Replacing a Vent Blower Assembly | Rheem Water Heater | Man About Home

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My water heater vent blower motor was sounding like it was on the way out. So I replaced it preemptively, on my own schedule, rather than letting it dictate my schedule.

I had the same problem w/ my AO Smith unit. I thought I could just replace the bearing(s), but I was wrong - the impeller wouldn't come off the shaft. I ended up having to buy the whole blower assembly @ $300-ish. What a waste of $.

Yes, they're very expensive. When this tank eventually fails and needs to be replaced, I'm planning to sell the good parts on Ebay or elsewhere... try to recover some of the cost. Thank you for watching and commenting.

I had a very similar issue with a Bradford White unit. The first thing I tried was removing the fan assembly from the heater and used a small wire brush to clean the cups on the squire cage. There was quite a bit of scale and dirt buildup in the cups, I think causing an imbalance problem. I vacuumed the unit out, reinstalled and the noise went away. I purchased a new fan as well, but the old one has been quiet for a few weeks now .

That's interesting. I haven't disassembled my old unit yet. Maybe I'll find something similar? We'll see. Thanks for watching and commenting.

No hot water this morning. Went downstairs and the blower has water in it somehow and won't stay on without throwing a code. The code says pressure switch failed open but I think it's more than that seeing water inside of it. This video was really helpful.

@@manabouthome I think one of the nipple fittings where the water comes in is leaking a bit Causing the water on top of the tank. There is some rusting and calcium/lime buildup on one end. I used my mouth to blow through the silicone tube into the pressure switch moving some water, and now it's working fine. I might need to replace the blower soon now that it has been wet. I will get my HVAC cousin in law to check it out and help with repairs when I get the parts in.

Nice video. Any sealant between the new unit and the water heater? gasket?

Thank you. No. The foam gasket that comes pre-attached to the bottom of the blower unit is pretty sticky. It appears to be fine without additional sealant. The best indicator I have is the owners manual for the water heater. There are instructions about how to install the vent blower unit on a new water heater. There's no sealant recommended in the instructions. Thanks for watching!

What is the price of a new water heater compared to a new blower assembly and a new gas valve?

You can check various components on Supplyhouse.com, to get a sense of the costs. Nothing is cheap! One of these 40 gallon tanks is $1200 at Home Depot. I took a chance on replacing my gas valve, and I ended up having another problem, with the vent blower. When, not if, the tank fails, I'll have to sell the components off to recover some of the cost. I would have gladly purchased a used blower vent assembly if I could have found one. Thanks for watching and commenting!

They're not cheap! There's a link in the description. But I got mine on Ebay, new, with a one year warranty. SupplyHouse.com is often a good plumbing source as well. Thanks for watching!
