Pt.2 Real Navigation Officer Reacts to The Cost of Concordia

In this reaction video, I will use my background as a coast guard officer to give extra comments on this video made by internet historian. My intent is not to actively bash his video, but to give extra professional comments on the whole narration.
On 13 January 2012 at 21:45, Costa Concordia struck a rock in the Tyrrhenian Sea just off the eastern shore of Isola del Giglio. This tore open a 50 m (160 ft) gash on the port side of her hull, which soon flooded parts of the engine room, cutting power from the engines and ship services. As water flooded in and the ship listed, she drifted back towards the island and grounded near shore, then rolled onto her starboard side, lying in an unsteady position on a rocky underwater ledge.
The evacuation of Costa Concordia took over six hours, and of the 3,229 passengers and 1,023 crew known to have been aboard, 32 died. Francesco Schettino, the ship's captain at that time, was subsequently found guilty of manslaughter, causing a maritime accident, and abandoning his ship. The wreck was salvaged three years after the incident and then towed to the port of Genoa, where scrapping operations began.
Over all, Internet Historian did an amazing job. It was a very accurate recollection of all the events surrounding the Costa Concordia. And at the same time, fun and entertaining to watch. I can’t recommend it enough. You can find the link to his video over here:

A little bit about myself: I used to work as a navigation officer for the Canadian Coast Guard fleet for more than four years. I also did my training at the Coast Guard College in Cape Breton. I took part on multiple operations around the country, including the Arctic. Nowadays, I enjoy a comfortable life on shore. I still work for the Coast Guard, but from the office. A drastic change in my everyday life, but it gave me the opportunity to do youtube videos like this one.
Got any movie or video game related to the navigation world you would like me to critique? Let me know in the comments!

I wanted to response to a few comments from people worried that I said the N word at 12:21. In all honesty, my intent was to say ‘’Monica’’ and not the N word. I understand where the confusion came from, it was a bad mix of a quick pronunciation and a thick accent. But I just wanted to reassure you all, that is not a word I would ever use in any of my video. Sorry if I have accidently shocked anyone.

You’re no help but you aren’t a total asshole that way, you’re just someone having a very bad day and all of your bad habits catching up to ruin you at once, your very future sinking into the ocean with the ship. It’s the whole ‘put on a tux/left the ship/interviewed the next day and lied about what happened’ that ruin any of that sympathy.

De Falco’s young political career has actually been kind of interesting; he was originally a member of the populist Five Star Party’s left wing, but was kicked out because he continually refused to toe the party line (in particular, he seems to have opposed Five Star’s alliance with the anti-migrant/refugee League). From what I can tell, he’s basically been an independent since then.

Great questions, dear stranger that I have never met in real life. 1) Back in the days, every ship was legally required to have a bell on board. In case they were in a fog bank, they were supposed to ring it every 2 minutes to ''display'' their presence. Nowadays, the ‘’ship collision regulations’’ allow more modern substitutes for displaying their warning signals. But vessels do still carry those bells onboard, purely for the tradition. And I speak of experience when I say that polishing the ship’s bell is a dirty job. 2) Taking the watch means taking complete control over the direction and speed of the ship. While keeping a watch on the bridge the officer is the representative of the ship’s master and has the total responsibility of safe and smooth navigation of the ship. An officer on Watch is also in charge of the bridge team, which is there to support him in the navigation process.

I believe they can take charge of the overall rescue as a Coast Guard officer, however they wouldn't normally take over the actual ship evacuation from a captain who is competent and doing their job, only assist with the outside of the ship recovery of passengers. But in a situation where the captain has deliberately shirked their command and responsibility they absolutely would make the decision to take overall command of the situation, and it's good that they did.

After the tragic death of Naya Rivera, and the completely unfair attacks on the team that searched for her body, I imagine a lot more people now know the number one rule for search and rescue is not to get into a situation where you need to be rescued yourself, because that just forces other team members to spend time on you rather than what you're all supposed to be doing. So the lack of crew members with solid information drastically increased the chance of that happening.

that confusing Cemortan interview is always a delight to watch 🤣 i tend to rewatch Internet Historian vids and I'm always looking forward to that part and lose a few brain cells trying to guess what she actually meant. nice review btw, really informative. not planning to work on a ship though but it's always nice to learn new stuff✨

I agree about cruise ships not being safe cuz you usually see big tall ships like that capsize instead of sink down by the bow or stern

Hey Vince. You're videos came at a hard time for me and I'm a canuck myself. Dont know what your goals are in the nautical path, but you're already a captain in my eyes and I would go down with you and your ship

That’s just so cool, I never knew a lot of things you brought up like the passenger checklist, or just how damaging all that extra stuff like casinos and malls are. Even something as simple as the captain not abandoning ship, I knew it was bad, but I didn’t realize just how important it was for the personnel to stay and coordinate safety (3:30) Also I just can’t get over your reaction to the Harbor Master’s office🤣
