I love how empathetic this comment section is! There is a large cat colony in my parents' small town and one woman takes care of most of them. To much of the town, she is just a "crazy cat lady" but to us, she is an exceptionally kind woman who, despite her own mental/physical health struggles, does her absolute best to help these kitties. She works with the local shelter to have them TNR'd and knows all of the local "cat politics" (the cat family trees, what cat is the Boss of the street this week, which neighbors feed or unofficially "own" what cat, what kitties cause drama and which cats con cat food out of every single cat-loving person in town). She has her struggles, but she truly loves those cats and is an integral part of their survival. Thank you for your kindness and respect to those who take care of feral cats, even if they don't do it "perfectly".

Oh, my heart at 5:27 seeing all those cans and bags of pet food. It looks to me like whoever lives here is clearly trying their best to care for these cats. I'm so glad they've allowed you and Miss Dixie's to help them manage their kitty neighbors.

So glad you pointed out that folks should wait for a long time to see if Mom is around. Too often kittens are taken away from their Mom’s by well meaning folks and then they become a burden to the already burgeoning rescue community.

Situations like this one, chances are good the person(s) living in this environment has mental health issues, including but not necessarily limited to: depression, addictions, and a whole host of others. Best to help gently and respect their limits, whatever they might be. No matter what, these people deserve the respect that anyone else enjoys, and a healthy dose of kindness and understanding go a long way. They are doing their best to help the cats/kittens and are probably more than a bit overwhelmed.

Heads up for folks trying to catch a momma with tiny babies: one way to tell if she is coming back or is not coming back to the babies is to spread flour on the ground around the nest. If there are paw prints in the flour, she's come back. If it's been 12+ hours and there are not paw prints, she has not come back. Remember: it's best to catch momma with babies!

I'm watching this sitting next to 2 kittens I recently rescued. A co-worker's family member found with them behind their house and momma was unfortunately not alive. We're still trying to catch the other 2 babies.

These folks are probably poor and have some issues they're working out. My folks place looks alot like that out front too, we're working on getting it cleaned up. Still, its good to see they are taking care of the kitts! Everyone has a story, I don't want to see any disparaging of their character just because of the messy yard.

We just got a couple ~4week old foster kittens that someone had called animal control on and they wound up in the pound, so we did an emergency rescue. I suspect they had a mother and I'd have preferred they could have stayed with her awhile longer. One of them unfortunately didn't make. The time without food and warmth was just a bit too much. But the other one is doing fine. So as the video says intervening and rescuing little kittens isn't always the kindest route. If it had been possible for them to stay with the mother even a couple more weeks they both likely would have made it. But maybe that wasn't possible, I don't know the details.

I felt so bad calling around for a kitten litter I found last year. It was seven kittens and only a couple had mostly opened eyes. I've done kitten feeding before so I know how intensive it is and these kittens were clearly only 5-10 days old. But the city worker who found the first one didn't even realize there was a nest as the kitten was that far away. Then we found a second one over 10ft from the nest through underbrush and leaf piles. Both the singlets were so cold I thought one of them was already dead. I waited around for mom for a few hours while warming up the two single kittens, but she was a no show on a busy road near a dog park and at the three hour mark (five hours after the initial kitten was found) I called it. None of the kittens were meowing for food or mom and the two we found first didn't look chonky enough. I ended up taking them home and syringe feeding them while we looked for a rescue/shelter that could take them. Thankfully all of them warmed up well, began moving around and meowing, and took two meals while I had them. Then I handed them off to a foster. Such a sad situation.

I don't wanna see anyone judging the people and the state of their property, yo 😠 The rich pretty areas rarely need help. It's usually the poor and marginal areas. A lot of people get into bad situations and need help, and shaming them for reaching out doesn't do anyone any good, especially not the animals who didn't choose any of this. thank you for being scolded by my ted talk

Wondering how much time it is b/w trapping, neutering, & returning? Was thinking of the shed momma cat & if she was TNR’d, how long she & kittens were separated. Would the kittens try to find momma or just know to stay put? Hope you don’t mind me asking 🙂

I don't know how they do it here but at the rescue I volunteer with, it's usually at least a couple days. A lot depends on the vet's schedule, so if someone gets brought in on Wednesday they can be fixed the same day, but if they come in on Friday they'll have to wait til the next week. They also need some recovery time post-surgery. The one neighborhood cat I TNR'd took three or four days between trapping him, getting him to the shelter for surgery, and getting him home to be released. I know some shelters work with multiple vets, or have other arrangements so it's possible they weren't apart for very long at all! Not sure about the age of the kittens, they looked like their eyes were still shut so I'd say less than two weeks, in which case they can't get far on their own. Once they're four or five weeks old they can really move but before then they mostly just wiggle around! 😂

Adult feral cats are extremely difficult to keep in an adoptive home, thats assuming you can even find enough people to take them. Once an animal has been conditioned to living wild that long, wherever they are just becomes their territory, and you can't take the wild out of the cat. What this group is doing is simply ensuring that these ferals cant keep reproducing, in an effort to limit the feral cat epidemic and number of outdoor kitten casualties. Hope this helps with understanding!
