    Funny thing about the "Play the Hero" thing. Even when I was working retail (and once as a motel manager) the established procedure for anything like a robbery or the ilk was "Just comply with the criminal". In the end that's what you have insurance and such for. Things can be replaced, people can't. Don't try to provoke a confrontation where none exists.

    Pretty much. Having done retail and quite a few other jobs, the management always said hand off whatever they ask for. It's one of those things that goes against most of the drills for active shooter drills but that is the exception rather than the rule. It's also why getting customers out during an actual emergency is pretty wild. (or more to say slow) They don't understand what's going on and they don't want to leave. (For example we had a several tornados, where customers are supposed to stay in the building at a designated gathering spot. And another where there was a fire in the tire lube express place and customers wanted to mosey around while ton of black smoke is billowing out from one side of the store, not to mention a horrible smell.) It's why the scene of Squidward lighting himself on fire and doing nothing about it in the Krusty Krab is totally legit in my eyes, even though I know it is a cartoon.

    Note: When an aircraft carrier is maneuvering at speed her wake is essentially a 30 or so foot deep trough in the ocean where her screws have churned the water into foam. A small boat that attempted to pass through that would likely be lost with all hands. FWIW, since WWII the limiting factor on how fast you can make a standard surface ship go isn't the amount of horsepower you can design her engines to produce. It's the amount of abuse her screws, shafts and hull can take. I don't recall any procedure like what you mentioned for bypassing safeties to increase engine speed being used in the U.S Navy. On the other hand we do have an engine setting called "Emergency Ahead Flank" that is likely a different term for more or less the same thing. Finally, slightly silly [but not totally inaccurate :-) ] for what happens when a nuclear powered aircraft carrier goes to emergency ahead flank: The Chief Engineer will be summoned to the engine room if he isn't there already. He will then go to a special phone which is only used in the most dire of emergencies. Picking the phone up he will say, "God, do you have any spare horses running around up there in heaven we can borrow?" The response is heard by everyone in the engine room as a deep booming voice replies, "Bless you my son. Take all of them.:

    Yeah emergency ahead flank is the same as bypassing safeties it's only to be used in emergency since it risks the engine after a short time.

    Many of the criticisms should be of the actions of Captain Phillips and his crew. The movie depicted what they did. Based upon multiple sources I think Captain Phillips was a Jerk, but also competent. His crews seems to have been Complacent, largely because until this incident no American merchant ship had been taken by Pirates... (They forgot about the Mayguez incident c.1974) People make many bad decisions under stress. I understand why the Officer decides to try to adjust the hose while being shot at... If the Pirates get aboard it may be Fatal, so better to take a lesser risk. These guys made a lot of mistakes (as did their corporation.) Calculated Risks may be prudent. My men and I survived multiple deployments to the Middle East, and we suffered No Fatalities. I do agree with you about many of your assessments of the mistakes made by the Captain and Crew of the Maresk Alabama! The movie merely depicted those events.

    Hello, I am a second engineer onboard of cargo ships and already worked on container ships and gastankers. I liked your review to this movie, but it´s a bit recognizeable to me that you have more experience with working at the coast guard. So I just have some minor little points I wanted to correct you. I was already in several container ports arround the world and they treating their laws always a bit different. In one port you weren´t allowed to walk by yourself and without protection clothes (safety shoes, reflecting west, helmet, etc.) but i also visited several ports in which it is no problem to walk freely arround without any protection. in the most container ports or gas terminals there are internal taxi or shuttle services so that crewmembers could be transfered between the ship and the port gate safely and for that they often drive very close to the gangway of the ship, even during cargo operation. So this part of the movie at which captain Philipps boarded the ship seemed totaly realistic to me. On every ship I was working on, we never had unanounced drills, because the crew always need some preperation time to make sure nothing runs on unatended while the drill goes on and to prevent any panic from the newer crew members. Our meetings are often hold in the crew mess, or the crew recreation room. But sometimes also on the bridge because it has more than enough space for every crewmember to meet there. We also went once through the Golf of Aden and had to prepare our ship against pirates borading it. One of the orders was, as soon it looks like they board the ship, the engines will be shut down and all controlls on the bridge get deactivated. Then the crew had to be evacuated to the steering gear room where we could lock the door and hide from the pirates. So the ship would be drifting in the whole process so that the pirates didn´t gain any control over it. It was most important that they couldn´t get any hostages into their hand. It´s in my opinion also a mistake by the movie that Philipps remained on the bridge, because when the main engine is shut down there was no posibility to control the movement of the ship anymore and therefore it makes no sense for someone to remain on the bridge to "control" it. Why he stayed on the bridge and let capture himself by the pirates is for my a mistery...

    Thanks for this great contribution! Are the engines sabotaged in any way, or is the assumption the boarders would not have the technical knowledge to start them? I imagine being in the steering room has the benefit of having a smaller and easier-defended location, and denies the boarders control of the rudder in the unlikely case they get the engines operating.

  • @Drash2005

    @Drash2005

    @@Alchemy-yr3sw The engines are complicated enough and even they all working on the same pricipals, every engine has some different starting procedures. Also you need to know where are the specific valves and switches are to get the engine running. Even if a pirate crew is trained to start up a cargo ship engine, they still need a few hours to figure out what to do to start the actuall engine. When we close some air and fuel valves, supporting the running of the main engine and generators, the pirates would need quite some time just to find the right valves in the line to open and get the engine running again. And even every ship has different protection rooms to protect the crew from a pirate attack, the steering geer room would have the good advantage that you can overrite the rudder controls and steer the ship manualy, let it run in circles and make it useless for the pirates.

    You describe the procedures they way they are supposed to be followed. The captain may have been doing things his own way, made mistakes, or they may not have had the same procedures at that time. Probably a lot was revised in light of these hijackings. I've seen another recent blog by a ship's engineer where they showed they now have razor wire around the railings and armed guards on board with sniper rifles in the dangerous waters, so they aren't messing around. What they do mention at the end of the movie I found interesting is that 2/3 of the crew felt he exposed them to danger by not sticking to the protected lanes in order to save fuel/time. Guess they felt they weren't getting paid enough to get shot at on the job.

    armed guards maybe but using a scoped rifle from a boat is really difficult only an expert would hit a speed boat and even then rarely and you wouldn't need a sniper to hit them when they are trying to board but really the pirates aren't looking to kill anyone they just want loot and that kinda thing has died down massively at this point mostly due to increased military presence of all the nearby nations

    @@jacksmith-vs4ct A cargo ship with a steel deck is a much more stable firing platform than a small boat. A good marksman bracing against the superstructure could probably knock out the engine of pirate boats without killing any of them.

    Generally most companies do not have armed guards on board their ships unless the company specifies, or it's during a war or something. For sailing close to Somalia and in other dangerous waters, ships sail in convoys of many ships and generally much further away from the coast than the Maersk Alabama was. Ships also use razor wire, usually on their poop deck as well as water cannons stratigically hooked up on both port and starboard sides of the deck to protect against piracy attacks.

    With the money involved in cargo shipping, and a countries duty to protect its citizens, having affordable military drones as escorts, or standby, in high risk pirate waters, isn't a bad idea. Just because some military drones cost 6 figures or more, doesn't mean every military drone does. Lighter then air technology, like a blimp with solar power on auto pilot stand by mode, could make it practical to wait over an area or follow a ship in the presumably something like 99.99% of the time when nothing happens. Then when a ship feels it might be in danger, it could radio for a drone operator on standby to take over control of the drone from the auto pilot, to investigate. The solar power would only be keeping the blimp on course or in position during auto pilot. During a time when the drone operator takes over, either a stored battery bank or fuel tank, could be activated to give the operator the engine power for a military defensive operation of the ship. Even firing a, let's say a 40mm warhead missile, to detonate close enough infront of a pirate fast boat, could make them realise that if they try any further, then they will be killed.

    "Getting shot for a hose." No offence, but I think you are completely forgetting about the dangers of pirates boarding your ship. Once they are onboard, if the entire crew is hiding somewhere, they will find them. A barricade sounds like possibly just delaying the inevitable.
