Restoring A $7,000 Mansion: Building New Kitchen Ceiling

I am working in my mansion, building a new kitchen ceiling. I am removing worn out walls, building temporary new walls, pulling old nails, installing giant new floor beams, and more. I am using a few basic tools, strong hands, great friends and neighbors, plus a good, positive, attitude.

you must not get out much then, this is how people work in general. In construction you can't do anything wrong, this has nothing to do with how people work today or in the past, people still work hard. You just seem to only want to see the FEW people who don't want to online and assume everyone now is like that. Go touch some grass omg.

No, not just semantics. LVLs frequently have a shiny coating which prevents glue from adhering, Microlam usually have a raw wood face, In neither case is glue a requirement or truly useful a proper schedule of nails to transmit shear from unit to unit one nail per 2 inches depth of beam repeated every 2 feet of length

So many have no clue what really involve to doing a total remodel and update but they think they know. There a point where keeping something and trying to patch it in will cost you 10 time the money then just to replace. Stairs didn't meet code. The subfloor was junk joist as undersize for the span. Thing to be thinking about, sound control, you will want to run slays perpendicular to your floor joists (for both leveling your ceiling and packing down to lowest point) and hang 5/8 fire rated drywall for sound control. Any plumbing should be heavy iron or wrap pvc in something like a tar based tape. Trust me you will not regret quiting the noise before it becomes an annoyance. Planing for it now is a great start.

Moving your shoulder towards the midline is controlled by the pectoralis major and minor. Moving your shoulder away from the midline is the muscles in your upper back like the latissimus dorsi. Pushing your arm forwards, like using an impact driver, is your bicep and deltoids. It makes sense the motions towards the midline cause pain. It will always be tighter in the morning because you didn’t move it for a few hours. Keep it moving, little to no resistance if possible. Try YTA exercises. (Hold your arms in a y position then back out in front, followed by a t then back in front and lastly an a.) you can do this with light resistance bands around a pole in front of you. Good luck on your recovery!

@annielincourt478 yep ! And we can also use it as "forget it" ! You're talking to someone who's not listening and when they ask what did you say? " laisse faire" 😂 such a versatile expression

I keep hearing you talk about bringing the mansion back and restoring it. You should make it livable for your family. Doesn't have to be over the top or perfectly restored to what it once was. You should have more bedrooms. The kids can share one until they get older. Minimum of 3 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms and 1 half bath.

If you are putting in jack columns might want to consider runs next to them. You can use those runs for plumbing and wiring, HVAC etc. Big house, you can afford some expensive space for the plumbers and electricians to get their work done.

The largest LVL my crew has installed was 4 ply 2 inch by 24 inch 28 ft long. Open beam ceiling. Mounted at center of roof stringers 14 ft from floor. I would send pictures by don’t want any evidence. Good job. We put the PL on the layer that was up to try not get as much on ourselves getting them in place. 4 inch structural screws. On each layer then long from first side. Last layer was 8 inch wrist testers

I'm very impressed with how the new bones of this building are going in. I did not anticipate cutting the old 2x8's and sliding the MicroLVLs between them. It gives the best of both worlds. More engineered strength combined with more open areas below. Great stuff. I can see it shaping up really nicely now.

You can build your temp walls using way less lumber if you do it in triangles. It’s also faster

You’ve got a big job ahead of you but your grandpa’s house is definitely worth saving. You have the right crew doing the job. When you’re done this house will be good for another 100 years or more with regular maintenance.
