Restoration of highlander DAGGER - The SHARPNESS of past

Hi! Today, the restoration of the old Caucasian dagger of the second half of the 19th century. The blade is in good condition, the scabbard is not. The handle is made of horn, cracked. The steel is good, despite the fact that more than a century and a half has passed, the sharpness has been preserved. Well, I'm starting to recover.
The first thing I did was to disassemble the scabbard in detail, I saved everything. I like old pieces of leather, wood, etc. Next, I put the steel suspension in a jar with a rust remover.
After cleaning, I put the suspension in a jar with warm water and soda to neutralize the acid and adjusted it again to the size of my new scabbard. By heating and tightening with round pliers.
The hilt of the dagger. First of all, I cleaned it of a thick layer of petrified dirt. Next, I degreased everything and with the help of epoxy resin and a needle, carefully smeared a crack in the handle.
A day later, I removed the clamp from the handle and carefully removed the glue residue, scratches by hand and left the horn handle in an oil cloth for a couple of days. Then he rubbed it again with linseed oil and the handle was transformed. At the same time, it retained its old appearance.
The sheath of the Caucasian dagger. As always, I used wood and natural leather of two types, thin for the front side and thicker for the back side. I glued everything together and added a special pocket for a dagger knife.
I had a small dagger and decided to add it to the big one. (It is rare, but you can still find daggers with their knives, for example, you can look at photos of old daggers on my Instagram page).
I made the handle of a small dagger out of cow and deer antlers. Glued and riveted with steel pins.
In the end, I gave the effect of antiquity to the scabbard and made the missing accessories for the dagger scabbard out of nickel silver. I minted the surface (for the first time).

Мне тоже сегодня прислали кавказский кинжал. Это был сувенирный кинжал с металлическими мельхиоровыми ножнами и рукояткой. Изначально в нём был клинок из ржавой железяки, но мастер вместо него выковал ромбовидный в сечении клинок из дамасской стали. Лезвия специально не заточены. Шикарный получился кинжал! Вот, похвастался! Живите теперь с этим! 😊😊😊😊😊

Finally, you venture beyond plain black leather! (Okay, I admit I haven’t watched *all* of your past videos, so you may have used other colors before this.) Good decision on giving the dagger a companion knife. They go well together.

Hi! Thanks for the feedback. You understand, black leather is used because most of all daggers had black leather, as well as the scabbards of sabers and broadswords. And I try to do it as close as possible to the originals that my ancestors did.

I like the fact you retained the old cracked handle. I have seen other restorers replacing the old ones with new wood which somehow doesn't feel good at all, even though they may look nice.

I love your work! I would like to note that to truly be a decent restoration, or a conservation, anything you do to add the piece should be reversible, so i would personally not have used two component epoxy for the crack in the handle, horn glue might have been a better choice. I love your channel, watching you work is facinating to me 🥳

Ох, запашок стоит, наверное, когда пилишь рог. Меня, после того, как я сделал для ножа рукоятку из рога, отказывались домой пускать=))))
Suggestion, If you are using the powder medium with the super glue, pack the work with the powder first, then add the glue on top, faster and easier, and does the same job.

Хорошо получилось. Да. Накладки рукояти из рога ? Так можно было не просто эпоксидкой залить а смешать эпоксидку с роговой пылью (напилить напильником) и тогда уже и клеить, и сверху намазать , чтобы трещин и мест склейки не видно было. Потом, когда застынет, всё вывести в плоскость. Ну, так думаю, типа... )))
