    The mixing of cold and hot by another valve is why you need to install a shut off on the inlet and the outlet side of the water heater. For an extra $20, add the second shut off.

    Chuck love the video's of you and CB2. I see some of these power vent units out here in San Diego but usually only on 3 story tall buildings. Out here we also have to put 2 earthquake straps on every water heater. I was a little surprised you did the pipe fitting first first and then the vent last. I'm not a plumber but when I work on projects I always try to do the harder stuff first. But it's probably not any more difficult for you in either order of operation, or maybe you like having room to get at those crimps from any direction. Just sayin' thinking out loud if it were ME doing this I would deal with the vent first. But it's a very nice install and I appreciated watching you cut that 3/4 inch or whatever that was off the cold water pipe before BC2 crimped it...perfectionist. A lot of guys woulda just not bothered with that last cut

    yeah, likely when they shut the door with dryer on it's game over, it could starve the power vented one enough to drop and error. they'll probably be screaming about the freezing cold entering through the old B vent, which hopefully doesn't tie into a larger B vent picking up a boiler or furnace else it will pull all that in backwards too! *** i see the HVAC vent on ceiling is shut also and look at the big dirty buildup ring around it. makes me wonder if there's also a cold air return in there and the hvac system further causing negative pressure.

    chuck, only on combustion type water heaters with B-vent/atmospheric vent do you have to have the 18" of copper minimum, an electric heater you can pex 100%, that power vent you could as well since no combustion/heat can melt or ruin the integrity

    That is not at all true. And the code applies to the water lines and has nothing to do with the venting. UPC requires 18”. Just use a flex line. They are 24”, you can loop it to fit just like a toilet or faucet supply, and it makes future servicing realistic. If you hard pipe it you have to re pipe it in the future.

  • @Lyricyst28

    @Lyricyst28

    4 жыл бұрын

    I.bleed.green.20 , plumbers don’t use flexible connections, if you use the shark bite flexible connections you’ll have black particulate in your water supply as the rubber internals deteriorate and send it into the system, flex lines are a no go and I take them out daily, you don’t need copper on an electrical unit, the clearances are put in place due to the heat of the venting, no copper required unless it’s combustible and on a gas fire heater etc

  • @i.bleed.green.2081

    @i.bleed.green.2081

    4 жыл бұрын

    James Harrison lol at plumbers not using flexible connections. Unless you’re bending rigid supply lines of hard piping in your toilet and all other fixtures, they are all connected with flex lines. Plumbers do not use shark bites. End of story. Don’t know why you would even bring that into this conversation. Flex lines used at water heaters are made of stainless steel and are allowable by code. It has nothing to do with venting lmao. The 18” applies to both electric and gas, all varieties of venting as well. Look it up, chapter 5 of the UPC.

Pex especially "B" pex verses "A" pex, Pex cannot tolerate heat over long periods of time. Heat rating is stamped on the pipe. Pex also has a presure rating. Not a fan of the no pen all the way to the water heater. Especially when the manufacturers of the pet rate the pet for such things. Same thing here in maine. No pex with in 18”

    Yeah, I agree. uponor is 25/50. Uponor even has residential fire suppression systems that use their pex. I don’t know if it’s code for that. Though that’s way overkill for a water heater. It would also be super handy for t&p lines. When I worked in an area without an inspector we’d run a pex line straight down into the pan for the t&p.

    @@joshcowart2446 ideally, the end of a t&p pipe should be hard to cap off. like iron pipe cut off, a coupling on copper (push on wont fit), or the polypropylene tube stores sell, which the push-on junk doesn't grab or seal on due to the thin wall thickness ;) if not you'll find them capped all too often!

    throttle bottle that makes sense but I don’t always worry about plumbing to prevent stupidity. It’s impossible. Even with an iron pipe cutoff they could use a dresser coupling or some sort of fernco type thing. They could block it enough so that pressure would build

    Is it possible to convert the atmospheric venting to use a power vent blower setup? If the water heater is still in good shape?

    @@ChuckBarron Thanks for the reply! Alrighty, just feel bad swapping out a gas water heater that works perfect...Its atmospheric venting and i want to eliminate the chimney so i can open up my kitchen. In doing so i need to exhaust the heater out the wall... Think i could recoupe a few bucks and sell the used water heater?
