    Re: Kristina no longer eating what she recommends in the book. She just uploaded "What I eat when I'm sick" where she makes a "soup" containing 3/4 cup of cashews AND 2 heaping tbsp tahini! And garlic, salt, and even onion! So clearly, very different from what she recommends in the book. Also, she calls the soup "light" even though the cashews and tahini alone are over 700 calories. And she says the salt adds extra flavor, even though in the book she says salt is "redundant" because veggies taste so salty lol

    Personally I am a vegetarian because I dont agree with many farming practices, but I dont have problem with the use of animal products if they are produced in a non wasteful manner. Also as a studying Forestry major I am more concerned about what the long term sustainable diet is and maintaining balance in our ecosystem. So if that means eating a vegan diet I'm cool with that but if people have the option to eat meat I'm cool with that as well.

    I’m a college student in an anthropology class, and know her claim that raw food is “natural” for humans is factually incorrect. When you look at human evolution, our ancestors become more and more gracile once they begin the use of fire to cook their foods. Fire results in a softer diet, which contributes to smaller teeth, smaller jaws, and different digestive tracts...all of the traits that we see in the emergence of Homo sapiens around 200kya. We literally evolved as a species dependent upon cooking food and using tools, and to say otherwise is antithetical to the entirety of known human evolution.

  • @risuhana

    @risuhana

    5 жыл бұрын

    yeah exactly! In fact, our brain evolution was only possible due to a reduction in out gut, which was only possible because we started cooking and eating higher fat and protein diets. Our intestines aren't the same as the ones of our ancestors anymore, we're not carb-burning machines. Our large intestine and our ability to cleave amylose (so starch basically) is not as good as the ones of monkeys. Our intestines can't handle that many (raw) carbs, starches, let alone fiber. It's not how this works. :'D

    @@risuhana I'm not sure where you have been educated but much of what you have said is not true. For one, our microbiota are able to break down fibre, and two our species has evolved to digest starches much better than other non-primates. Our species has evolved away from chimpanzee physiology in favour of cooked foods which are safer and more easily digestible.

  • @risuhana

    @risuhana

    5 жыл бұрын

    Molly that’s true but there’s much more behind all of that. If we would have the same digestive system as chimpanzees we would still be chimpanzees :) but we are not! We are able to digest fiber with our body’s microorganisms, yes, but the starch needs to be cleaved by enzymes which we are producing but not enough to break down if the majority of our food sources are starches. It’s limited, so the rest of the starches will pass through your colon and cause digestive issues as the microorganisms eat the rest of the starches and produce acids, gas and other products within their own digestion. And that’s uncomfortable for us, can cause digestive issues and also a weak gut barrere which can then cause the microorganisms and other things to get into our blood and do a lot of harm. Our gut is similar to the ones of our primate ancestors, yes, but it’s not the same! Our brain evolved on fat and protein, not on starches. Starches and raw carbohydrates are hard to break down and take a lot of energy in form of ATP, which is needed to give us energy. So if we keep only eating that, we need to eat a huge amount of food to give us enough energy, which isn’t practical or good for our digestion. For some people it may work, but for the majority it doesn’t. Fat is easier to use for brain evolution as it gives us more easy available energy. And protein is needed for tissue repair, muscle building and more.

  • @molly104

    @molly104

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@risuhana Hana S our bodies have physiological adaptation to be able to digest starch much better than non-human primates such as chimpanzees. Our use of fire chronologically coincides with our increase in brain size (which runs on glucose, not fats). Starch consumption probably increased dramatically around this time as cooked starches are incredibly dense sources of glucose. The human genus saw increases in copy numbers of the amylose genes which we can track back through time to show this gene expansion occurred around the same time we started using cooking around 1-2 million years ago. Amylose is an enzyme which turns cooked starch into smaller sugars, and specialised enzymes in our small intestine turn them into glucose where they are absorbed. This is much more developed than chimpanzees which did not innovate cooking. Protein and fat are important sources of nutrition, but cooking likely increased the variety of food sources humans could eat: legumes, tubers, grains. Having more copies of amylase has been shown to affect how much energy you can extract from starch, proving to be an evolutionary advantage. Your other point about starches being indigestible and causing "acids and gases" to form thanks to bacterial fermentation is actually a good thing. Starch unable to be digested is fermented by good bacteria which convert it into short chain fatty acids which have main roles such as cancer prevention, appetite regulation, insulin signalling, and helping protect against bad bacteria. Finally, starch is an excellent source of energy which is dense and easily digestible. I don't think raw diets have a place in human species nowadays since cooking has allowed us to obtain a lot of energy from starch rich foods. Our brains run on glucose, every cell in our body preferentially runs of glucose given the choice. To say we have evolved to use fat is not taking into consideration our history and physiology. It's harder to extract energy from protein, and fat burning is a less efficient process compared to straight up glucose. We have a whole organ dedicated to producing insulin, which shuttles glucose in and out of our cells. Moreover, to suggest billions of humans are actually physiologically adapted to burning fat for energy is hilarious considering starch constitutes 50+% of daily energy worldwide

    A raw diet doesn't have to rely heavily on fruits (in fact, it's even unadvisable). I was eating raw for years and during that time the only fruit I consumed everyday were apples and tomatoes. There are lots of vegetables more nutritious than fruit and that can be consumed raw (e.g., broccoli, cabbage, kale, arugula, cauliflower, spinach, chard, corn salad/mache, escarole, parsley, coriander, summer and winter squashes, cucumber, pumpkin, flaxseeds, chia seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, hazelnuts, garlic, leeks, onion, turnip, carrots, _Capsicum_ peppers).

    I don't want to sound like an asshole but Fully Raw sounds like... an eating disorder??? The obsession with getting to eat huge amounts of food is so reminiscent to me of binge eating disorder language and the preoccupation with 'zero cal' foods. I don't know how someone can look at this eating style and find it psychologically healthy. Also there's some anthropological evidence that cooking foods is what allowed human beings to develop our brains and become the dominant intelligent species we are today. Or at least this is what I learned in a physiological psychology course when discussing brain growth over our species evolution timeline. So it's funny to me that Kristina would point out that no other species cooks food when no other species has the level of intelligence that humans have.

I finally came to my senses; if I'm dreaming about bean burritos and garlicky green beans, I should probably just make them and eat them. Six months is still a long time, but I'm glad that was the end for me.

    I ate a raw food diet for years and I don't think yours was any great feat, frankly. I didn't even try that diet on purpose, I simply was cooking less and less often until I wasn't cooking at all for months in a raw. And I stopped cooking regularly because at that time I was putting on weight so not cooking meals was an easy way to eat less food, and also because of laziness since in my case cooking required more effort and time than eating all the food raw (convenience foods and other processed foods have been out of my plate since the early 1990s). Likewise, I gave up baking bread. When people like Swayze Foster claim how hard, time-consuming and expensive for them it was to stay on a raw diet I'm not sure whether they're lying through their teeth or they were doing something terribly wrong (such as living on exotic fruits, sprouting all sort of seeds or gorging on kombucha and smoothies).

    @ If you were eating this diet for weight loss, then not meeting caloric needs for a time was okay for you. For people already at a healthy weight, being on a diet that causes you to lose weight indefinitely is very unhealthy. Swayze is saying that if you want to meet the recommended caloric intake and ingest all the nutrients you need, it's very difficult and expensive on a raw food diet. The fact that you lost weight with so little effort supports her point that eating a ton of food on a raw diet will still result in lower calories ingested and shows that you probably had a very calorie-restricted diet.

  • 5 жыл бұрын

    @@monkiram: _"For people already at a healthy weight, being on a diet that causes you to lose weight indefinitely is very unhealthy."_ - I didn't say I was losing weight. In fact, for a while I even gained a few kilograms of weight on a 100% raw diet but probably not as quick as otherwise. I didn't lose any significant weight over the period I was on a 100% raw diet, I already had a similar weight before. To lose weight I had to eat less food. *Momera:* _"Swayze is saying that if you want to meet the recommended caloric intake and ingest all the nutrients you need, it's very difficult and expensive on a raw food diet."_ - As I said above, either Swayze doesn't know what she's talking about or she's lying through her teeth. And it's false that a raw diet has to be expensive. In fact, it's much cheaper than any diet heavily based on meat, fish/seafood, eggs, cheese and other dairy (i.e., the standard Western diet). Granted, a diet based on cooked potatoes, boiled rice and pasta, cooked legumes (beans, lentils, peas, chickpeas), sliced bread, onions and canned tomato would be even cheaper but also less healthy, less enjoyable and less satisfying (I find relaxing chewing tough foods, if all the foods in a meal are soft I get anxious). Living on animal products is actually quite expensive (except for perhaps cow's milk). Most people compensate that expense by complementing their animal foods with the cheapest foods available such as potatoes, bread, flour, pasta, sugar, vegetable oil and some canned or frozen vegetables. *Momera:* _"… shows that you probably had a very calorie-restricted diet."_ - The only foods I missed were cooked legumes (I'm not fond of sprouting seeds) including soy products, cooked cereals (rice, barley, oat, rye, corn), some grain-like seeds (buckwheat, quinoa), baked artichokes, summer squashes and eggplant, and baked sweet potatoes, and that's it. That's why nowadays now and then I still cook some food (usually legumes with something else) or buy some food already cooked (mostly soy milk and tofu). Instead of on 100% raw diet over the last couple of years I may have been on a 80 or 90% raw diet (what is still considered as a "raw" diet by dieticians).

    I hate the "no other animal does this so humans must be wrong" logic. Humans do almost everything that no other animal does: architecture, transportation, medicine, surgery, agriculture etc. She could not eat this way without agriculture, that human-only endeavor. Besides, I read an article once that said that cooking food was the single most important discovery in the evolution of humans, because it allowed us to get more calories and nutrients, and grow bigger and better brains.

    You’re right that argument by analogy is flawed. However you just made your own argument by analogy, which is also flawed. What does human transportation have to do with human digestion? Saying that “it might represent a problem that humans are the only animals that eat cooked food”, is a valid argument if you accept the premise that the human digestive system is probably similar to at least some animals. To disprove this idea conclusively you must prove that the human digestive system is different from all other animals in precisely the way required to benefit more from cooked foods than raw foods. I don’t know of any such proof. But I do know that the gut microbiome is very sensitive. In a world where we eat meat most of our lives and are treated routinely with antibiotics, I can totally see people having gastrointestinal distress when attempting to eat purely raw foods. But I’m not sure if that means humans are incapable of doing so in general. We may very well be under the right circumstances.

    I commented the exact same thing. I agree that she's eating cooked food and is simply building her brand as "fully raw." It's nonsense. Technically a raw food diet can be like 70% raw - there's no reason for anyone to eat 100% raw. There's certainly no reason for anyone to restrict salt. I don't believe Kristina eats the way she claims. There's not enough time in the day to chew that much food unless you're able to eat nonstop and you don't have a job or want to do anything except shop, wash, chop and chew. I do think that adding whole foods and eating up to 1 meal raw per day can be great, but 100% raw for over 1 week will cause most people's health to deteriorate.

    Everyone reacts differently to food, the high fibre, various compounds and acidity of raw veg can irritate the digestive tract of many people. The gut biome can have profound effects on how well food is absorbed and how it makes you feel, dietary changes affect the populations of bacteria that help us process food. Partly why its common for new vegans to complain about bloating, gas, irregularity. Another thing that wipes out a lot of vegans is chronic deficiencies in key nutrients, things like B12, K2 and D are too low in most vegitarians and worse in vegans due to ignorance and food philosophy. The 'all natural' fruitarians and raw vegans would have an inbuilt aversion to supplementation because its like artificial/refined and sold by pharmaceutical companies; who are evil by default. Its way worse in raw vegans because their food is so nutrient sparse and harder to digest to begin with, about the only way to fit the volume needed down is blending which can further irritate digestive problems. If you were to forgo that measure and chew it all you would ruin your teeth very quickly. Finally many raw vegans being highly ideological could be intolerant to the plants they eat but continue to eat them out of faith and denial of the effects. There are many ways a diet can leave you with serious problems.

There are actually a lot of foods that we all normally cook, that can still be eaten "raw", it's just that they are sprouted and soaked. Even beans dont need to be cooked, you can just soak them for a few days. I cook my stuff, but just an fyi for anyone interested.

    Hi guys, I am a final year medical student: please keep in mind that this bulimic girl almost definitely was inducing vomiting when this happened. Vomiting greatly increases the pressure in the stomach and esophagus; stretching the stomach just by eating too much would NOT cause a rupture. It's also incredibly rare for vomiting to cause the stomach to rupture. There are many cases of bulimics and alcoholics developing esophageal tears (called Mallory-Weiss tears) from *recurrent* and *frequent* episodes of vomiting. These are tears to the surface of the esophagus and not a full rupture. Much less common is Boerhaave syndrome which is a rupture of the esophagus and has the same causes as Mallory-Weiss tears (frequent vomiting). Again, this is very rare. Neither of these conditions would result from vomiting once or twice due to illness, so don't be worried. You only need to be worried if you induce vomiting frequently or are an alcoholic who vomits frequently.

    Once youre used the lifestyle your body wont bloat so much! I used to bloat big time and couldnt eat enough since i wasnt used to such fiber rich raw food, but its gotten better in time. Now cooked foods are to blame when i bloat since im not used to added salts and such lol. Fruits and veggies aren't to blame-- if you bloat a lot its just a sign that your body is chronically dehydrated (most people are and i mean no offense when i say that. Fruits hydrate even more than plain water bc the simple sugars and vitamins help with absorption so once you become hydrated enough, the bloating will become less and less of an occurrence)

    Mister Sarcastic, I just read the article you posted a link to and it is filled with a lot of misinformation. I am a medical student, and though this website appears to be run by a doctor, to say that she is heavily cherry picking of research would be a huge understatement. She discounts the large volumes of research that show diets with more vegetables are healthier and that red meat contributes to disease on the grounds that dietary research as a whole is lacking, but then goes on to give no evidence for her own theory that more meat and less vegetables is healthy. You will be very very hard-pressed to find a doctor that will tell you that vegetables are unhealthy and this lady appears to be very much in the minority. A lot of the theory behind what she says is true, but the conclusions she comes to are completely and wildly far-fetched as well as her interpretation and explanation of the literature.

    Are you aware that most of the rice sold in the market is highly "polluted" with arsenic? No wonder it's so cheap. BTW, corn is actually much more productive and affordable to grow (and not so polluted). That's why corn is the main staple in numerous African countries (unlike rice). The main reason people grow and consume rice instead of corn is because they like it better or they're just used to eat rice.

    Right? My chili is very hearty. I eat maybe 1 cup in a sitting (including the beans on the side) and with it a piece of garlic bread. And that fills me up for hours 😂

    Can I just say I’m not a vegan (dabbled a bit with it in the past but went back to animal products since we raise our own animals in our backyard) but I absolutely adore your channel. You have such great common sense in a world of crazy diets - even in the non-vegan health realm there are so many fad diets and unfounded claims - so it’s incredibly refreshing to hear your logical reasoning. Thanks for taking the time to put these videos out!

    just subbed. This is the only food blogger that actually seems to understand that economics is a thing and that "affordable" actually means affordable, not fifty or a hundred of dollars per day.

    Hello! I’m a somewhat new subscriber working on slowly transitioning to a vegan diet. I’ve been loving your very honest content!! You mentioned books that may not necessarily be new but have a ton of great info on them. Could you do a video on those or a “realistic tips or info you should know to successfully switch to a vegan diet (and make it last)” Thanks! ♥️♥️♥️

    Most of the time Kristina makes me feel like I’m reading a high school students essay. Especially that appendix on raw science was the icing on the cake (or should I say, the nicing). You’re really going to disregard millions of years of scientific evidence and call it a “cooked-food perspective”? Please get in touch with reality asap. Anyways, I’ve really been enjoying your content in the past few weeks Swayze. Thanks for calling these people out on their bullshit.

    I had maxillofacial jaw surgery back in 2009. Since then I've had a hard time chewing tough foods like carrots, almonds, kale, celery, etc. It either becomes very painful or my jaw just locks up completely. I've mentioned this to raw vegan influencers for advice and they all told me the same things. "Stick to smoothies and juices!" So essentially I'd just be consuming a baby food diet. Yeah, no thanks. Potatoes, rice, beans and cooked veggies have never done me any harm. By the way, you look gorgeous in this video.

    Where I live in Europe you cannot buy fruits and vegetables in bulk (or in a case) because we have just regular supermarkets where you are supposed to buy "normal" amounts of stuff for a household. Different story for companies. It's not like in the US where everybody can buy tons of food in a supermarket;)

    Raw cruciferous vegetables are goitrogenic. A typical size raw kale salad a couple of times a week probably won’t hurt you but eating a huge salad as she suggests every day might really mess up thyroid function, especially if dietary iodine is already low. As someone who has hypothyroidism I can tell you it’s no joke.

    I could never do raw--I would very quickly miss eating warm food!

  • 5 жыл бұрын

    Dieticians and researchers refer to a diet as raw when >75% by weight of the consumed food is uncooked (i.e., not exposed to temperatures >118ºF/48ºC). So it's perfectly compatible to follow a raw diet and consume some warm foods and drinks. Granted, Swayze won't inform you about that. Medhavi Sandhani a majority of them had gut issues before going vegan and hoped veganism (usually high raw and high fruit) would solve their problems, but it was just a temporary fix to a long-term problem.
