Broken Playstation 3 Controller Restoration & Repair

I bought this broken Playstation 3 controller to restore it. The controller presses the buttons by itself, additionally the battery is dead and the controller is quite dirty and yellowed.
After I disassembled the controller, I cleaned all the plastics and put the yellowed parts in my retrobrighting box. Retrobrighting is a chemical process that removes the yellowing from the plastic. Here is my tutorial to the process: • How to remove yellowin...
And my tutorial to making the box: • Making the Ultimate Re...
Next it was time to fix the controller. This type of problem often appears when the small piece of foam shiwn in the video gets old and too soft. When that happens it won't apply enough pressure to the pieces that need to make contact. I usually replace them with a new piece of EVA foam. I've also seen people add multiple layers paper or tape under the foam. I also cleaned the electronics with isopropyl alcohol.
Finally I replaced the old dead battery with a new one. Thanks for watching I hope you enjoyed the video!

@@ms.pirate ah, yeah I have a earlier DualShock 3 model where the motors are screwed in. And the rumble motors break off so easily. So I opened it up to replace the little foam pad like he did in the video. And two wires just completely snapped off the board. Luckily I was able to get them soldered back down and I cleaned it all up so now it works fine. It’s now my main controller :)

I replaced the foam with the modern foam that comes in the package of modern electronics with is more dense and sturdy and filled the gaps on the plastic placement in the case to prevent it to deform in the future.

As soon as you started removing the motor, I was just thinking, "NO DON'T DO IT! IT'S A TRAP!!!" And while the foam does degrade, I also use a fine metal polish to gently bring back the shininess on the contacts on the ribbon cable, then clean both it, and the carbon pads on the board with iso. Might start adding new foam now though.

Another thing you can do with the contact pad (if you don't have any of the materials) is cover it with a small layer of tissue paper snd wrap it in electric tape. Doing so will make it thicker and more durable and it won't crease or get thin over time. I did that on all my V1 dualshock controllers and I haven't had any issues since then.

That's the good stuff right there. Odd tinkering and filthy broken consoles and peripherals.

I remember talking apart my controller to clean it. It used to have separate plastic pieces between bumpers and triggers. It was a nightmare to place them back correctly. The newer versions had those integrated in the top of the pad cover. No wonder why they made this change 😅
