the secret to longer term storage of a generator = shut the gas off and let it run dry and put stabilizer in the gas. starts like a charm even after a year of sitting.

Good advice. Anne always would have the carbs on her boats outboard motors fogged for winter storage, never a problem. Even after they sat for over 2 years.

I took a "Small Motors" class in high school (1972?) where we disassembled a gas motor and got to see all the parts you talked about. Float bowls, gaskets, venturis, jets, etc - This just brought me back to those times... - Thanks Ray. Nice to see you go back to "old school" and not just toss it out.

Nice video, I own the same machine, just as old, don't forget to clean or remove the spark arrestor. There's two pieces one wafer outside one cone inside the pipe.

As a DIY kinda guy & one with a small Champion gen; i really appreciate your review & repair video's. It only gets used a few hours a year when boondocking and the sun is hiding. Like a lot of others have stated I run my fuel bowl empty after every use. I use fuel stabilizer in the gas tank when I know I won't use a full tank. I drain it if its going to sit more than 30 days. I've had a fair number of RV's & boat's over the years and just old school preventative maintenance. Thanks for the help.

Thanks Ray, I have bought a set of carb jet orifice brushes some time ago. They are much like oxygen acetylene tourtch brushes but smaller. When I was in high school back in the 70's I had a teacher once tell me, if a small engine won't run. Use a glass jar and a squeeze ball ( red with black stem) and go to the bottom of the fuel tank and draw up some gas. Now put it in the glass jar and look for water in the fuel. I think you did a great job, you just like to be like Mcgiver.👍👍

I had the same surging issues with my same age 2000 watt champion. When I put it back together I added an inline lawnmower fuel filter for good measure. I was amazed how much crap accumulated and was caked on the bottom of the fuel tank that I cleaned out. Runs like a champ again!

Nice job Ray. It’s always a pain to have to do the disassembly more than once but the result was worth it. We have the champion 3100 watt with remote start. I think they stopped selling that one and replaced it with the 3400 watt option. Anyway, it hasn’t let us down yet and it’s almost 5 years old.

Nice job ray I have a robin subaru 1700l I’ve had it over 10 years I run fuel stabilizer in it we use it every year camping just to help charge my batteries when the solar not doing great it’s really never let me down 👍

I haven't had this problem since I started turning the gas off and letting it run the carb dry before storage.

Hey Ray, I know someone suggested running the generator tank dry and dumping stabil into the tank. If you want to, and you can do it up in Canada, and you have the same problem up in Canada as we do down here in the us with some of our fuel grades (gasoline, not diesel) except for maybe premium in some locations, you want premium non ethanol gas. On top of which, although you could run the generator for a few minutes to get the stuff through, but, you want to get the fuel level down, put the stabil in and then top the fuel tank off. My grandfather's friend has seen plenty of instances of where Ethanol in fuel has really messed with different parts such as maybe rubber seals. Non ethanol premium fuel is of course more of if your going maybe days or weeks between usage, such as like with the generator, or maybe chainsaws, or other small engine stuff.

I guess I've been watching you for a long time, I think I remember you doing a demo on this generator in a combo with another one just like it running your AC in the desert? Is this the same BIL that has an old Ford Pickup that cranked on the starter for days?

We've got a 3000 watt Champion, but I'd like to just get a 1200 to 1800 watt, smaller generator for use of just charging the batteries. I'm maxed out with about 280 watts of solar input from my 400 watt panels, to a self-inflicted damaged BMS on the 200 WH LiFePO4 battery, so need to be able to charge off-grid camping. I've thought about a 2k generator, but am looking for something like you currently use.

Would running a can of sea foam in have done the same thing? I’m not as handy as you Ray.

I'm not too sure. I imagine there is no substitute for physically taking apart and cleaning but guess it depends on how badly its clogged up and the type of debris.

how many hours do you say you have on that genarator ?

Not a whole lot since I had two of them that I could parallel together but rarely needed to so alternated using the two and only dry camped 3-4 months of the year. So around 200 hours I'd guess.

@@LoveYourRV it works like a charm and removes rust and ethanol slime if metal take - if plastic removes ethanol slime - nothing works like the 5 minute oven cleaner - then you can add the non toxic brake cleaner or 70% alcohol and shake it around to dry out the tank after you spray it out and used Dawn dish washing detergent in a big bucket - I'll be excited to see you like this after you tried it out and make a video on it because no one has yet - this ethanol added gas is very nasty fuel and it goes bad fast gunning up your fuel system

Cool. :) I've personally never had a problem with the generators I use. I just make sure to run them an hour or so every month or two when I'm not actively using them. They have always run great. This one was loaned to my brother in law and basically sat for a number of years as he never had any power outages. One thing I do do is only ever use the more expensive high octane premium gas in my generators. Cheers, Ray

@@LoveYourRV that's good as long as you run them and never let them sit - I've made the mistake of letting my pressure washer sit too long and had to take everything apart and clean it

@@LoveYourRV let me give you another tip that I found off YT - silicon your drains to your sink - I use the GE that flexs up to a quarter inch - that plumber putty is bs and you'll get a leak - even put a small bead around your faucets - when the time comes to replace the drain it doesn't matter if you damge it getting out to put a new one in

Nice info, good repair! I second and third the Stabilizer and run the carb dry. Is that a drain on the Crab bowl? kzread.info/dash/bejne/mHqit6WqaKuppLg.html If so you can drain the Carb after shutting down. I think this type of gen just shuts off the gas and stops the gen all at one time, making it not possible to run dry.

Thanks. :) Yes, it has a drain tube on the bowl that gets fed out a small opening on the bottom of the generator case. The small screw on the bowl opens and closes the drain.

You do not unscrew the plastic fuel shutoff. There is a screw approx 3" deep in the center of the plastic shutoff that needs to be removed. Don't break the plastic by doing what he says on this piece.

Sorry, when I said unscrew it I figured it would be self evident to unscrew the screw. But I guess not.
