Restoration of an Old Hunting Knife! Snake Skin Handle??
In this video I restore an old hunting knife. This knife is very unique because it is large but still folds up like a pocket knife.
I start with disassembly and then use electrolysis to remove most of the rust. After this I bring the part to the blast cabinet for some sandblasting. Once the blade was free of rust I etched the blade in ferric chloride to darken the color. The blade was then tumbled in some media and stones to produce a beautiful stone washed finish.
For the scales I chose to use some cobra snake skin that a subscriber sent me. This was difficult and took a few tries, but eventually I was able to make it work. To stick with the snake theme I forged a cobra shaped guard.
Finally I created a leather sheath to hold the knife.
With every project I strive to add a creative touch. I hope you guys enjoyed the video, if you do leave a like and a comment. Subscribe if you would like to see more awesome content ;).
Much Love,

I really enjoy a good thunderstorm. It may sound strange, but there's just something so COZY about rain on the roof and the smell of the fresh air afterwards.
Great job as always. FYI my grandfather showed me how to see how sharp your knife is. You slant your thumb at an angle and put the knife blade on the nail. If the knife slips, it's dull, but if your knife sticks it's sharp. I'm an old man now but I never forgot.
The snake skin “scales”were a dope idea! They just set and look AMAZING!
i, honored to have this same knife in my collection
Great job! It was great seeing one of the Pakistani knives from my childhood turned into a beautiful artistic piece of Pakistani steel.
Beautiful work, I have a smaller version, they're called D'Estaing knives. It's an old French trapper design. Folded it's for basic camp tasks, unfolded it's for skinning hogs and cleaning hides to make leather. Great video, those snakeskin handles are fine!!!

Конечно с тобой согласен чтобы хромировано было красиво ну и так очень здорово получилось
My brother gave me a knife almost identical to this one. My blade has several rectangular slots cut through the blade near the top edge and has the words “Stainless” and “Pakistan” and the number “6” on one side near the hinge. There isn’t anything on the other side. It came with a thin leather sheath and has a deer stamped on it. You did a great job on your knife. Darlington. South Carolina
I actually have one of these in my basement. It’s in significantly better condition, and just needs a few parts.

Brings back memory of being in the Lab in my school days..
🤗🤗🤗➕➕➕💯💯💯✊✊✊✊✊✊✊👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏.
Love a good thunderstorm. As long as I don’t have to go out & I’m not afraid my home will get damaged.

I mean yeah, the knife was probably in pretty decent condition before he artifically rusted it and burned the wood handle so he could restore it for this video.

First love a good thunderstorm, lighting and rain on a tin roof. Second, that was one lovely snakeskin you were gifted. I still have one of snake-skins I tanned, the bastard that was inside our quarters and trying to get into our budgie's cage. The cook showed my how he did sea-snake skins. Nice job on the knife too, lol. The scales on scales were perfect.
The camera work actually took my breath away! Good job.

I really appreciate the workmanship, and now that i read the comments and know what this is for, i think i made a mistake. Im fairly certain i dumped a box of old knives my father had collected that included one of these, identical except the rust and inoperability at a scrap yard 2 years ago in Florida. I wonder if maybe that very same one ended up in your hands and got restored
nice handle and scabbard. nice restoration

storms would be great if they didnt always make my power go out, to me that is all they signify; no power, internet or ac and then the long frustrating wait for it to come back on.
Great job. I think you did better then the original maker of this knife. Congratulations 🎉
I have this exact knife at home!

Holy crap. I used to have this knife when I was like 14.. Found it at a flea market.. It was rusted and broke.. The lock didn't work. No open. Nothing.. I ended up getting it made into a full tang knife.. I wondered how it worked and what it would of looked like functional. Awesome video =)

BEAUTIFUL WORK, EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT A FAN OF THE STONEWASH LOOK OF THE BLADE!!!
I often attribute my love for knives to my grandfather, "Pa". As a kid I spent hours rummaging through his collection of weird blades and old tools, and I remember him having one of these oddities. It came in a heavy, wax hardened pocket sheath with a belt loop and I can remember wondering why on earth someone would make a folding knife with half the blade left exposed. Even as a kid, I thought this was a ridiculous design, but that was probably half the reason he picked it up I imagine. Pa always had a soft spot for gimmicky items and he probably found his at a gun show or the old flea market we visited when I was little.

It's a traditional French trappers knife. The design is called D'Estaing. When closed, the small portion of exposed blade is meant for camp use, cutting up food items and small tasks, but when a larger knife is needed, just throw the latch and unfold the full blade. I bought one a few years ago. 👍🏻

@beltfed4624 Really? I'll have to do some digging on that, then. Do you know when they were in production? The only French styles I'm familiar with are the knives they traded to Native Americans here, usually for furs and other goods. They were all of simple, full tang and pinned construction. Usually, they didn't even come with a sheath.
@beltfed4624

@@brianlawson3757 I corrected the spelling, it's D'Estaing. They are still produced, mine is a modern version from eBay. They're not real cheap, but for $30 to $50 you should be able to get a nice one. They're not really strong knives, mostly just for hunting/field dressing/camp not survival. They're not too popular, but still around. My family came from swampers, French-Creole, my uncle had the first one I ever saw.

@beltfed4624 I had no idea they were still in production and had assumed they were more of a novelty item. The one my Pa had was pretty much blunted and would have taken an hour on a grinder to get an edge on it. Thanks for the info, though. I want to learn more about who made this wacky design and who actually used it.😁

Обкладки ручек из эпоксидки красивые. Но размочалит их от эксплуатации. Для декоративного ножа сойдет.
