Restoring Playstation 3 Slim with No Power - Console Restoration & Repair

I will restore this broken PS3 slim that has no power at all. I will also remove the yellowing and give the console a basic clean up. The console has no power at all, fault like this is typically because of broken power source, but in this case the issue is with main board.
I started the project with disassembly. The console needs a special safety torx tip to open it. Link to my screwdriver set is at the bottom of this description. Next I used method called retrobrighting to remove the yellowing from the plastic parts. The process is explained in more detail in this video: • How to remove yellowin...
Here's also a video to build the heat controlled UV box for the process: • Making the Ultimate Re...
Now the tricky part, there are not any available schematics for this exact model of PS3 that I could find. But there are some available that are a little similar which provide some hints what might be the issue. www.psdevwiki.com/ is a great place to look for this information. I knew that even in standby mode the red led should be on, so I knew the issue must be between the power source (which I confirmed to be working as it should) and the red LED. First I searched info on the switch boards (www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Switch_...) I can see the red LED is powered from the Syscon SW2-30x power chip. That 3.3V was not coming in but the switch board was getting 5V straight from the power source. This made me think the syscon was faulty. I found pinout for the chip www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Templat... this pinout is for different model of PS3 slim but it seemed to be very close. The sheet on the link lists standby voltages for each pin of the chip as well as other information. The list is gathered by hobbyists so it might not be 100% reliable. I could see that pin 6 from syscon goes to the red LED. That pin was not putting out the 3.3V. The chip also has 2 separate 3.3V input rails. They are called EVER_A and EVER_B. My console was missing the voltage coming from the EVER_B. Now the list says both EVER_A and B come from voltage regulator Mitsumi 463A. But that is where my model of the console is different, I don't have Mitsumi 463A at all. I had these separate smaller regulators. So after long search I was able to conclude the 3.3V power should come from the regulators I show on the video. The regulators were getting power input but no output. So I decided to try to replace them. Here's also a picture of the necessary schematics for a model that has the Mitsumi regulator: www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/images/... As Sony has not provided us with the schematics I can't be 100% sure my explanation here was absolutely correct. But I got it working so I must be on the right track.
Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed the video!

Nice restoration! A lil advice: never blow at a fan with a compressor. It can spin up above its designed RPM and there is a chance to do damage to the bearing. The PS3 Slim equipped with 3 different cooling fans during its lifecycle, each have its own rated speed. Judging from the Nidec fan its a 2000/2500/3000 series modell.

Bought a black slim version used at GameStop in 2009 or 2010. It was a birthday present to myself. I got it just in time as my sibling had bought a first gen 80GB PS3 off of a crackhead for $60 and IT STILL WORKED! (I could've shaken him for even taking the guy up on the offer, because he had not tested it beforehand. Or maybe the guy had stolen it from someone...my sibling did not ask questions 😅). The console overheated easily, however, an issue with all of those models. It lasted him a year with heavy use, not too shabby for $60, I say. Shortly after it breathed its last, I got mine and I was happy to bring some joy back into my brother's life as he was definitely sad when his console died. Small town with nothing else to do. I don't play video games as much as him, so he used mine way more than me. He's the one that got God of War 3 and it blew the whole family away with its stunning opening. Good times 😊

As some people have said that the PS3 is a bitch to work software wise? I can't imagine how much hard work they had to do to make everything in the PS3 work together hardware wise. You did a fantastic job! I'm sure the PS3 modding community and wishful thinkers out there who want a lot of the PS3 library on the PS5 is gonna love this. :)

To Odd Tinkering: How long have you been repairing electronics? When and where did you learn to repair electronics? To this fine intellectual community: is there a certain course you guys take to know and understand PCBs and all the little components? I admire all of Odd Tinkering's work. When I look at the comments it seems like everyone is smart and familiar with electronics. Did I miss a course in school? 😅 keep up the awesome work, and i wish everyone a blessed day 🙏
