Blaire White: Quitting vegan is your choice, but please stop spreading lies

My response to "Why I Stopped Being Vegan After 10 Years" by Blair White. Should vegans worry about liver damage from supplements like vitamin D and B12?

I’m glad you took the criticism well. Only the worst vegans really care that you stopped being vegan. I’ve only been vegan for 2 years and it has been tiring to go out and socialize. I’ve decided to not care about broth, breads, and other hidden animal products. I just order things no meat, or cheese and I’m good to go.

TheNerdyVlogger there’s no problem with that at all! I’ve been fully vegan for 5 years and at times it can be tough and others, it’s awesome when eating out. But I will not say that there have been times where I feel like I want a bit more when dining or just wonder. As well, I learned to not be as picky such as not caring about cross-contamination and such. No biggie! And I have a veg friend who is vegan as much as he can be! So he’ll eat meat when he can’t find anything else. Every little bit helps!

Shaun and Shon b12 isn’t created by animals. It’s created by bacteria. We used to get it from unwashed/uncooked food and drinking water. Now it’s in fortified food and good that has feces on it like meat.

You're not vegan if you eat animals when you're out and about. Either you're against animal exploitation or not. "Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose." I know it;s not what people like to hear. But vegan means vegan. Not "sometimes i skip meat."

@@leonmulder4889 So because that's what your dictionary says, that's the way it has to be? Do you have any idea how language works? The meaning of words can change and mean whatever the hell enough people accept the word to mean. Like "sick" and "tight" meaning cool, or YEET! Ain't. I could go on for days. Language always comes BEFORE dicitionaries. If someone wants to say they eat vegan at home, or make a word or phrase like "home vegan" I could totally see it catch on. You should be happy more people want to reduce their animal consumption. If enough people are home vegans, we can shut down many factory farms AND promote more vegan foods in mainstream society ,hopefully enticing MORE people to be home vegans. This can result in more decent vegan restaurants being built in even smaller communities, giving people more animal free options when they eat out or have social events. TL;DR by pushing up your glasses and quoting some dictionary, you are doing shit for the vegan movement.

It is very clear from the stream with AY that the health claims are just a convincer to allow Blaire to justify to herself and others why it is ethical for her to consume animal products. It is very obvious that the real reason behind this shift is convenience and pressure from family and friends. This is not a palatable enough reason of course, which is why the "health" concerns have been out forward.

+Andrea Robyn actually the studies Vegan Gains cited are applicable to his (Blair White's) situation because those studies show that someone taking all the damn synthetic hormones he's taking to try to be feminine is virtually guaranteed to have nutrient deficiencies and will therefore NEEEEED to supplement, which demands a debate on whether or not being a tranny is sustainable! I personally think it should be ILLEGAL for medical centers to turn someone into a tranny, people with Gender Dysphoria need to address the biochemical imbalance in their brains that's causing that, they need psychotherapy, and either brain supplements, or psychiatric drugs if supplements don't work, NOT surgery to try to make them into something they can not be naturally.

"The reality is that many vegans would benefit from including some 'unnatural' foods in their diets". Preach! 👏 I so appreciate that you consistently avoid the "natural vegan" fallacy 😁. Some unnatural stuff is bad, some isn't (same for natural stuff!). Also, someone needs to break it to Blaire that farm animals are heavily supplemented! It's a shame that she fell for the standard McDougall (and others) line that we don't need supplements (hopefully he's changed his tune on that, but I did notice he only grudgingly admits to the need for vitamin B12 supplementation).

+ModVegan, B-12 would not be necessary if one is living like ancestral humans lived, FORAGED for food, ate everything fresh from the ground, from the tree, from the vine, etc, because B-12 comes from the micro organisms in dirt, but we don't get that in modern civilization due to fruits and vegetables in the grocery stores being HEAVILY WASHED. The human body does produce some of it's own, but ideally we should be getting either from dirt, or supplementation. Another drawback to living in modern civilization is due to our fruits, and vegetables not being fresh, it's deficient in a lot of nutrients, which is why I am a big believer in supplementing, if nothing else a daily multivitamin. Having said, I have a friend in Hawaii who does not eat a 100% WFPB diet, she loves her damn junk food, she's in her 60s, and NEVER supplements for anything, and she's still in good health for her age, and has never had a nutrient deficiency in any nutrient.

+ala I agree with McDougal on the Starch Based Diet, there are benefits to eating a lot of starches in one's diet, depending one's lifestyle, some lifestyles one would be more suited to a vegetable heavy diet, some a fruit heavy diet, some a starch heavy diet, some a protein heavy diet, but those are all variations of WFPB. What I strongly advise AGAINST is any of those fad diets like Raw Till 4 for example, or Keto (There is Vegan Ketogenic, but advise even against that, it's still a fad diet, and I am against allllll fad diets!). I believe in what has been proven scientifically which is Whole Foods Plant Based! What variation of that will work best is dependent on one's lifestyle. For example for one how is highly athletically active, a protein heavy diet would be advantageous, that's why folks like Vegan Gains (Myyyyy Heeeeero!) eat a protein heavy diet.

I think what she means is that she wasn’t comfortable taking so many pills since she is trans. Which is totally fine! The vegan life isn’t for everyone. But I’m glad someone responded to this with facts. You know? You’re not mean or harsh. It’s more educational. Edit. Anyone who says everyone HAS to be vegan or even questions it: stop. Not everyone wants to follow, just like how no one can tell me to eat meat, we can’t tell them to give it up. We can educate, but that’s all. Let people be people. Whether her reasons were acceptable to you or not doesn’t matter, it’s her life. Make videos, educate people kindly, use the subject as projects in school, anything to get the word out. But that’s all we can do. The harder we push the harder they pull. Be kind 😇 that is all. (And to those who get it, thank you ❤️)

Caroline Olivia totally agree but one would think she could take more vitamins or phase in some animal foods temporarily and then shift back once her levels are good to a plant based diet more carefully planned and including a regular multi-vitamin instead of just leaving the lifestyle completely. She also complained about having to ask for special menus etc so she could shift so that she is only vegan at home.

  • @sacmakiz

Yeah. And I think being at the age of 24 brings different mindset. Of course she is no longer that rebel 14 years old boy. He rebelled against animal exploitation while rebelling against being a boy. She chose to go through a surgery to become a woman, the gender she felt more comfortable with. She has changed physically, mentally, emotionally. Also became a Internet celebrity, dating a most likely meat eater guy. We all know the "guilt" and frustration comes from that intimate partner is way different than us. Add being a Trans on top. It must be hard for her to be that "different" She might like to feel 'normal', 'familiar', 'like everybody else' at this stage in her life. And the lack of certain nutrients might have been the last drop in her conclusion. She made up her mind long ago, imho. It was just a justification, rationalization for post a video which got backfired because it lacks the accuracy and authenticity. Vegans online attack hard on people for not being 'perfect vegan' but we're all different humans after all even though our motivations and reasons to be or not to be vegan might be similar as much as differ from the rest. I wish her good luck in her growth. Veganism is a way of thinking, expressing your ethical stand point in your day to day life. That can change over time as we see here, because people change, that's totally normal. What's important is that distinguishing the false excuses and main motivations from each other so we won't confuse more people in their journey. It's not the easiest road to travel anyway. I personally enjoy being a vegan. If it becomes very convenient some day and I can't find a solution, yeah I might change my mind as well but I'm a bit too honest with my motivations in my head, so that hardly will happen.

I think most thinkers lack a good level of emotional intelligence especially at a young age. They rationalize their excuses and it sounds and feels inauthentic although they think they're doing a good job of representing it. Clearly, Blair wants an easier life and veganism no longer serves that purpose. She wants to be healthy without trying so hard because a life as a trans is already hard for her, physically and mentally. Also she wants to enjoy life with friends and boyfriend without constantly feeling like an alien. She wants to feel like "I'm one of them" This can be resolved with clear understanding of your emotional reasons and finding ways to resolve it while staying vegan but it seems like she's burnt out and lost her passion to it since she became passionate about veganism at a very young age like 14. My views since then has changed drastically, it's no surprise she no longer carries the same logic. It's just she has changed and veganism remains the same. If I hadn't gone vegan at the age when I became more mature, I would like to quit at some point too. It's just how things work. She's not trying to lie like Vegan Gains says, she just isn't aware of her emotional reasons or she isn't mature enough to admit them and take it into consideration yet.

Hesus That’s a little rude to assume. She’s out there living her life the way she wants. It’s not like it’s a simple thing to just throw away after 10 years. She gave her reasons for quitting the vegan lifestyle. It doesn’t have to fit what you want it to be. Those are her reasons and they are valid.

One of the things you said in this video is EXACTLY why I watch you. "Go vegan, even if you are vegan only at home". I believe that is the best way to see it. I know a friend of mine too, she lives far away and she is vegan, but when she comes home to her parents and grandparents, she can't just say no to what her grandma cooks her! So she is fine with eating it. I think vegans have to really understand that and respect other peoples decisions. Why does vegan have to mean that you eat vegan 100000% of the time? This obsession that we have to just label people is at play here as well I think. You can only call yourself vegan if you haven't had any animal product in years or smth. I think it's ridiculous. Find the right diet for you and just be as vegan as you can possibly be, because we already know its benefits.

I'm feeding myself but I still feel like I'm being forced and become bitter that these people don't respect me and my ethics... That it results into me betraying my values. Social pressure is a nightmare for me. I hate being the center of attention but they do it to me, THEY don't respect ME.

But trying to go to work potlucks, restaurants with friends, or especially family dinners has been harder than I thought as a vegan. I do eat dairy a few times a month and maybe eggs once a month. Its like a doctor told her her nutrients were low and she said "hm ok. Gonna eat meat and dairy now, cause its good for me!!". Plus Blaire is on testosterone blocker Spirolactone that blocks sodium and a few other vitamins from being absorbed properly. Being Vegan is challenging in regards to nutrients but shes also a trans woman and trans women take hormone blockers and estrogen boosters, and many transwomen are nutrient deficient because their doctor didnt fully inform them of what they should eat because of HRT effects.

I think the liver damage statement refers to the plastic capsules that the supplements are in a lot of the time. I don’t have enough info to elaborate but I’ve heard concerns that when you’re taking so many supplements your liver also has to break down the actual capsule and that it can be harsh on the liver. A way to get around this is open the cap and dump directly in your mouth or in water and drink (can be annoying) but the contents of the capsules won’t cause damage to your liver. That being said I used to be vegan and supplement, it went well but eventually I came to the same reasoning as Blair and decided to just eat the food that has the nutrition. I eat only the amount of animal product that my body needs to be healthy and make sure the animals were raised ethically, sustainably and locally. Plants are alive and sentient too. Vegan farming puts stress on the environment too. Just do your best 💗

The thing is, we don't know where this idea of destroying her liver came from. It could have been that after being on the supplements her doctor told her that she was having interactions or that her supplementing was overkill or that the combinations she was consuming were causing her harm. She had to get that idea from somewhere and it's possible that was simply her experience. When I had to supplement it was a lot of trial and error and it got exhausting and more difficult before it got easier. It's possible her doctor just told her to switch back to a plant-based omnivorous lifestyle until things level off. She's said that once she gets healthy again she may go back, so while I see the criticism of some of her points, antagonizing her isn't going to encourage her to return, or at least do so publicly.

You are right in most of the points evaluated. About the sun, I think your fear of the greatstar is mislead. I live in the south of Brazil, and I have never seen a case of skin cancer in the population of my city and neighboring cities. In my town, which was born from a fishing village, everyone gets sun all day, fishermen spend hours and hours in the open sea without sun protection, and there is no case of skin cancer. Most people are descendants of Azoreans, hence the fishing tradition. I, my father, my mother, my uncles and aunts, grandma and grandpa, we all live in the sun, and we love the sun. There was never a problem in any generation. I believe that skin cancer, like other cancers, is a conjuncture of nutritional deficiency, lifestyle and intoxication, and in this case, a skin not adapted to the latitude of the moment. It is our nature, we evolve under the sun, as other beings did; we need the healing rays of the sun. you should take a look at the latest discoveries about the physics of cells, and the interaction with electromagnetic fields of the sun. You may noted also, that the people of the blue zones, also all centenarians, have had an active life under the sun.

I quit being vegan bc of this channel. I realized it doesn't really matter. If not everyone will go vegan suffering will always be there. And if my goal morally is to just reduce suffering I can (and the rest of the world can more realistically) through plant based eating with small amounts of animal products. I realized most of the claims by vegans about health, animal and environmental welfare were either entirely not true or extremely exaggerated. Everything I became vegan for was a lie or part of a lie. Most vegans are just unwitting snake oil salesmen. My mood, energy, health, bank account, relationships etc all improved when I let go of veganism and took a less strict approach. And yes, I took supplements....so many different supplements (as suggested by this channel). But my health still suffered. I got tired of the guess work of veganism. Is this really healthy?Who's telling the truth? Who's research can you trust? Who even knows what they are talking about? Why am I listening to youtubers over doctors? So much uncertainty. So much confusion. It's really just not worth it. Not in a long term sustainable way.

CM G I know this is late, but I understand if you health really couldn’t sustain a vegan diet, but all rights movements started with one person. African America, women, etc. they all started with one people then people following them, more and more people are going vegan. Who knows maybe the future is vegan, all I know is that I’m trying to help the world be vegan too. Veganism is really amazing, and I’m not the healthy vegan out there but I feel so better without eating animal products, with the health aspect and the guilt aspect. Of course do what’s right for you, but don’t get strung up with uncertainty that’s out there (I hope this wasn’t mean)

I became vegan when I was freshly thirteen. Prior to me changing my diet and lifestyle, I was anemic and suffering from chronic pain. When I informed my rheumatologist of eating a vegan diet, she told me,”You just need go eat a hamburger once a week. Then you will be fine. ” Three months after that, I went to the same doctor and had labs preformed. My anemia and other deficiencies were healed in 90 days. This notion that vegans and vegetarians are lacking and deficient, if simply false and damaging. Diets work well for one and horrible for another. For me, a vegan diet is the most healthy diet for me. Now, I do not have chronic pain ( I am diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis).

Being at the age of 24 brings different mindset. Of course she is no longer that rebel 14 years old boy. He rebelled against animal exploitation while rebelling against being a boy. She chose to go through a surgery to become a woman, the gender she felt more comfortable with. She has changed physically, mentally, emotionally. Also become a Internet celebrity, dating a most likely meat eater guy.

I don't think that her giving her personal views on why she stopped being vegan isn't "spreading lies", she is allowed to have her views without being accused of "spreading" anything. people are allowed to have personal views, nobody thinks she is an authority on anything medically speaking. So take the rhetoric down a notch.

Some supps probably do contribute to liver damage because : 1-Many use artificial forms of nutrients. Especially cheaper brands.... Although I see even Solgar Co. (expensive) sometimes using artificial forms too. 2-Most supps are poorly absorbed, so you need very high doses (3000% RDA) which means even more units for the liver to process. The liver is a chemical processing plant. So, more units of chems, or of course food, means more work. This is probably why I got stabbing liver pains as a high carb, low fat wholefoods vegan. I had to eat so much more. I've also had liver pain from high dose b complex. High carb means you have to eat a lot more grams of food to get the same calories as someone on low carb, high fat. Secondly, vegan foods tend to be less nutrient dense than animal products. So, again you must eat more grams of food to get the same amount of nutrients. Which means more work for the liver. Compare 100g kidney beans to 100g kidneys on chronometer. It's quickly apparent that you need to eat about 4x as much kidney beans. That's ideal as a short term thing for overweight people who enjoy/are capable of eating huge portions, and whose livers can handle all the extra grams of food and carbs. I'm guessing this is the reason that vegan gurus tend to target overweight but young people. They know very well that overweight people eating junk food often get amazing short term results on a vegan wholefoods diet. Those who are older, underweight and can't handle high carb tend to do badly, especially as time goes on. *One size fits all? Probably the greatest lie ever told*

Just making a comment as this just came across on the auto play. There is some people out there that cannot take the supplements (iron & B12) because of genetic backgrounds. Their bodies will naturally either pass on these extra supplements and not get any benefit out of them, or they will double down and be hidden by the body - mainly in the liver. The likelihood is fairly small for the general population of having these conditions, but considering that Blair has said she is naturally pale, it is a concern that she may not be able to process the supplements and wouldn't be known by her doctor until they are tried. Also with her hormone therapy there could be drug interactions, that you nor the rest of the internet is not privy to. Nor should they unless Blair wishes it to be so. I do support your comment on the end though. I understand how hard a specialized diet can be.

I love that you are okay with it not being all or nothing. I would absolutely love to be a vegan, and I don't eat meat, unfortunately I also can't eat fruits or vegetables. Due to health issues, I can't process things that aren't basically processed to the point it's pre-digested. Meat gives me the same issue. I do eat dairy periodically, but not much, and eggs, but again not often. I'll feel less guilty about it now, that I can't go vegan, and I'll just hope we can sort out my gut so I can go vegan. It makes me angry when people tell me I should just go vegan, because it would "heal" my gut. I have gastroparesis, severe gastritis, and periodic issues with lower GI ulcerations. I also can't eat gluten. (Basically, I live life on potatoes and gluten free bread. It's not super exciting, but it is what it is, and I supplement with vitamin infusions.) High dose IV vitamin and amino acids over a long period of time, daily, can have an impact on your kidneys or your liver, but again, it's high doses to compensate for not eating any of those complexes at all, and it's also IV loads of the thing. When you're on supplements like that, you're definitely monitored, as Blaire would be given her MTF medications, too.

Dogs show a clear meat bias and crave it and it's not like dog food is a main reason for animal agriculture.

My friends and family don't understand it. But my protein and iron levels are always really good. I get my levels checked every 3 to 6 months. Once my vitamin D was a little low and my doctor put me on supplements. I'm fine now. You can´t make up for an extreme lack of vitamins by taking a higher dose, the dose the body needs stays more or less the same. But I think, you said that later on (talking about high dosed supplements)

Could you make a video about: you don’t need every nutrient exactly 100% every day? For me it’s easy to take a vitamin B12 and D supplement EVERY DAY but I don’t always eat a Brazil nut. Could I eat 2 instead of 1 every other day instead of every day? Same thing with Iodine and Tofu or broccoli. You would need to consume extra iodine to healthfully eat Soy or broccoli. But often I can’t organise that. So could I eat a meal with soy and forget about iodine but consume a lot of iodised salt but no soy the next day? Generally I have the problem here in Germany that the iodised salt only gives me 75% of my required iodine when I eat normal amounts of salt.

Vegans who are berating Blaire and other former vegans about the consequences of their actions are definitely in the wrong to react in such a way, but I'm not fond of the nonchalant "it's your choice" response either. Now, let me clarify, I'm not implying that it isn't someone's choice to be vegan or not nor should it be forced onto people but I think you should've reminded her on the consequences of her actions--the financial support for the cruel treatment of sentient beings who don't deserve it. The gung-ho vegans have probably only driven her away further but I do mind that the other side of the spectrum doesn't acknowledge the animal cruelty that is being supported by her reversion. This is all, of course, assuming Blaire can actually fix her diet so that she could be healthily vegan. Vegans who scrambled for answers to Blaire's health complaints were a pathetic show and should really be ashamed of reccomending someone actively harm themselves.
