Real Navigation Officer Reacts to Sea of Thieves

In this reaction video, the game Sea of Thieves will be reviewed through the eyes of a real navigation officer. Does this game offer a realistic place for our pirate fellows to sail and plunder? Will this game float or stink?
Sea of Thieves is a 2018 action-adventure game developed by Rare and published by Microsoft Studios. The player assumes the role of a pirate who completes voyages from different trading companies in order to become the ultimate pirate legend. Sea of Thieves is a first-person multiplayer video game in which players cooperate with each other to explore an open world via a pirate ship. The game is described as a "shared world adventure game", which means groups of players will encounter each other regularly during their adventures, sometimes forming alliances, sometimes going head-to-head.
The game offers some the best steering dynamics I have seen in any video game. Which also has a great synergy with the dynamic world around. The waves, the winds and the changing weather will really enhance your experience. But, it also has its flaws and reinforce some misconception about the world of navigation, as you are about to see in this video.
But no matter what the final score is, I had an incredible amount of fun playing it. It offered a fantastic multiplayer platform for me and my friends to experience some incredible adventure. I highly recommend it and will definitely keep playing it in the near future.

A little bit about myself: I used to work as a navigation officer for the Canadian Coast Guard fleet for more than four years. I also did my training at the Coast Guard College in Cape Breton. I took part on multiple operations around the country, including the Arctic. Nowadays, I enjoy a comfortable life on shore. I still work for the Coast Guard, but from the office. A drastic change in my everyday life, but it gave me the opportunity to do videos like this one.
Got any movie or video game related to the navigation world you would like me to critique? Let me know in the comments!

From a gameplay designer's perspective the reason the harbor absolutely need to be kept open is to stop someone camping you at a chokepoint if you dock, most of the PvE in the game occurs on an island and if your farming chests and quests you can be at an island for 10s of minutes. If anyone rolled up to the island after you AND you had a chokepoint you needed to leave from you would stand no chance in that PvP situation. The idea of mooring the ship to the harbor is not a bad idea though, however with how the anchor mechanic works it would be practically redundant and just another trigger you would have to program into ever harbor.

Well maybe what they could do is use the same key/button to trigger the anchor and the mooring mechanic with the mooring mechanic being employed when close enough to a harbor to dock and the anchor mechanic used everywhere else. Of course, that may cause potential glitches if they activate the control while on the boundary between the harbor and the open ocean.

Even with how simplistic the "docking" mechanics are, you'd be surprised of how many people can't dock their boat properly.. To the point that Rare had to nerf the damage done when ramming the harbor since people would sink too frequently. That and the fact that nobody seems to repair their boats XDDD

I'm sure an immersive 15+ players simulation of a ship voyage, complete with chaotic orders being thrown around, would be right up some madlad's alley, lol. Really wish we could see your reaction to the game Return of the Obra Dinn! You'd have to take your time to complete it (it's an investigation, requires some brain squeezing and patience to put all the pieces together), but it's an amazing narrative and visual experience, and all the members of the crew on board and their roles are meticulously thought out. It evens gets a little instructional with a short glossary of nautical terms the average player might not be familiar with. Definitely recommend it.

When I first started playing this game I was amazed at just how complex the physics engine was! Good to hear the opinion of a surface sailor was in line with my own. I served on a submarine, so the experience is a bit different, but one of the things I remember most was inertia of the ship during maneuvers.

Currently viewing my way backwards through your videos - amazing content and I've already learned a lot of things I never considered (even though I live in Hamburg, where, y'know, one would think people know about ships). Small game recommendation: there's a co-op space game called "Artemis" which requires fairly realistic (albeit simplified) communication between officers and might be interesting to talk about in regards to the actual processes on a real bridge. It's science fiction, of course, but it's very instructional in why certain conventions in naval command structure and shorthand exist and what happens if one doesn't follow them. And it's also really fun to play with a full crew.

as someone who played this game - A LITTLE bit too much for my own good, the fun thing about "supposed to anchor." - Because it is much like it's own thing that not even real sea faring would teach I suppose and that is ... Just pull up the sails. You will stop, EVENTUALLY - you can even help that with the harpoons and what not but generally, for many reasons, it is worse idea to anchor or stay anchored if you do because in the times when other players decide to be pirates - and sadly that is just about every darn time, and make good on that pirate way even on somewhat defensless new players that are shored on a safe post... That anchor is liability for your chance of escape and survival, and the bigger the ship the nerve grindier that ticking of the anchor being pulled up. A LOT OF TIMES - that is, always except in storm, it is better to stop without the anchor but in compensation you have to learn how much inertia your ship will have until finally slowly but surely stopping, how to use steering and kick backs for your goal of stopping roughly where you want, and so on. At least this way, when the time to go comes it is sails hoist and zoom the effe out, or into the battle with better than "haha standing still with an anchor" I did say I've played this game more than is healthy.

Or you could just drop anchor, pull up sails and then pull up anchor. You'll come to a complete stop faster and possibly at a better angle. Of course, you never want to stay anchored at any point. I've learned that the hard way one too many times.

  • @CHARLES1500Turner

one thing you might find interesting from a mechanical standpoint is that the game devs based crew size on how many points of contact the og ships had (og ships didn't have harpoons) so for a sloop for example there where 2 cannon stations 4 stations for the sail and the helm. that means in total 7 spots for players to interact with the main functions of the ship. given that each ship in SOT was designed for 1 extra crewmember but that was changed for game balance basically ment that at any ship class you NEVER would have enough people in your crew to run the ship 100% efficient. This was done to encourage players to rly become efficient with what they where doing and it increased the skill ceiling by basically forcing you to pull double or triple duty. Though there are still crazy mo fos like me who solo sloop for fun. but you can tell the difference from a well oiled crew who know what they are doing and a crew who dont. the first kind of crew are the ones who will almost never sink in a session of play and will role up on you and sink you before you can get a grasp on whats going on. whereas you can see the second kind of crew from miles away and will almost always sink to a single hole in there side or blowing themselves up. its funny to watch

Your idea for harbors in the game is great. It would be neat to just pull up (slowly) to the dock and press a key to autodock with out anchoring. It would be like docking rowboats to the back for your ship. Thanks for the vid and good luck on the sea of thieves! It can be a very tough game on new players

This is an excellent video! I'd like to give a side note that the boats aren't just smaller than their real life equivalents due to the art style, or for convenience in gameplay (although I'm sure that's where the decision originated), it's a story element as well! Only ships of a certain size can make it to the sea of thieves. This is because of the Devil's Shroud, the wall of fog that hides the sea of thieves from the outside world. Anything too big is torn apart by the angry spirits in the water, smaller ships can go by without waking them up, if given an opening.

  • @uppishcub1617
    @uppishcub16172 жыл бұрын

17:35 this really depended on the size of the vessel. Obviously it was preferred to have the guns on the gun deck, but sometimes that wasn't an option. Most sloops didn't have any above water enclosed decks so they had to leave their guns exposed to the elements. Small ships often didn't have full enclosed gun decks either, Instead they were only partially covered by walkways leading across the ship. Even on ships with fully enclosed gun decks, they would often opt to place any additional guns on the weather deck. There were also small cannon called "deck guns" which were placed on the deck for repelling boarders.

You arent expected to drop the anchor in harbour. you should raise the sails to slowly come to a stop. your ship will not move if you eventualy stop (which can take some time) If you drop the anchor you are in a vunrable position if you are being ataked. because you have to raise the anchor first.

That's why ports are like that because these outposts are just Outposts put together suddenly by pirates. In the absence of raw materials, it is quite difficult to make a normal outpost. And believe me, parking is difficult for most of the players, so it's not like it's easy, people can really suffer with it

Despite being from Nova Scotia, I've only been out on the ocean 10 or 20 times but it's a testament to this game that I picked up your "kick" method naturally. I think it could do with mechanic that you lasso your boat to dock then draw it close. Another part that is unrealistic is when you have the anchor and sails up, you can spin in a circle. Likely to allow a ship to get out of a tight spot. I'd honestly play more and have fun, too bad about my mild thalassophobia.

"Sloop is playable alone, but brigantine and galleon are not" Except that one time I started a galleon alone just for lulz and basically captain jack sparrowed some reaper's gold for myself just because I wanted to say "hi" to a sloop. Yeah, the "skeleton crew" ACTUALLY is 1 for EVERY ship in this game, though Galleon is least survivable one and not viable for a fight without mates, but there is a lot of weird tactical situations for a crew to have just one member move their galleon or what not, it is really fun. It may require... Some few hours of getting bearings of the universal basics and basics of dealing with the sea alone on a sloop, but Brigantine is also VERY soloable, with a painful anchor for sure and few things that are harder to deal with than they are worth sometimes.

tying down your ship to any of the docks wouldn't make sense gameplay wise tbh, for example if another player ship is heading straight for you with bad intentions while you're docked and selling your loot or collecting, you want to get away as fast as possible so having to raise both your anchor (you honestly shouldn't anchor anyways in SoT) and loosing up the ropes would probably result in a quick death, especially on the bigger ships where raising the anchor is much slower.
