Restoration & Repair of broken Xbox 360 and Fix The Red Ring of Death - ASMR

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In this video, I repair an Xbox 360 that suffers from the infamous Red Ring of Death (RROD). While this is a well-documented issue I was surprised at the lack of quality repair tutorials targeting DIYers. Most "reflow" videos are silly hacks (like wrapping your Xbox 360 in a towel) and even tutorials that suggest using a heat gun leaves a lot to be desired. For example, I didn't
I think there can be a version of an at-home RROD repair that uses simple tools that anyone can follow, resulting in a permanent fix.
To repair the red ring of death I used a heat gun according to Ifixit.com I set it up to 400 degrees Celsius. I'm starting by warming up the back of the motherboard for about one minute.
The chips can be damaged by heat also so it's important to move the heat gun around. three inches away from the board the constant motion at this distance isn't going to melt anything on this large of a surface area.
You should avoid the capacitors so that they don't get any direct heat.
After the initial warm-up, I applied flux which will help the reflow of the solder joints.
Unfortunately, I did not install the CPU heat sink correctly, I realized this mistake later after I finished the video so I corrected it after the video
This video shows you everything you need to know about taking apart your Xbox 360. If you need to replace the fan or the disk drive this video will show you how to get inside and disassemble your system. Since this system isn't the newest on the market anymore, it's cheaper to replace the parts yourself than it is to send them in for repairs.

it will fail again cause he just reballed it, too little thermal paste is worse than too much. The pressure of the mounting evens it out and just wastes the rest not making contact with the ihs and the heatsink, too little and u get gaps where thermal paste could be sat instead, the 360s problem was the heat from its components caused the board to flex and crack the pads/balls on the chip or board

@@garyhaas9575 Erm, no its actually nothing to do with the solder what causes the problem with these consoles, its to do with the clamps and the fact the main board is under large amounts of heat, cooling, heat, cooling cycles add the tension of the x-clamps, this causes micro fractures and separation in the solder balls present on the BGA, hence the RROD. Its just a shit design from M$. And that's NOT a reflow, all you did was heat the chip in a vain hope you reflowed it lol. Its similar to baking a GFX card

That's why Xbox 360 emulation is a must. plus I had a white one that got the red ring of death every now and then. All I did was beat the living crap out of it. I hit the top of it and it eventually went away. Rinse and repeat for 6 years. Eventually I tried to paint it, it went bad. Left it outside one day and someone stole it. That thing was a tank! Beat it up every other day.

I had a repaired Jtag unit back in the day and it lasted only a few months after being purchased..... The 360 got hot enough to suffer from chip creep. I'd imagine to properly restore a 360 long term you'd have to upgrade the cooling in some meaningful way over stock. Liquid metal would really be the easiest solution.

It's very strange that nobody mentions the thermal paste used in the video. Gd-900 is very liquidy paste which should not be used on bare die situations. Instead use PK-3, IC diamond Carat or a cheap solution would be Dow Corning TC-5688 which was specifically designed for bare die applications such as laptops and consoles.

No need to spread at all, it's only going to increase the risk of creating air bubbles. The heatsink will spread the thermal paste evenly when you attach it to the board.

I use to mod this kind of devices (Jtag / RGH) the way he did this maybe less then month if played daily. Honestly for this kind of repair if he wanted to do just a reflow using proper equipment like a BGA station would of been perfect all the heat gun does it throw hot air at the chip causing the board to warp because the whole board ain’t being heat up at same time. But again it’s just for a video so I’m guessing he might thrash it after or sell for parts.
