How To Replace a Water Heater (Power Vented Natural Gas Heater)

As shown in my last video I was surprised with a bulging water heater tank and now it's time to replace it. The process is pretty straight forward and I lay out every step without being to draconian.

should've taken and added a 1/4 turn shutoff shark-bite onto the cold side since the old valve was no longer working 100% - gate valves are a PIA to work with when they get old. otherwise great job on the DIY install!!

ABS pipe is porous and prone to cracks due to the exhaust fumes. In Canada it lo longer meets build codes and need to be replaced by a thick wall PVC pipe. Otherwise, you are at risk of releasing deadly fumes into your house. Just my 2 cents

Great way to save $4k. Many plumbing companies are absolutely thieves. I was just quoted $5200 to replace a power vent water heater that is one sale at Lowe’s for $1200. Going to do it myself.

Good job. In areas prone to earthquakes (Washington State for ex.) you are now required to place 2 straps (plumbers tape) to hold the tank in place...one high and one low. Nicely done.

Fantastic work, dude! Pretty interesting how it's done there! 😃 Here we use electric showers... But it never gets that cold anyway. About not feeling any smell, check with a doctor. 🧐 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

When you were feeling the tank you should have opened the pressure release valve so that you don't have any air inside your tank unless of course you had some faucets open while you were filling it. If you have too much air in your tank you'll be heating that air up which could cause the tank to explode.

I had a similar problem when I had my last water heater die. The new heaters have a little more insulation making them wider. Unfortunately, to fit in one of the newer ones, I would either have to have had my furnace temporarily removed and then reinstalled or demolish an adjacent bathroom wall and shower stall. After several hours of searching, the installers were able to find one of the old style skinny ones.

What would you recommend if you were getting tons condensation/water drooling down from the outtake pvc pipe into the blower mech? My Power Vent Rheem water heater is getting filled with water from the outside connection. When I try and start my water heater, I can hear the water dripping down and then I can get it to work after Wet-vac'ing the water out of the system. Last time I was trying to get it working, I saw water seeping out of the pipe down towards the blower assembly. The idiots put the venting pipe straight up and angled vertically outside the house with a downward angled junction and I feel it is sagging inside after all this time, leading to condensation drippage from the natural gas heat source making tons of vapor. Is that is a good start on the issue? I know I need to angle the outside connection down after some research and looking at the owners manual, but is there any other way of preventing this from being a 3 day a week thing? Do I need to fix the pvc routing outside and make sure the run is level? I haven't had this problem before and I have been living in a house built in 2014 for 9 years with no issues other than the wind shutting it the hot water heater off since I live i a valley. I have a family member that is a plumber. Do I need him?

hot water tank pan drain - why didn't you use one to keep the floor dry? You could have run your pipe from the pan to the clean-out pipe. Just a thought in the future.

I had a hot water heater fail catastrophically in the middle of the night somewhat recently. It didn't have a drain pan, but luckily there was a floor drain just inches away! Unfortunately, the floor also slopes away from that drain... New one is in a drain pan.

Nope. No floor drain in that room. And all the house water lines are in there so when something breaks its all screwed. I had a pin hole leak on one of the original solder joints spray everywhere one day. That was fun.

@@DIYBuilds a friend put a water detection sensor that warned him on an app. It was a pin hole on the pipe that was spraying right on the sensor. If it was spraying anywhere else it wouldn't have warned him. You could put one on a pan to let you know if the tank starts leaking.

@@DIYBuilds Poland , Europe. but if I have but honest it was mostly because people were stealing gas (knee pipe on gas meter) in apartment block's and a few blow out in past. So now you need inspector for any change and also you have to let him in once every year so he can see pipes and check for leaks. So now you have context why I'm a little jealous of your building freedom in CA.
