Reflections with John Pilger

27/06/12 In association with BBC College of Journalism
Renowned investigative journalist, author and documentary film-maker John Pilger will be joining us in conversation with broadcaster, journalist and writer Charles Glass to look back on half a century of reporting from around the world.
Born in Sydney, Australia, Pilger arrived in London in the 1960s and joined Reuters later moving to the London Daily Mirror, then Britain's biggest selling newspaper and undergoing remarkable changes to a serious tabloid.
He has reported from all over the world, covering numerous wars, notably Vietnam and the Middle East. He was the youngest journalist to be named Journalist of the Year and the first to win it twice.
In the United States Pilger reported the upheavals of the late 1960s and 1970s, marching with America's poor from Alabama to Washington following the assassination of Martin Luther King. He was in the same room when Robert Kennedy, the presidential candidate, was assassinated in June 1968.
His newspaper reports and films from Cambodia and East Timor alerted much of the world to those tragedies and struggles He has won an Emmy and a BAFTA for his documentaries, which have also won numerous US and European awards, such as as the Royal Television Society's Best Documentary

@@MikeJones-uc5eu we have the benefit of hindsight. Why don't you go watch his old Vietnam War, Cambodian, Timor work and with that hindsight, judge whether he was telling it like it was at the time. I dare say you are probably not old enough to know whether he told it like it was or not, and therefore buy into the US war mongering propanda. p.s. he would have been described no doubt as an antiwar leftie journalist in the VN days I am sure. Be we know by everthing that has come out since, he was always spot on. P.S. You talk CCP. Why don't you mentions Kissingers Vietnam, Cambodian, Timorese, etc. and even now at 100 is cozying up to the CCP and trying to manipulate

I was talking the other day to a young British nurse working at my uk gp surgery. She had never heard of the Khmer Rouge or Pol Pot, so sad.

Wherever I find myself I always try to look through to the heart of any situation. I think I owe my objective eye to seeing John Pilger documentaries why I was small. I remember the blackouts and seeing World in Action about Pol Pot and Cambodia. I hated the forces enabling this. Going to Jamaica soon after opened my eyes to how seemingly small measures completely destroy the fabric of a vibrant society.. In this medley having the figures ready to roll back someone like Bill Kristol is vitally important otherwise they will steamroller you, so I'm thankful for the example of John Pilger.

This video saddened me greatly, not because of all the things that were shown to be lies, or even the instant conviction by their own statements of the very people that are the cause of so much of the worlds suffering, who to this day still think that might is right and voice it so vividly in their own defence. I watched this as i have watched so many of Johns works,,which have been eye openers to people like myself, and even to those who have involved themselves in the instigation of such repatious actions, who so quickly deny the facts put before them with yet more lies. It saddened me because the work of people like John Pilger will never be over, not only will they never be over but they will continue, usually getting worse as they go despite all the hard work done to try and educate mankind into sitting up and taking notice, not only to notice but to pick up the flag and add weight to the message that this has got to stop, but saddly everything points to the future as being not only a continueation but also an increase in the frequency of this unwarranted interference in other countries affairs, and the unforgivable support of others that allow it to happen. I am sure that John will doubtless be held high in the history books for his endless efforts to bring the truth to publuc notice and encorage others to follow in his footsteps even though everybthing points to a future world that seems destined to continue down the same path towards thevday when ma n kind will pay for his greed with his life.

For tbe likes of John Pilinger in this world, i take my hat off to you sir. This world has gone totally crazy, and at least two thirds of the problems within are down to the interventionism of one coutry, which it seems nobody is prepared to say enough is enough. People have become afraid to speak tbe truth about anything, even down to their real sex, all because somebody else has forced their idear onto everyone else, not only is it forced on us, the older generation but is very clearly being forced on the next generation in a very forcesful way. As was clearly indicated by the American who was it seems totally un aware of American interventionism around the world when he said that the 72 cases you could present was rediculous, this clearly shows the we have as a world a country completly off the rails and nobody at the wheel with any form of morality what so ever. I find it more than frightening that even with people such as yourself, the truth is being redacted faster than anyone can bring it to the surface. I am to many peoples annoyance, fully aware of the real problem of the Ukraine and tbe causes of same. So many who would take me to task are totally unaware of the atual wealth of Ukraine as a country, and the fact that despite this, it is a country known for not paying its bills, i am aware tbe Russia has to my knowledge wiped tbe slate clean on no less than five occasions, and we are talking billions of dollars, they are also unaware that Europe at one stage ecused Russia of not supplying the amount tbey had been billed for only for Russia to have to show them in A.B.C. METHOD tbat their gas had indeed been stolen from them by Ukraine, all in all a very good reason for Russia NOT to want to take the whole country its trouble with a capital T and the only reason for intervention was for the stability of the huge number of Russian speaking people there and their safety, as well as not wishing to have NATO sitting on its doorstep, or even the treat of same hanging over their heads. All of which comes down to one country who in fact is under threat from NOBODY AT ALL , but clearly unaware of where its own boarders are and even more so when it comes to other peoples boarders are. For me it is both amazing and frightening how little many people are aware of such things. Having been round this globe three and a half times, i have had the chance to see the ropatous degree of occupaion of the U.S. something i find people totally un aware of, and believe it or not, their unwilling ness to check for themselve or to take anyone elses word for the fact. I feel that as time progresses it will become more and more impossilbe to project the truth, and althought i do not see this a a reason for giving up, it does become soul destroying to try and explain to others. Personally i am just glad that age is on my side for being able to leave this place sooner than later, as later requires i witness more stupidity world wide.

Yuri muckraker well, mr. glass certainly isn't a good interviewer here. what's with having YOUR GUEST read intros to his own documentary clips? the man (glass) comes of as smug, unprepared and lazy. pilger deserved better. and you're comment about 9/11 was equally odd. there was never a proper investigation into bizarre occurrences on that day that accounts for glaring omissions in NIST & 9/11 Commission reports. but "government plot" wasn't explicitly suggested by *+Brian UK*, so your 'denial' of it is peculiar...
