that guy I agree that not buying leather (or just not buying it *new*) is one of the easiest ways to not mess up your vegan status. I don't have sympathy for vegans that buy leather products. There are so many vegan options. Medications and cars on the other hand cannot be avoided. Buy used leather products (cars) when unavoidable, and we're golden.

that guy you are definitely correct. But depending on your definition of Veganism none of us are really Vegan. I choose my definition to be "to the best of my ability" Some people's abilities simply happen to be weaker than mine, and I don't fault them for that.

That's like killing one person is better than killing 100. If you are vegan and claim to be a vegan proudly, especially on the Internet with influence, you need to actually be vegan. Otherwise you're showing others that "sometimes" consuming animal products is okay. I'm seeing these videos everywhere at the moment and I'm honestly shocked. I didn't know this thing would happen in this movement. I'm 100% vegan. I will not buy something that contains animal products KNOWINGLY. I will go out of my way to find things not tested on animals etc.. people calling themselves vegan and not caring half the time, are part of the problem.

I still use my leather boots that I bought before I went vegan too. I also kept wearing my wool clothes for some time but eventually I bought some polar stuff and last winter I just wore those. Cause the damage was already done but I think buying a car that includes leather parts deliberately after becoming vegan and killing insects while driving a no-leather car involuntarily is not the same. So we still need to push forward and show that we care about every aspect to those industries. I mean I don't think that it's OK to buy stuff that is non-vegan after making your choice and give the wrong message to those industries.

I think everyone would work together if everyone was actually vegan lol. Kalel eats dairy 5 x a year. She isn't vegan, so why the fuck is she calling herself vegan? If someone knowingly buys a product with honey in it, they aren't vegan. If someone knowingly buys a product tested on animals, they aren't vegan. Mistakes happen and you can accidentally purchase something you thought was vegan etc.. but knowingly consuming animal products or honey means you are NOT vegan.

I recently accidentally bought a granola bar that wasn’t vegan (had egg white protein) and I ate itanyway since I had already taken a bite and I was at an airport with no vegan restaurants available, waiting on a delayed flight etc., no point I throwing it out so I just finished it. I wear suede and leather that I had from before I was vegan, to me it’s disrespectful to throw those products out before their time. am I not vegan anymore? honestly, people slip up. People have constraints sometimes. People learn. A vegan best be defined as someone who meaningfully and truthfully attempts to reduce animal suffering through any vegan means, disregarding minor digressions that may be unavoidable for some people. The majority who contributes some will do more than the some who contribute the majority.

Had the same thing happen to me at an airport. I was beyond jet lagged and went to a restaurant, ordered mixed vegetables and noodles. Seemed safe to me. Half way through eating the girl who took my order came up to me and asked if I was vegan, which I told her yes I am. She then informed me that my noodles might contain chicken broth. I thanked her for letting me know and finished my meal. I never intended to eat chicken broth and honestly it really upset me. But it was paid for. What was done was done. In my mind it was better to not waste what had been purchased already. And I don't think my "vegan card" should be taken from me because of that either ;p The joys of trying to eat when travelling, lol. I can't afford to buy something new, and I bought it when I was racist. But I'm not anymore. So everything is fine, I can still wear it. And also, its really good quality and can last me 4 winters. With art supplies, I use professional and traditional media, you can't get vegan products. Synthetic brushes are a waste if you try to use them with oil, and several mediums contain honey or other animal products. But I'd rather buy high quality products I can reuse for generations (I have things pasted down from my mother and grandfather) than buy something new because it contains no animal products.

  • @SilverNachtmahr

mintjaan T H I S. There's one professional watercolor brand that uses synthetic ox gall afaik. ONE! My favorite paints that I got as a gift contain honey. I'm not vegan, I'm trying to reduce animal cruelty and go mostly no plastic - but what am I supposed to go, dump them out (they contain cadmium btw) and buy new supplies that I can't afford because... purity? I have the luck in that I can freely use synthetic brushes, but to be honest with you, they don't last as long as a good, natural hair brush. I still have the same red sable brush I got with that set and it hasn't lost its point, while most of my synthetic brushes are nearly dead by the 4 year mark (especially those #1 detail brushes). I think that as long as you take really good care of your non-vegan stuff, it's okay to use it.

I still call myself vegan, but for restaurants, I typically don't get nit-picky about the ingredients (which I think can make veganism a better experience for servers). If the restaurant has an online menu then, of course, I will check the ingredients and see if they have a vegan/vegetarian menu, like Chipotle. If they don't, I just don't order things with obvious ingredients, like cheese, meat, sour cream, etc. At Mexican restaurants, I order black bean soups a lot, which probably have some percentage of chicken stock, but if I got a burrito then there's also a chance the beans are made with lard, and the rice with chicken stock as well. I also don't check for crushed bugs (like carmine) in foods with color, such as slushies, snow cones, etc. This honestly keeps me vegan.

I do not buy from the meat, milk or dairy industry; I use natural products with no animal components for hygiene, etc. I do all I can to support animal rights. I think all of us doing our part in any way we can should be encouraged and not discouraged. I was happy to see this vid because I thought, "Well at least one vegan in the world doesn't hate me because I'm not 100% and never will be". I don't care about being the perfect vegan, I just care about being able to live without causing a lot of harm whilst also being able to live a life and potentially show people that veganism doesn't have to be difficult. I don't ask if chips/fries are cooked with meat when I'm out for a meal, I don't ask if a veggie burger contains egg whites. I don't actively avoid beeswax because I feel like bee farming is actually helping bees to not go extinct. If I accidentally buy something not vegan (as long as it's at least vegetarian), I eat it because I've already given that money to the industries so there's no need to waste it. I feel like a lot of the issues around people becoming vegan stem from this idea of perfection. People think that they need to either be a perfect vegan or not be a vegan at all. Think how many more people would change their lifestyles if you just said "hey, don't be perfect, just be the best you can practically be". I've already managed to get my brother (a giant meat-eater and athlete who thought veganism would be bad for working out) to start considering it and cutting back on his animal intake. My sister went fully vegetarian a few years ago thanks to me. My mum is also beginning to enjoy eating vegan meals with me almost every night. All because they see me setting the "imperfect vegan" example.

A couple of years ago I fell on hard times. I started to collect parcels from a food bank as I wasn’t financially stable, due to being made redundant and with a vegan family to feed. There was no option to collect a vegan food parcel and I found that the parcels contained a balanced diet based on an omnivore standard. The packages where given by others in the community some even included inspiring notes. With no choice my family ate from these packages, the way I saw it an animal had sadly died and suffered for this, if I had thrown it away that would have all been for nothing. And honestly the amount of ridicule I got from my local vegan community was horrendous. I was being told I was a vile mother for feeding my baby’s rotting animal flesh, when it wasn’t what I wanted but it was feed them the parcels or have them starve. I was already mentally unwell due to the situation and I felt as if my home community was against me. Luckily everything turn around for us and we ended up in a good financially stable place. To this day I still make sure to donate as many vegan food parcels as I can to that very food bank as what I experienced was horrible. Especially form my community that was supposed to be a caring community

I personally buy second hand clothing and I prefer to purchase the natural products because they last longer and pollute less in washing and decomposition. The plastic we replace them with aren’t good for the environment, people, or animals in the long run. Is my clothing “vegan?” No. However the mindset of reducing production with animal products and the plastics is end game vegan. The legalism in the vegan community is awful and there is more than one way for sure to do a vegan lifestyle.

I loved this video! The things I "cheat" with: 1) I use cruelty-free hair products that contain honey, keratin & silk amino acids (99.99% of the vegan hair products I've researched are not made for thick, Afro-textured hair) 2) I buy leather shoes every 2 years or so (I have huge feet, the shoes last longer & I work in a conservative corporate setting) 3) A veggie burger menu option that I order as a dinner option when I work late likely contains eggs or egg whites; I haven't checked but it seems like it. 4) I eat Kind bars every so often; they contain honey. 5) Based on this video, my razor heads likely contain glycerin. EDIT: 6) Oh! I drive a car, too.

I'm not trying to be that person. All of these "cheats" are perfectly fine. I am also not African American, and my hair probably isn't quite the same. I am Maori, and my hair is thick and frizzy and difficult. I go to a hairdresser who uses a non-vegan shampoo and conditioner, and I don't care, because it took me years to find him. Normally hairdressers didn't get my hair, literally abused me, and I left crying every single time. I have found a good vegan shampoo and conditioner, but I also use a lot of argon oil, and the lifesaver, I use coconut oil as a hairmask, and leave it on for twenty minutes before I comb it and wash it out. These are just some extra things that you could try, rather than replacements as such- and I also know that I don't know whether those things would even be effective at all. I'm just mentioning it, because the coconut has done so well for me.

Used to be friends with someone but she kept doubling down on just how vegan she could be. That's great if that's your jam but often times they turn off more people from trying to chose vegan products or have meatless monday because what does it matter. The video I am talking about really made me sure that I am making the right choise about feeding me cats WHAT THEY WANT TO EAT. I'm super passionated about this topic, because people have really brought me down for feeding my cats what I feel is best for them. And the best is non-vegan cat food. I was just thinking about this last night! Specifically when people are transitioning from non-vegan to vegan, stop making them feel bad for not going 100% vegan overnight! If people have eaten meat and dairy with every meal for their whole lives, what is the likelihood that they will completely give that up and never ever eat non-vegan items again? Even if people go from a meat heavy diet to eating vegetarian meals a few times a week, I’m proud of them! For some people it is extremely difficult to give up those food items and their effort still matters!

I think there are levels. It's up to you which level you are on. I don't usually tell people that are not in my circle that I'm vegan unless the conversation calls for it. If I'm offered animal products. I simply say no thank you. I don't want to tell people what I eat for protein or hear people go on ad nauseam about how they could never give up meat. I didn't ask you to. I was just eating my chickpea sandwich minding my own business. *I am not at the level of giving up old leather. *I'm not at the reducing the use of plastics level.(I recycle though) *Definitely not at the composting level. *I don't buy honey but if its in a plant based food. I'll eat it. * If an insect is in my house, it's dead. I'm at the entry level. I eat plant based meals and I don't intentionally buy animal products if I can avoid it. Probably about 75 percent vegan.

I got so much hatred for my ideas and opinions (someone even mentioning RAPE - thankfully that comment was flagged and deleted) As I said in my comment in Kalel’s video - I call myself vegan because that’s the idea that I identify with most and people understand that label - just like I say I’m Irish even though I’m not 100% Irish - I’m mostly Irish and I identify and have most of my characteristics from Irish people. Try your hardest, educate yourself and others and still remember that it’s okay to sometimes put your happiness and mental health first, because you are also very important.

vegancarblifter I try my hardest, but like Swayze stated, I still have food in my pantry that isn’t vegan (that no one wants) and I don’t want to waste. I have never even looked at my old clothes (I don’t ever buy clothes, they are all five+ years old) so I don’t know if all of my clothes are vegan. And I definitely eaten a food item after I paid for it (and delivery) when it wasn’t 100% vegan because I hate being wasteful more. I say I’m vegan because people have a basic understanding of what that means but those who truly know me knows my much more complex feelings about veganism, the environment, and how everyone in society be treated.

that guy “veganism does not require perfectionism”. You’re right. It doesn’t. It is so very hard to be perfect in anything you try to do in life. I cannot donate already opened products (like waffle mix) and my friends and family have no interest in taking them (and if they take them out of pity and they go to waste than is that any better?) Labels can be bad, but they are there for a reason. They help you easily identify something. If I can’t say that I am not a vegan because I refuse to waste what I already have, then is swayze a vegan? Is anyone a TRUE vegan? “Breaking” veganism is already hard enough on my own self worth, but to have people I don’t know tell me I’m worthless because I’m doing the best I can is where I begin to become disgusted with the whole idea of veganism. Don’t be the Westboro Baptist church of vegans and make everyone hate and question why anyone would want to a part of something so disgusting because of the way you preach it.

You can be 98% vegan but don't call yourself vegan if you are going to consume animal products knowingly. If you have products in your pantry and can't give them to friends or family or homeless shelters etc.. and you actually want to consume them.. you still aren't vegan. I had stuff in my pantry and fridge after going vegan and I did NOT eat it. I'd rather 'waste', than eat that disgusting corpse or secretion. You aren't vegan. Great you are on your way though.. but this shouldn't be an argument!! So confused at how it is.

I have to say that it's good to have a process and learn. I think most vegans are understanding of that. Even militant ones. But when some vegans try to justify, if they are doing something that is so far from veganism - THAT is not okay. You have to act on what you know. So if you already know that buying leather products is actually cows skin and they suffer and die for it, and you buy it anyway because of ridiculous statements like ''I can't afford none leather shoes, because they break'' or other egoistic statements like that, you can't call yourself a vegan. Nope :) Because that cow couldn't afford to lose it's skin, and that goes with anything else non vegan. But I honor your process of becoming more vegan.

Breathing Oxyjenn there’s no such thing as a 99% vegan. The goal is to reduce animal exploitation and suffering as far as practically possible. That doesn’t mean not stepping on an ant accidentally. It also doesn’t mean eating a bug in a salad accidentally. But by definition it certainly doesn’t mean going to a steak house once a while or buying candy bars with breastmilk of a cow inside. And no, traces don’t count as non-vegan. Even vegan products have the claim “may contain traces of...dairy, eggs, honey, etc.” That’s simply for legal reasons in case someone is allergic. It doesn’t mean you aren’t vegan if you ingest traces. Get your definition right UV. Defending stupid candy bars and cosmetics that are being tested on feeling and suffering animals for pure selfishness has nothing to do with the definition of being vegan at all.

I think vegans are those who no longer even see meat/dairy as food. If there are those who want to eat meat and dairy every once in a while, I think by definition they are not vegans. Going vegan really isn't a choice as much as you stop seeing meat/dairy as food, period. I really didn't even plan on going vegan nor did I want to, but once I started to empathize with the farm animals who are so abused, my mind just stopped seeing them as "food source"

That's bs... more grains are harvested to feed livestock than to feed humans, so considering veganism aims to cause the least harm, being vegan would still cause less than being non-vegan.

The difference is, killing the insects is completely unavoidable. Like when you go for a run and you swallow an insect by accident. Kalel knows exactly what she's doing, buying candy with milk, buying leather boots etc. These acts are intentional, not accidental, or even out of ignorance. It's directly supporting the industry and can easily be avoided by simply not buying them.

I use L’Oréal hair dye 3-4 times a year. While L’Oréal is CF in the states, they sell in China. As a US citizen, the products I am using are not tested on animals. That’s enough for me. I don’t use chapstick that often but if I am in pain I WILL stop by a gas station or grocery store to grab some regular chapstick. I would be an asshole if I said no to my grandmas shortbread cookies at Christmas time, one of the few times a year I can see her because she lives out of state. Im a poor college student, I don’t have time to be picky about what razors I buy. I don’t return food if I ordered it without cheese and it comes with it. That would be a waste of food and I’m paying for it anyway since there’s no price deduction for having it removed in the first place. If I’m on a road trip and my only option is a Burger King morning star patty, I don’t feel bad about eating it. I don’t ask restaurants about what broth, frying oil, etc they use. If the menu item contains no meat, dairy, or egg then that’s enough. I’m not going to stress out an already busy server over it. I don’t purchase bottles of honey and don’t really purchase items with honey unless my only option is a Kind bar or something with honey. Plus sometimes Jamba Juice forgets I asked for no honey on my smoothie bowl. I really don’t care about honey too much though since its super rare I actually purchase it. I’ll eat something that is technically vegan but has honey like baked goods if they’re available at a school or work function. When I can afford shoes, I won’t buy fully leather ones, but if they happen to have small amounts of leather I don’t get upset by it because I don’t have the money to drop $80 on a pair of vegan versions of Vans. Finding a good faux leather belt has been impossible for me. Had to resort to an inexpensive leather one off amazon and it’s lasted so much longer than the faux ones. Which means my overall consumption is lower which I think is still a good thing. STILL VEGAN.

I already have celica disease (no gluton) so I make meal prepping hard enough. If I'm cooking I'll try to make it vegan. I want to be vegan for the animals and the environment but I'm taking it slow and not punishing myself for slip ups. Our mistakes are what let us learn.

Just thought I’d update that I wore the leather birks until they no longer have treads on the bottom and are a slipping hazard. I purchased a vegan pair of birkenstocks, but also kept the leather birkenstocks and use them as outdoor pool or lake shoes to keep them out of a landfill and prevent my new pair of shoes from receiving damage. Also, during the birth of my 8 month old son; we both would be dead right now if I refused medication. So fuck that rule

Please do not tell me what I am and am not if you do not know me personally. All I was saying is that it is helpful to make becoming vegan as easy as possible, that's it. Full stop. Hi :) so I’m going to be honest here... I was vegan for years. And I never had any health issues from it...and it only did good for my body. However, I was taught by a lot of the vegan community that if you can’t eat fully vegan, then you can’t call yourself a vegan. I do a lot of traveling and sometimes find myself in 3rd world countries that don’t have access to vegan foods. So I eat like a 98%-99% vegan lifestyle but when I travel if there isn’t a vegan option then I do my best. I made a KZread video on the subject a couple days ago (I just started a KZread channel lol) and I just wanted to be honest about it. I don’t know, it just didn’t feel right calling myself 100% vegan when in fact I wasn’t always able to eat 100% vegan. I wanted to be honest you know? I think I feel the need to be a perfect vegan because that’s what a lot of the community taught. I didn’t want to say that I follow something 100% when I can’t always follow it to a geographical situation. I’d appreciate thoughts on this, but as long as they’re from a place of kindness and not to be demeaning. I’m doing the best I can, and being plant based 98% of the time is STILL saving animals and helping the planet... I’m grateful there’s a lot of love in the vegan and plant based communities :)

It's why i won't get rid of my cat. I, myself, do not eat meat, but my cat needs it. He loves me too much and i feel it would be cruel to give him up. I also know that pet food is made from bones, meat trimmings and organs, so the animal already died to feed another human, so it was already dead and the parts would usually go to waste. Or I tell myself that. I also don't say i'm vegan, but to make others understand, i say plant-based. I have medicine i have to take, so i don't feel bad.

I'm still eating it (I don't eat a lot of honey so that's why it's taking so long, I just usually put like a teaspoon in oatmeal to sweeten it) and I will eat it until it runs out. Also, I don't really check to see if wine is vegan or not (because I don't drink that much anyways). So I guess I'm a 'fake vegan'.

I only watched 3 minutes of your video but I think I get the gist of things. "Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose." If I need to buy a car and I can't afford a vegan car, is it possible or practicable for me to buy a vegan car? No. Therefore I can still be vegan while buying a car that is not fully vegan. (There is no possible/practicable vegan alternative) If I need to buy chocolate and I can afford to buy vegan chocolate, is it possible or practicable for me to buy the vegan chocolate? Yes. Buying non-vegan chocolate would be unnecessarily contributing to animal agriculture and therefore not vegan. I don't understand why some people have such a hard time with this. I use medication because it's necessary in most cases. I am still vegan because I don't contribute to animal exploitation or cruelty unless it is absolutely necessary that I do so. Flexitarianism is awesome and I totally support it. I am so proud of friends around me that are going plant based and vegetarian. But if my vegetarian friend called themselves vegan, I would say "Hold up, but you still eat eggs weekly. If you call yourself vegan, people will believe that eating eggs is vegan. Don't call yourself vegan until you're living vegan." I ask you this: Does contributing to animal cruelty and exploitation UNNECESSARILY constitute as vegan? No. Kalel is doing an awesome thing. I'm not going to say that a person is vegan or not vegan, but I will say that purchasing non-vegan products and therefore contributing to animal exploitation and suffering is not vegan.

If you need the meds to survive then yes that's fine, go to seaworld without having a gun pointed to your head? no that's fucked up, ride a horse without it being a life or death situation? no that's fucked up. As far as is possible and practicable.

seems kalel and unnatural vegan are really in the same boat, not really vegan if you choose to eat dairy from taco bell when your order is wrong with cheese. no! give it to someone else. that is not a justification to eat it, sounds vegetarian to me which they now obviously are, or have been. unsubscribed from both as of now i despise fakes.

No if they get your order wrong it's not your fault. But if you actually go out and say hey I would like a chocolate bar that has dairy in it you aren't vegan.

I needed this video more than I realized! I'm vegan but have severe food allergies to most raw fruits and veggies. I try so hard and it always feels like not enough because I'm always slipping up. I've been "vegan" for five years but truly haven't lasted a year without eating something small that has animal products in it. Anyways this video is just so helpful so thank-you

Love someone with a balanced, moderate, logical viewpoint like yourself. ❤️ I hope Kalel sees this!
