Restoration & Repair of Xbox 360 with Red Ring of Death
Restoring and repairing Xbox 360 with red ring of death and stuck disc drive. I got this Xbox as part of broken console lot from Ebay with some Playstations.
I started by checking the error code the console gives. Mine is 1023, which is almost always related to a cold solder in CPU or GPU. The disc drive is also not working. I can hear it trying to open but I doesn't.
To repair the red ring of death I used a heat gun. My heat gun is part of a soldering station but you can use a normal one also. Mine was set up to 400 degrees Celsius. The idea is to heat up the CPU and GPU until the solders underneath melt. The chips can be damaged by heat also so it's important to move the heat gun around. The board is pretty much ruined and not if you can't fix it, so you are not losing anything if you try this and fail. After the initial warm up I added flux which will help the reflow of the solder joints. During heating adding the flux you don't want to touch anything on the board because the solder should start melting and your parts can come off of the board and it can be very hard or impossible to put them back. After heating the CPU and GPU for a while I let the beard cool down before I touch it. Now the board is hopefully working. if not you can try again if you want.
I could hear that the disc drive was trying to open so I figured it was probably just filled with dust. I tested it and the motor which spins the disc didn't move up and down as it should. This prevented the drive from opening. I removed the covers from the drive and cleaned it. After cleaning the disc drive was working well.

This console managed to have 2 errors at the same time, 0102 (GPU/CPU cracked solder) was shown in the video, but you can tell 1023 (No DVD) was also happening due to the flashing power button. I'm glad he managed to fix both.

It doesn't matter. Those that do not take care of their toys, or otherwise misuse them, don't deserve to have them anyway. The real concern here is, all of that trash has to go somewhere, and that usually ends up being one countless landfills. This product was made to be broken, as are many. And the overwhelming vast majority of people do not possess the skills, tools or willpower required to maintain them. It is good practice, when buying something, to learn *_all_* about it and also purchase the tools that are necessary to maintain it. That is what I do.

Hey bud, any tip for an amateur? Got 0003 (short circuit at the board), after repairing E74 and 0102. Motherboard still have some flux over it (two hardware components are actually flooded by it). Cleaning it will solve anything?
2 жыл бұрын
@@StrangyENPP Hi, from what I remember, 0003 is a GPU error. You'd be best cleaning it all up and then seeing if the screws for the heatsink are on too tight (you can usually tell bc the motherboard will be flexing quite a bit). If that doesn't work, it may be that a GPU reball is required, which isn't the most beginner-friendly repair, but there are guides available.
@StrangyENPP

@, thank you, bud. I actually did many times the reball stuff before, but I also tried on this with no success really. I saw a video where they actually clean the board of every source of contamination. Will IPA (isopropyl alcohol) do the job of cleaning flux?
