Rehab Nightmare: Drugs, Chains and Canes - BBC Africa Eye documentary

Фильм және анимация

BBC Africa Eye’s latest investigation goes undercover in the Somali neighbourhood of Nairobi, Kenya, to expose a form of religious healing gone badly wrong.
Islamic rehab centres offer treatment to people suffering from addiction or mental health problems. But Somali reporter Jamal Osman discovers that, behind the closed doors of one rehab clinic, patients are routinely abused, beaten, and forced to drink a toxic liquid called harmala.

As a *neuroscientist* and someone who has studied addiction extensively i can confidently say that violence has no link to a positive change and here is why: think of addiction as a stain in your carpet, if you clean it quick (stop using drugs quick) the stain can be cleaned easily (you dont feel an urge to use anymore) but if you spill more things on the stain (repeatedly use of the drug) the stain will become permanent (you will be under the control of your urges/ addiction). Just like you cannot beat your home to wash the carpet, you cannot beat the men who have addictions to rid them of their issues. Addiction means no choice, no say in what they do; beating them is senseless. Leave rehab to people who know what they are doing inside and out.

This is extremely disgusting. I am a Muslim and i believe Quran can be medication but not only from just reciting it but from reading and understanding what it means and it can help spiritually , but beating and torturing people is extremely wrong and inhuman and they act as if it is normal these people who torture them need to be jailed for such acts to know how these patients feel and they were entrusted but clearly what they do is horrible . It not only happens here it must happen all over the world we need to speak out about this.

I have been to a rehab in Kenya, a good one compared to this (no physical abuse). But it still had people locked against their will in a cell and an arrangement with police to abduct people. There is no justice where there is money and power to be had.. worldwide and especially in Kenya. Such is the system we live in. Money and power are paramount, religion and human rights are an afterthought.

Honestly speaking this sort of treatment is very primitive and uncalled for, there could be a better way to handle such situations. There is even a government sitting down letting such conducts continue to take place, this must come to end we are humans and everyone deserves to be treated with respect.
