenders for example in my au gordon keeps his corridor tender but james and edward both get a lner gresley 4,200 gll tender and henry gets a lner corridor tender when he is rebuilt into a lms jubilee class (to be honest a lms jubilee with lner corridor tender looks pretty cool) emily and molly are the only engines with fowler tenders in my au. what do you think?

2:30 in my au edward is a midland railway class 2 (without the 2 window cab) making him a normal class 2 and he is also the prototype and the only surviving member of his class

I've rebooted my universe In my Canon I'm trying to stick to what Awdry established for example all the characters have the same basis and backstories with slight differences but there are some new characters for example 3,4 and 5 are not Henry Gordon and James they're six seven and nine

I like some AUs and I do like parts from the official cannon, my problem is that some people decide to literally change everything, different AUs are fine but it’s going too far when people change the entire storyline, events, characters, engine basis’ and more all at the same time.

I’m definitely not an RWS purist but over the past few years I’ve come to know a lot about the history of Sodor and the way I look at it is that you shouldn’t put someone down just because they have different ideas than you. Fanon and AU’s are labeled those for a reason, and aren’t meant to be interpreted as 100% accurate recreations of the original source material. If somebody creates a series sticking to canon, cool, if somebody wants to venture off and make their own universe using elements from the canon, also cool. Just let people enjoy doing what they’re doing, canon or not

Yeah, even I have my own AU. But if you're gonna do an AU, it better not be SF with a massive disaster happening on Sodor with the Story being written like a Diary of a Wimpy Kid novel.

I have two AU and one of them is a mix of RWS And Alternate History basically and people say that it's bad to mix the RWS and Alternative history I think it's because people in this fandom never mix alternative history and Thomas except Percy and the beast productions

It’s more fun to make a au then follow the rules of one because you have to stick to canon so much it gets annoying

In my opinion canon is like a bread Just plain and simple but with a bit imagination you could transform it into a baguette or a deep dish pizza or something The rules are already there but you could expand the rules to anywhere and a little unrealistic is fine as long as its not too unrealistic like a bread glove

Some of the characters I happen to change the basis but I keep the rest the same as they are: Thomas: NWR T1 Class James: LBSCR K Class Percy: CR 264 Class with GWR 1361 cab Ferdinand: GWR Dean Goods Hank: United States Army 101 (this class of engine help out in Europe during WW1) Norman: BR Class 31

I mean can’t your “cannon” or “au” whatever they bloody are, just be an add on to what’s already established? Like the only things I’d change are things like the liveries and designs to be more accurate to a real railway, any add on on would just be like a story where a real engine visits or something, then returns. So say Stepney could have visited sodor and come back and then later been plinthed. If you pretend sodor existed. The engines personalities would have been peoples interpretations on what noises they made, Awdrys stories were what gave them more obvious personalities. It’s like when you name your car or something and you imagine what it’s saying.

I like to think of it as one big gaslight! Or even like a what if? no I don’t mean what if the engines had faces? They don’t. When you make your own story it’s a story within the real world.

I know this sounds weird, but PLEASE DON'T ATTACK ME! But I like the original storyline of The Magic Railroad with P.T. Boomer! HEAR ME OUT! The final version of Magic Railroad is stupid! It makes no sense! How can Diesel 10 crashed Lady and then she disappears?! The talking tumbleweed was so dumb! So there, I'm sticking to the original cut as canon because if you're going to make TATMR canon in your series, at least include the original storyline with Boomer! If any has a problem with that, I don't care! Sorry, I needed to get that out off my chest.

*Boring* you say? So, by this exact logic, you shouldn't have a problem with AEG then. *Right?* Cheeky snarkiness aside, point taken. Also, a pretty good point on how loaned engines like 87546 and 98462 probably wouldn't have been painted in the NWR livery in fact. I'm personally not one to "impose" canon on fanons when I see them because I'm just not that kind of guy. I may not necessarily be crazy about some of the changes some people make in their AUs: for example, changing Thomas' basis. I'm sorry, but nothing fits him better than an E2. Those were the best-looking tank engines ever built by a country mile: the rest aren't even close. There was one AU I saw recently where Thomas, Edward, Henry, and Gordon all had their basis changed and I hated that. But in the end, I don't worry about what people add or change too much, because 1.) It's their own take on the characters/universe and it's interesting to see what things people have in mind; and 2.) Because I didn't do it lol I have my own OC as well as stories which I've been developing for some time and can't wait to begin work on once I get some of my other (unrelated) stories out of the way. I'll also be making some small changes in the main universe (RWS, TVS, CGI, and all specials in between), most of which are meant to try and improve on some of its shortcomings. For the most part though, I'm sticking with the canon. Call me boring if you want. I missed the part where that's my problem.

Allow to me clarify; When I say canon is boring, I’m not talking about say the logic behind rules, like for example engines despite having their faces still to their rails. I meant as in the same railway history, same locomotive roster, same ideas been by other creators (take Gordon always being portrayed as grumpy or completely arrogant, or even 87546 and 98462 just being used.) Glad we can have an agreement on that if there were any loaned engines on sodor, they would likely not be repainted into NWR liveries since in the books (and this how I am seeing it), there was implication on why they have those liveries. Well good for you, if you think Thomas is good as an E2 then good for you and something while I agree in terms of shape, just for me on a size scale especially when I was comparing to Gordon’s irl basis, it just doesn’t suit me. But hey you like the E2s, you like them, I don’t think they’re bad locomotives it’s just they just aren’t for me when coming down to how I view Thomas. Honestly good luck with your projects, hope they go far. Ok let’s say this, just because I said an idea is boring, doesn’t mean you’re boring, I believe there’s a difference between an idea and a person. Like sure an idea can be boring if used too much with no twists or own interpretations, that doesn’t mean the person is boring. (Even tho the AEG part is a joke, I never mentioned it, since to me that shit ain’t Thomas. Because when I envision Thomas, I don’t just think of a E2 painted in blue, no I think of locomotives with faces that act like locomotives in real life where they to their rails and face railway based problems, events, and situations. I could go a lot of examples but I won’t since this comment would be way too long).

Well... The channel Cody's Railway made a custom showcase where engines like Edward, Henry and Gordon didn't have fowler tenders and he dared to say "Cuz they look stupid with those behind". I gotta be really with the fandom but the TVS models shouldn't be use in trainz adaptations they just look so off place especially when people use realistic engines next to them. And... The E2 oc's are the other side of the coin...

I like doing headcannon, for example in my headcannon thomas' brothers are: Timothy (100) Reginald (101) Alec (102) Young tucker (103) Adam (104) Thomas (105) Buddy (106) Emma (107) Nick (108) Chris (109 And yes, i used e2 ocs. PLS DON'T KILL ME XD

@@ArticFogI recommend making a plan (like a script or something to write on) then test the waters with recording from certain angles. Also maybe try to find some ideas to put in and take inspiration from.
