Thank you Bryan, you have inspired me to give it a shot! Couple notes: 1. there IS a part 2 to this/your great video 2. Mine was loud for a couple years but since it was so far away from us we just lived with it. It finally seized up. Our limited warranty was EIGHT years, we are at 6.5 years, and they are FedExing us a new assembly under warranty. Paid 30.00 to expedite, hopefully arrives before our visitors!

Glad you were able to get a replacement, and hopefully the repair goes/went well. It's really easy for anyone who has turned a wrench or screwdriver, as you can see from the vid. Lots of money saved for less than an hour's worth of work!

Just replaced mine. The old unit had a backdraft sensor issue and it sounded kinda rattly. Here's hoping I fixed it for 1/3 what the plumber quoted me to do the same thing.

Can one just buy a blower and convert an old direct vent gas water heater? Do they sell conversion kits?

How come the hot exhaust gas doesn't melt the PVC pipe used for venting? I have only seen metal ones.

Not sure but since the actual burner is at the very bottom of the water heater, by the time the exhaust gets up to the vent it may not be hot enough to melt the PVC or plastic pieces of the blower unit.

Thanks for the video. Is there any need to shut gas or water off? Cheers

No need to shut either the gas or water off. I just shut off the water heater itself to keep it from trying to kick on.
