Reacting to 'The Beach Boys' Rock & Roll HOF Induction Speech

Музыка

On Jan. 20, 1988 in New York City, 'The Beach Boys' were inducted into the Rock and Roll HOF alongside The Beatles and Bob Dylan. After some words from Brian and Carl, Mike Love took to the microphone and delivered one of the most bizarre speeches I have ever heard, in which he takes shots at numerous fellow musicians.
This is officially the last time we do a video that features Mike Love lol.

Compare this to George Harrison's generous speech earlier that evening which dealt with John Lennon and Paul McCartney's absence (for different reasons) with grace. George said that it was a pity Mike had not learnt much from mediation on response to this speech. Al Jardine tells how George Harrison and Ringo Starr hugged him after Mike Love's speech and made it clear they sympathised with him dealling with Mike

Love ruins things even BEFORE he starts his speech. While poor Brian was in the middle of reading his own speech, Love stepped in and insisted on adjusting his mic 'for' him, which left Brian so flustered he struggled to regain his composure. Anyone watching would've known what a stupid idea that was, but Love was a band mate and he still did it. The man is an idiot.

As a child of the 60's, I can tell you that Mike Love has been known to be a marginally talented asshat for decades. While Al, Carl and Dennis certainly deserve some credit in the group, the Beach Boys that we all know and love was basically Brian and the Wrecking Crew.

You were quite right when you ascribed the Beach Boys that we all know and love as being Brian and the Wrecking Crew. All their great album's and hits from their hit making years were done with the co-operation of Brian and the Wrecking Crew. There is NO WAY a great album, such as "The Beach Boys Today!", from 1965, could ever have sounded as it did if it were only the 5 guys...even including Brian. It took Brian...AND the Wrecking Crew...to create that magic. For anyone not knowing...the Wrecking Crew were a group of studio musicians who played on numerous musical recordings from everyone from Frank Sinatra to the Byrd's. Brilliant people such as Hal Blaine (drums), Carol Kaye (base), and a whole host of other people, whose names I can't recall, who added so much to the sounds of so many artists. There was a documentary about the Wrecking Crew...called "The Wrecking Crew", that came out about 3-4 years ago. Quite a brilliant documentary.

I saw Al Jardine's Beach Boys twice in the the last two years and by far except for the first Beach Boys show I saw in the 80's Al Jardine has a far superior show to Mike Love's Beach Boys because Al Jardine has better musicians with his show. He has Brian Wilson's daughters Wendy and Carnie from Wilson Phillips and the bassist from Brian Wilson's Band and Matt Jardine who is a really good singer who nails "Surf's Up" every time. He also has Bobby Figueroa who drummed with the Beach Boys many years. Ironically, Mike Love probably has a better stage presence and patter than Al Jardine who comes off cranky who probably should use his son Matt more to talk the audience (Matt and Carnie Wilson are much more engaging on stage than Al Jardine) but still Al Jardine has a much better Beach Boys show.

This may be the reason:: Springsteen, who was born and raised in Southern New Jersey, was so enamored with Woody Guthrie, he developed a South Central Plains accent which he maintains to this day. So basically, Mike was pointing out, in his f’d up way, that he lacks individuality and basically called him a copycat, phony, etc.

I've posted it before, and I'll most likely post it again. Except for the spelling, and the link, Little Douche Coupe! Brian's balding cousin! Brian, you have done SO MUCH for America's band, except you let your weak cousin in.Your brothers, well, I'm glad we could still have their recordings. Everyone says your writing skills are simply amazing. I DO agree! But, Carl's voice! Brian wrote songs about Dennis's life, for Carl to sing. We still have Brain, Alan, and his son Matt. Now, just get the name back from Little Douche Coupe! steve

Disgraceful comments by Love but Brian and Al can relax the legacy is safe, everybody knows what a piece of work Love is and sui 8:02 ng Brian to stop him performing Smile. Smile has little to do with Love it's Brian's masterpiece, and no way did he contribute writing credits for all those songs

So you are looking back nearly 40 years to judge someone who keeps the music going around the globe? Maybe he did knock those bands but neither the Stones nor the Beatles were ever as accessible globally, as the BBs by touring. He didn't lie because they didn't tour. The Stones do 180 shows? The Beatles stopped over 50 years ago. And look up the reason for the lawsuit. It originated with Landy who was trying to take over Brian's estate including the royalties to the music. Should any of us have to go back 35 or 40 years for comments? Hope that no one calls you out for stuff you said a lifetime ago. He does have respect, enough to get an Ella (Fitzgerald) award, and others, so maybe take the long view. You were likely not even born when that even took place. He's 83 and still touring.

Mike Love can’t play a single instrument yet calls out some of the most talented musicians in show business??? That’s actually nuts to me. Mike Love can’t dance either, yet calls out Mick Jagger? Mike straight up drops his tambourine during the jam thing and ironically has to pick it up at Mick Jagger’s feet while Mick Jagger is absolutely ruling the stage only minutes after Mike Love called him out. Mike doesn’t understand that he is NOTHING without the Wilson’s. He just happened to be their cousin. Sure he can sing (back in the day at least) I’ll give him that, but outside of that he has very little talent. He wrote some fine enough lyrics, can sing a good song, and that’s where it ends for him. The rest was up to the Wilson’s. He had some damn good nerve calling out musical giants like Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, and Billy Joel. He can’t hold a candle to any of them, never has and never will.

Mike Love is toxic. Imagine if he was just as cool as his cousins personality-wise. If he supported Brian's vision to take the boys in a different direction musically (starting with Pet Sounds) the Smile! album would have been made, and who knows what music would have been made after that. Mike Love is a perfect example of a narcissist whose ego grew with his fame and became delusional with his own abilities and contributions to the group. Brian Wilson made the Beach Boys - not Mike Love. Period.
