Champion 2000 Watt Generator 73536i Surging Idle carburetor fix

Ойын-сауық

My Champion 2000W 73536i generator was surging at idle. It had maybe 16-24 hours of use on it. Other videos indicated that the idle jet gets plugged. I show where the low speed jet is located on this carburetor and how I cleaned it. It was also surging at higher rpm's so I dont know if it was the idle jet or another jet since I removed the carb sprayed carb cleaner into every port I could find. I also added a fuel filter. I removed the whole Carb, but that was probably not necessary if you just want to access the idle jet. Sorry of the jumpy video - I was just using my GoPro.
Disassembly
To access the top of the carburetor, remove the 4 phillips screws on the back service panel; remove the top 4 10mm bolts and remove the top handle; remove the fuel shutoff knob (phillips) from the control panel and the (3) 7mm fuel tank bolts and slide the tank off to the side. Then remove the 2 phillips screws holding the black servo motor (dont loose the little spring) from the top of the carburetor. This should give you enough access to the carb to remove the idle jet. Remove the clip and then pull out the idle jet with a needle nose pliers. NOTE: You dont have to actually remove the servo motor - there is an access hole for a phillips screwdriver just above the idle jet retaining screw that I just noticed!
Add a fuel filter
The only fuel filter this unit had was a coarse fuel strainer under the fill cap - it's terrible. The strainer is in the way of filling and I had removed it many times. I suspect that is how the dirt got in. I added a 75 micron small engine fuel filter between the tank and carb to prevent future issues.
Update 8-23-18: Another carb issue, this time it wasnt getting fuel. It appears the rubber float bowl gasket is deteriorating and dropping bits of rubber into the bowl, which is after my new filter. Took carb off again and sprayed carb cleaner through everything and cleaned up the gasket and its working again.
I called Champion and a whole new carb is $28 plus $7 shipping. I'm probably going to order one since I know the bowl gasket is deteriorating (cant get just the bowl or gasket).

Oh, and I see RedRocket noted the same thing in his comment below!
Fuel line notes
I damaged my fuel line taking it off with a pliers. It appears to be metric with an ID of 5mm (0.197in). 1/4 hose is too loose. 3/16 (0.1875in/4.75mm) is a little tight, but works. Gates makes #27122 0.203in hose which is probably ideal if you can find it by the foot.

I have had this Generator for about 10 years and it has been used lightly. Did a full service on it, added the filter and was able to remove the carburetor piece without removing the whole unit. Cleaned and fired up. Still has the slight surging, but i can adjust the choke slightly to correct it. Great video, especially the "Small Spring" part.

Thanks for posting this. I have a pair and one was surging/galloping like that. I didn't know that little clip held in the idle jet. Yes, it can be take out without removing the carb. Remove the top plastic then the tank, remove the servo then the top plate off the carb.. it's right there on top ready to service. I just did it now my generator idles properly again. I had a hard time finding a piece of wire thin enough to poke through the jet but eventually found some. Jets are brass so it should be mentioned that only soft copper wire should be used for that step.

Just want to add that I went ahead and did this last night and it did fix my surging issue. When I pulled out the Pilot Jet, I attempted to clean it with only a strand of wire, which did "seem" to clean it. Put the jet back in, started it and seemed to work for about a minute then back to the surging. Took it back out and cleaned the Pilot Jet again, but this time using Carb Cleaner. The Carb Cleaner worked and it appeared my Pilot Jet was gunked up with varnish. Make sure to use Carb Cleaner on these Jets. For anyone who might be doubting what is in this video, Champion acctually has a help section that describes exactly what is in this video: help.championpowerequipment.com/article/2jEw8sUrlo-cleaning-the-2000-w-inverter-pilot-jet Thanks again for making the video!

CPE tech support told me that adding a fuel filter would constitute a modification that would invalidate the warranty on my 2500 W inverter genset which began to hunt and cutout at less than 30 hours and one month old. They told me that the carb might be bad and that it was back ordered two months out. This model requires that you dismantle half of the case to remove the carb but I did it and then cleaned the carb. Runs great...for about 4 or 5 minutes. Manual says that the fuel valve may be dirty and it is acting like its is switched off or nearly so. There are no instructions about cleaning the valve anywhere. I am starting to think that the single integrated valve/choke/kill switch is not such a good thing. Never had any problem with my Hondas with separate fuel c/o valves.

You could do what I term, "a consumer managed warranty..." Buy another generator and either swap out the carb and then return this one as defective, or just return your other one saying it doesn't run right under the new receipt. Like a lemon law, which is what you got!

An excellent video, thanks. What do you think of the build quality of these champion units? They're not all that common across the water here in the UK, and am seriously considering purchasing one. I like the way that champion have designed the fuel system so that a pump is not required. Most other generators of this style seem to be fitted with a crappy little vacuum driven fuel pump that's bound to go wrong at some point! These look like nice generators. What are your thoughts? :)

  • @timgoihl

The nice thing about inverter type generators is that type can run at low speed (meaning quiet) for light loads, but it can then run at full rpm (louder) for heavier loads. But an inverter type has a lot of power electronics to create the AC, which is a failure point. The carb is clearly 'cheap' and the lack of an inline fuel filter says cheap too. This generator is light and works great for camping, mobile power tools jobs, etc. I think if you have some basic mechanical skills (could do the job I did), then you would be ok. For a home-backup situation, I think I'd go with a true 3600 rpm generator.

Awesome video. I bought this same inverter today for 40 bucks. It runs exactly like yours did in the beginning. I'm going to follow your steps to clean it and add a filter. I do have one question though. What do you think about running rotella 15w40? I run it in my dirtbike, 4wheeler and boats inboard. I'm going to try it out when I change it. I'll let you know if it blows it up. Rotella is really good oil and it's cheap. I think you're supposed to change it ever 100 hours in this thing so I think itll be a good choice.

Sounds like you got a great deal! Believe it or not, I'm not really an engine guy... just someone who likes to tinker and fix stuff. You may want to do a full tear-down of the carb to clean the float bowl and other carb ports like I did and maybe even clean/flush the fuel tank while you have it off. Did you get the manual for the generator? You can download it here: www.championpowerequipment.com/product-manuals 15W40 is not a suggested oil. Full Synthetic 5W-30 is rated for all temps from -20 to 110F. Considering the oil is not changed often, why not go with the best you can buy? It only uses 0.4 qt. Protect your investment :) ! On the recommendation of my Stihl dealer, I even run non-ethanol fuel in most of my small engines (esp those that sit around) to keep out water - the alcohol attracts water and who wants that inside an engine? Yes, the fuel costs more, but given the small amount of fuel they use, it doesn't cost much. Watch out for that little servo spring and good luck with the repair!

You mean no rpm change when you flip the (Eco)nomy switch? I would say you have a different problem. Could be wiring, the switch itself, the electronics, or the little servo motor. You could disassemble, unplug and re-plug each connector (in case there is some contact corrosion), test the Eco switch with a continuity meter, and do a visual of the wiring. Your surging at low idle might be the idle jet, but I don't think it would be related to the full speed mode. You could post a video of what it does!! Also check this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZmWrubmhc9m8daw.html The LED module seems to control some of the speed control... In other comment Tasha Teeling said: @NEEMA BORJI Mine had old gas in it and it was causing it to run poorly and the power would shut off even though it would run. Oil smelled like gas. Serviced the oil, plug, rebuilt the carb and now it's okay.

I don't think so. Just that prestrainer when filling. The shut-off valve is located right on the bottom of the tank. No place for a filter. And given the amount of debris that gets into the carb, clearly the filtering system is inadequate.

I don't think Champion has a problem so much as some Champion customers have a problem. You cannot reliably store gas in ANY machine for great lengths of time without asking for trouble. This little generator has a fuel drain screw to empty all gas from the fuel system prior to storage. Plus use medium or premium grade fuel to rule out ethanol in all small motors, plus add Stabil to the gas for long term storage. I do this for three generators, a snow blower, a lawn mower, a large boat motor, a pressure washer and several string mowers and in 50 years I've never had a problem of any kind even with gas stored over a full year. Proper maintenance procedures are vital for storage

I would suggest closer investigation, champion is a quality company not some Chinese knock off. The filter is probably reusable a fine sieve which explains the dirt in the carb. Just saying I would bet money there’s one. Maybe the online manual parts list has it. I only insist because if it’s there it can clog and you won’t find the reason.

Do not use pliers! You have wrenches. 10 mm or 3/8 inch.

9 months late but 3/8 is smaller than 10mm by enough that a 10mm will round a 3/8 bolt head, 3/8 won't fit on 10mm head at all.
