Thank you so much!
The word John was looking for was “pergola” 🙂 And regarding where the boys sleep, most people seem to forget that it’s only very recently that families stopped sleeping in the same room, and in some places it’s still normal for families to sleep in one room, even with a big house around them. My kiddo sleeps in a loft bed in my bedroom, as my family lives in a pretty small house, and one day he will have his own room, but for now this works really well for us. I think bunk beds for the boys is a great idea. Once the house is built they’ll be old enough to start getting used to the idea of having their own sleeping space.
Obi seems like a sweetheart! So great you got a gentle, friendly dog that you don’t have to worry about around the boys! I absolutely love that light fixture!😍🇨🇦
John, using every part of his body to build a home for his family is mind boggling!!😊 I absolutely love 💕 and live for Wednesdays and Sundays with the Newby family…YOU FOLKS ROCK‼️Love, light & Sunday Blessings 🙏🏽💕✨

John when you install the plywood in the roof needs to go the long side of the plywood sheet cross ways to the wood. That makes the roof stronger

I agree with Albert John, always opposite direction to roof rafters. I know this is only a temporary extension. Might as well have it built well & safe. Will be much stronger to bear your weight when standing on it putting your felt or tiles on it. Plus more rigid against high winds particularly if plan on using it for two years while building.

Albert...... Hi...pls tel me if the same would apply if one uses plywood as a ceiling. I realise in one instance the wood I'd resting on and the other the wood is in a sense hanging from..... Obstacle no. 1 if I go ahead...... We rather like the appearance and look of the natural wood we know masonite is not suitable as that is what we would be replacing here?

I’m so invested in your progress! It reminds me of when my husband and I built our house in the Amazon 35 years ago, while raising 6 children. Such hard work but such wonderful payoff in great family memories. We spent 4 years with the 8 of us all in one room sleeping in hammocks. The adult children share such wonderful memories from that family time.😊

I think the bunk bed idea for the boys will be a lot of fun for them
All your hard work is paying off. It's going to be beautiful and functional
For the wall with the toilet sticking out, consider making an accessible bit for if there is ever an issue with the toilet. Also for the lamp in the hallway why not use wire gutters? Stick them to the wall and bob’s your uncle. No need to pull wire through the attics, a cheaper option and less time consuming. 😊 thanks for the episode and have a lovely Sunday 😊

Great progress!. It seems like a sensible plan to transition the toddlers to their own bunk beds in a shared space while you build a new house.
John, I think the word you want is "pergola". Rather than trying to go through the cement beams in the stairway ceiling, could you run the wiring up the wall and across the ceiling and cover it in a conduit cover in white? It would save you a huge amount of time and effort. You're doing a great job! If anything, I would wish a second set of hands for you. However, if wishes were horses, beggars would ride. Keep up the good work! Blessed Be!

Lightwell suggestion: Re wire the light fitting, not the house. Perhaps a coloured pretty cotton-covered cable. (You can buy black and white houndstooth 240V cables now, or maybe a bright red?) Replace the wall fitting to something that matches the light shade. Allow the exposed cable to drape up the wall; decorative hook straight above the wall sconce position; second decorative cup hook where you want the light to hang (this needs to be robust enough to carry weight); drape softly the cable from the wall to that, then hang the chain supporting the lamp. For the cost of the decorative cable, two hooks and replacing the wall sconce, there are now no major wall or ceiling penetrations required. Result is decoratively in keeping with both the building and the style of the shade .

In America we build almost everything on 16 inch centers with studs, and rafters, and along with that sheeting of plywood, sheetrock, ect around 4ft x 8 ft and that lines up with the gap and reason for using 16in centers.
For a couple whom have never done anything like this conversion I can only say you have surpassed anything a pro could have done.
I love spending time with you folks too. Tara and John may all your dreams come true
Thank you , Tara, understood. I thought that could be the reason. Everything is gonna be great.
It's daft I know but somehow, despite watching the derelict house get knocked down, when I see thin air through the door of your porch it takes me by surprise for a nano-second every time! 😲😧🤣 The Portuguese really do seem to like their concrete in buildings, don't they! Why always so many concrete beams rather than wood? Is it a fear of fire thing, perhaps; or is there another reason? That lamp is just going to be gorgeous all lit up and glinting off the walls 😍 - we've got a 3-way switch for our hall light too and it really is so helpful isn't it? *hugs * to you all! x
For the light in the stairwell. If you channel up to the ceiling then use a loop of chain that matches the vertical lamp chain that would look pretty cool, you can intertwine the electrical cable in the chain?
So much work! I hope John’s shoulder holds up? It’s looking pretty cool! Can’t wait to see your kitchen, sounds like you’ve got new ideas. 🏖️🤙🏼🏄🏽♀️

I’ve been thinking about that bag of peas for your shoulder/neck. It’s gotta be getting a bit wormy by now! Sort of, yes? So, I use a flat ice mat that can be refrozen as it is filled with a chemical that freezes happily. The mat, about a 12 in x 15 inch rectangle, shapes nicely to your anatomy! Presto! Relief!
So glad you will be keeping and using John's original kitchen somewhere else Tara, that is some kitchen and even better than what you can buy and the colour is gorgeous. When it comes to kitchen and bathroom fittings…..especially taps…..I think you need to spend as much as you can on quality. I had someone say one day…”think about how many times you turn on your taps per day”. After 3 renovations in Australia……we’ve learnt that golden rule.

Hi Newbys! I’m an avid watcher. I’m interested but I also find your videos incredibly relaxing which I really need. I guess we all do. Just a random thought, so ignore of course, but your Moroccan light shade is quite frankly LUSH! And I totally see the vision. To add to that vision, would you consider painting the walls (once rendering and windows are complete, a shade of warm yellow? Like a muted Moroccan yellow??? My thinking is because as the space is small and in winter you will need to get the warm vibes, with the lovely light castings from light shade against the warmth of a warm yellow, it will make it a coat and give that reading nook vibe. Also when you transition small kids to bed, taking them through a chilled out warm space as a psychological effect. Anyways, loving your channel! ✌🏼❤️

John, when my husband and I built our cabin, We had to put battens in between each one of the rafters. So I'm wondering are you not doing it because this is a temporary structure? I'm blown away watching you do this. It took both of us to build the frame and my brother in law for some of it. Your amazing!!
@TheNewbys
21 күн бұрын
Hi Kati, good question. I think with the boards holding the line, L brackets and the supports at either end we won’t need battens between the rafters. The woods pretty dry too, so I don’t worry too much about its bending or warping, which is what the battens (I presume) would be protecting against. I remember watching a house build in Finland and they didn’t include battens because it would block airflow through the roof. Interesting question. All of these buildings questions are really proving helpful and interesting. Like the kitchen, we build once and can’t wait to have another go and do it better! So long as it doesn’t fall down, which we are very confident it won’t, then all is well for this temporary structure! Thanks Kati!
