Disassembling my Champion 3400 Duel Fuel today to see why propane was flowing through the carb when the generator was not running I noticed the Inverter panel showed signs of overheating and I wondered if that was why it stopped running on gasoline yesterday and refuses to start except for a few seconds with starter fluid. Tomorrow I'm going to try unplugging like you did and see what I learn. Watching you remove the carb gives me the confidence to pull it in my quest regarding the propane-flow problem. Can't thank you enough.

You! You... SOLVED THE PROBLEM that I was having with our 'new' Champion 3100w inverter/generator. Although new, it had been stored for a couple of years with gas before I got it with a used RV. Our symptom was that it would only idle with the choke on. The carb was starved for gas because the gas had gone bad and more than half of the jets/ports were clogged/gummed-up (additives would not do the trick at that point). Choking a carb reduced the airflow and that would allow it to idle (on the limited fuel supplied) but it would not idle at the needed full throttle and that resulted in the inverter easily overloading. YOUR VIDEO showed me how to remove and clean the carb and THIS SOLVED THE PROBLEM. Our inverter/generator now purrs like a kitten (ok... maybe a little louder than that) and runs at factory specs providing all of the needed watts/amps. T H A N K Y O U !!!

You should consider becoming an instructor/teacher. I went to Nashville Auto diesel College many years ago and some of those teaching jobs pay very well in this type of work. You might even check on making videos for some generator manufacturer. My granddad is 100 years old and was telling me several months ago that people always leave out some critical part in instructions or videos, like how you told and showed exactly how to get the airbox out. ( YOU TRULY HAVE A GIFT )...

Thank you so much for the kind words. Hopefully someday I get in touch by one of the big companies and have them send generators for me to review and do repair videos on. I once did not know what to do and i relied on some "quickly made tutorials" to get directions on how to get some repairs done and well it always ended up being me figuring it out. I spent an entire year fixing generators that I didn't record until I felt my skills were good enough to begin to teach people :) Do you have any Ideas for future videos? please let me know I'd love to hear them! and of course don't forget to subscribe!

Thank you SO much for this detailed video. My Champion 3100 was surging at idle - I knew it was the low speed jet but hadn’t been able to find it on this carburetor (it’s different than all of the motorcycle carbs I’ve worked on over the years). I had taken it apart a couple of months ago but without finding the low speed jet wasn’t able to fix it. I took it apart again today and, once cleaned per your video, it started right up and purred like it was brand new. Thank you my friend - keep up the good work and keep sharing these great videos.

Thanks for the compliment Mr. James, best way to thank me is to like the video and subscribe to my channel, that way my videos will reach more people on this platform. the low speed jet has the tiniest hole in the entire fuel system that's why it's usually the first one to get clogged and make the generator run poorly.

You're very welcome! just pull the air filter open the choke and spray a little starting fluid if they run for 2 sec they need the carb to be cleaned. then go ahead and pull the carbs one at a time and clean them for best reliability. Once they're out use the hose that goes to the carb to drain all of the gas from the tanks. and only try to run them with fresh fuel in the tank. the reason why I find so many good deals around here is because people think that Stabil will make gas last forever and it does not, when you get them running and are ready to store them let them run out of gas and use the drain under the carb to drain any left over gas in the fuel bowl. that way when you need them next all you have to do is get fresh pump gas and they will fire right up unlike it happened to your friend. last make sure to change oil every 100 hours for best longevity. -Jonathan

Edit: I located the two screws that require removal. They are behind the inside handle cover. Excellent work!! I have a new 3400 dual fuel unit and want to install an exhaust extension. I would like to remove the panel on the exhaust side in order to ensure that there is no leak between the spark gap flange and the genexhaust kit flange (yes, it has a bushing). However, after all the screws and bolts are removed (5 screws and 2 bolts) it seems like there's still something holding it together at the handle, even though the three screws are removed that should hold it together. Am I missing some fastener or clip? I don't want to snap the panel. Any help would be appreciated.

Excellent. I am on my second carburetor...only have like 7 hrs on it. The first one I left it unused go a little too long. So once I sprayed inside the throttle with carburetor cleaner and it started I called Champion and they sent me another. So it was running great. I dont run it regularly because I was renovating the motorhome. Then no start again. Really??? I put some mystery oil in the gas to keep things lubricated because the first carburetor the needle for the float was stuck up and mo gas was in the bowl. But this one there is plenty of gas but won't run until I spray inside the throttle. Frustrated big time. Ready to call Champion again...your video was very concise. Great job

I'm just wondering if you could tell me how many plugs in total, you had to disconnect and reconnect to the inverter board and what was that box that was hanging on the left when you took the pannel off housing the board and battery? And do you recall there being any empty spots where something could have been plugged in but wasn't because when I look at the board from the top of mine, I see what looks to be, an empty hook up spot. • @immortalengines1605

    @immortalengines1605

    3 жыл бұрын

No, you do not need battery power to start it however this gen has an electric choke that runs off the battery so in order to start it with a dead battery what you will have to do is pop the rear cover and turn on the choke manually right at the carburetor, it has a little lever then once it starts immediately put the lever back to where it was so it runs smooth. The fuel on and off lever is quite obvious, it's located on the far left of the panel where all the switches are. it has the logo of a gas station pump on it

@@immortalengines1605 Thanks for your response. I finally got a new battery because the original would not charge more than 6.5 volts. I drained all the gas out of the tank the best I could with a siphon, drained the float bowl and had to use some ether to get it to fire off. simple choking would not do it. It ran smoothly for a short while, but now without a load on it is not purring as you would expect with no load, it is racing and returning to a lower rpm. Wondering if I need to take the carb off and clean it from any old fuel residue? I plugged in a drill also to check the load and if I pressed the trigger on the drill quickly the drill would cut off(no power from generator evidently) then in a couple seconds i could squeeze gently and keep it running indefinitely.

@@1xenman Nice yes they do that often to help their costumers, specially if you're nice about it. I would suggest that you clean the carb and try to see how it runs after it never hurts to learn a new skill. when you pull the carb to either clean it or replace it turn the fuel to "OFF" then when the carb is off the Gen turn fuel to "ON" and drain it using the fuel line in a container since that's the lowest point in the fuel system. follow my instructions in this video of how to clean the carb and please never ever leave it with fuel for longer than 2 weeks if you're not planning to use it run it out of fuel and drain the bowl on the carb. that way all you have to do is add gas and it'll fire up!

does it have compression? pull the cord slowly and you should feel resistance on the compression stroke if the compression isn't enough to drag the generator without holding it then it's either worn out or you need a valve adjustment

@immortalengines1605 I have this same generator. Runs fine, makes electricity. Carb and all is clean. My issue is it only starts on carb spray or starter fluid. Once running, stays running fine, for hours if necessary. Turn it off, won’t start unless you respray with fluid. Again once running stays running. Is there some sort of priming system I’m missing. When choked, the act of trying to start should pull in gas from top of carb. Maybe I missed something up there. Could carb solenoid be causing this problem? Thanks you 😊

check if the stepper motor is actually closing the choke when you are trying to start the stepper motors don't need much resistance on the choke or throttle shaft to stop working. remove the choke and lubricate the shaft and make sure its sooo light that blowing on it would move the butterfly. i can't stress enough of how weak the stepper motors are.

all i can say is always run it out of gas before storage and drain the carb as well, a few pulls after that ensures all gas is gone from carb. always change oil every 100 hours these engines have no filter to running the oil longer than that will slowly "sand" your engine internals with the metal it sheds..

@@immortalengines1605 hey man thanks for the reply. Is this issue of burn out only true for the inverters, or also for the larger output portables? So it seems since the only control I have is the amount of load I ask of an inverter, should I only connect it to the amount of wattage to match its running watts, or should it be less allowing for start up? I'm trying to decide which generator to buy and still protect my sensitive circuit boards.

@@olegig5166 generators are much more likely to have power issues when ran at the limit and in the heat. non inverter generators are usually used for heavy duty application such as construction sites. those don't have an inverter so they can be ran a bit harder. never start a generator with a load and if you are going to start an appliance that will heavily load the gen turn auto throttle off for it to rev up and be ready for the load rather than have it rev up on it's own after it's been current shocked.

sounds like you leave it with gas. there is no need to change the carb simply clean it as i show in this video it really isn't all that hard. next time you are going to store it do this: step 1: run it until it runs out of fuel. step 2: drain the carb, there is a little hose sticking out of the bottom of the carb that is there to drain it. and 3: with those 2 steps done manually choke it and crank it over, it wont start but it will suck whatever fuel is left in the carb and 100% rid of any residual fuel. do not store with Stabil. it only works for a limited time and then it causes even more damage because the owners trust it for far too long.

As a retired MotorCycle mechanic I found too many mistakes that unfortunately will be taken as good instructions. 1) Trying to squeeze the air box cover out of the service door opening should have immediately directed removal of another panel. You spent way more time (at high speed FF) than just removing the inverter's black end panel. That waste of time hits you more than twice, as in on the risky, likely errant reassembly too. 2) Using Brake Cleaner instead of Carb cleaner means cleaning will be different (not as good) -and- brake cleaner is very hard on rubber parts and will wash the cylinder walls of lube when sprayed into the carb opening with the engine running. 3) The Red and Yellow wired connectors MUST go to the proper inverter terminals -because- the Red wired one goes to the circuit breaker, then to the Hot terminals of the TT-30R and 5-20R outlets. The White wired terminal goes directly to the outlet Neutral terminal. You won the coin flip and got it right, as indicated by your plug in AC outlet tester's LEDs. 4) The brass tubular carb part held in by the Main Jet that fell out after tapping on the table is the Emulsion tube. The many small OD air holes rarely clog up but they do need gentile mechanical cleaning with wire to remove soft scale. 5) The 2 Brass air bleed jets beyond the choke butterfly shaft is what got sprayed, and that is the best way to fully clean and purge the low speed circuit that finally exits through 2 or sometimes 3 very small holes on the carb ID almost touching the throttle butterfly OD as the throttle just opens. Everyone ignores those holes, but they are key to solving part throttle RPM surging problems IF they are even only partially clogged! Spray them and the air bleeds first, before removing the (low speed) Pilot jet to avoid re-contaminating the Pilot jet. 6) Possibly the most important advice in using ANY generator is to use the shortest, heaviest copper wired cords to transmit power, and avoid "FRYING the inverter". Do NOT use 50' or 100' "Outdoor extension cords" (usually only 14 AWG or worse yet (thinner) 16(!) or 18(!!!) AWG) to power your neighbors refrigerator! Either move the Genny all the way over to him or use the shortest more expensive, larger wire diameter 12 AWG cord. Thinner diameter cords (the larger AWG numbers) have a higher Ohm resistance causing a Voltage drop that consequently raises the Amperage, which causes the cord itself, electric motors and Genny inverter circuits to overheat . . . all the way to destruction. 7) Finally, shutting the fuel off and running the engine DOES NOT use up all the fuel in the carb float bowl! It is better than not running the engine, but not the best it can be. Open the drain screw after your fuel-off-run-out session and see for yourself. There is still about 20% of fuel left below the main jet location after the RPM cycles increasingly wilder because of the lowering fuel level inside the carb float bowl and the engine stalls. The ONLY WAY to "drain" the carb is to loosen the drain screw and drain it through the attached clear hose into a small container, even tipping the Genny towards the drain screw location to get-it-all. On Gennys with a dedicated pull-out choke knob I pull it all the way out and pull the recoil starter quickly about 5 times to suction out any fuel wetness in the main jet and especially the ~.015" diameter metering orifice of the (low speed) pilot jet. ----------- I did learn something from you, that unplugging the (?Bad?) inverter power connector allows a bad running engine to run good, so thanks for that.
