Maid of Milk That is fantastic for the certain % of people who get those free plans, but I am sure there are criteria that has to be met, as well as a certain amount they can give... meaning regardless of them giving 1000 plans away to students , there are still thousands of people who will not receive the help thus not being able to afford it. Assuming that because a company offers a free plan to a few people means that anyone who needs one will get it is silly.

Telling low-income households to shop vegan by using Thrive Market is the 2019 equivalent of “Let them eat cake!” 😑

Martina Thompson Not to sound rude or attacking but It’s absolutely not cheaper and that’s only assuming people have a delivery address or internet access. Not to mention people rely on food stamps. Something online retailers can’t accept. We’re so connected with the rest of the world, it’s almost impossible to fathom that a digital divide exists but it does and it’s not just in third world countries, it’s in our own neighborhood and right under our noses. If online shopping was so cheap and accessible, it would be a no brainer to switch from traditional shopping. There’s a reason why low income households rely on cheap, convenient processed foods and it’s not because it tastes better than a gourmet meal. I don’t mean to sound like I’m attacking, just trying to cover and emphasize all my points.

I just googled Thrive Market and LOL: An annual membership costs $59.95 (or, $5/month), and 85% of orders ship within two days or less. If you spend over $49, shipping is always free. Thrive Market currently ships to all contiguous US states. BRUH you gotta pay for the privilege of still forking over cash to BUY this stuff!! You even have to STILL pay the shipping if your order is less than 50$. Yeah, that'll keep a single income family's head above water lol.

I lived on rice and beans and dumpster dived eggs for almost a year when I was at my poorest. I could find eggs nightly cause the stores had to get rid of the whole carton if one egg was broken. I once found an entire case of olive oil, cause one bottle was broken. The good imported stuff. That might have been the best day of my life. I mean I'm in a much better financial position now, and over all much happier. But the pure joy of finding all that nice oil was quite a moment...

It's not just the US. I used to work in a whole foods type place in England and every day we had to throw away so much food that was still good to eat and we weren't even allowed to keep it for ourselves 🤦🏻‍♀️

That's so true. Especially in rural areas where there are giant gaps between public transportation. Walking 10 or 15 miles with groceries is rough. Little kids can't tag along. It's all limiting. Having a specialized diet while poor is hard period.

Or when you’re so rural the closer bus stop is 25 miles away, and you have another 10 to work, and you need a cab to realistically get to that bus stop, and the cab is $40 one way.... Sorry...just having flashbacks to when I didn’t have a car for nearly 2 years. Basically my whole paycheck went to the rude ass cab company to get myself to work every day.

That's because gas is so ridiculously cheap in the US. In Europe, public transport is almost always the cheaper option, because a gallon of gas costs about 6$. Also distances between locations are usually shorter because Europe is more densely populated. What I'm trying to say is: I don't have a car and the only time I miss it is when I go to IKEA.

Chiquita banana I have tried many times. Every time I enter my address that includes a P.O. box, I get a message that they still do not deliver to P.O. boxes. I’ve contacted them asking when they will finally work it out, and they always say “we’re working on it,” but I haven’t seen any results in approx ~2 years. And, not only do I live in low-income housing, but all low-income housing and projects in my city and throughout the South have P.O. boxes. Might be a generalization overall, but from what I’ve seen it’s the reality of it all.

She also isn't taking into consideration places like Alaska where fresh produce can be 10x the price of most place in the us and it is lower quality because it has to travel long distances jus to get to any store that would sell fresh produce

nox5555 thats an investment, the issue here is the fact that being vegan isn’t always affordable. Spending money on a farming set up is not a feasible option for most people living in poverty or even middle class people who are barely scraping together a savings account. Poverty and food deserts aren’t really issues that can be solved with the whole grow your own produce argument. Besides most people don’t know enough about agriculture to do this and don’t necessarily have the time to learn it.

Yomiko Readman I know for real! I think they imagine that somehow humans can be in a post-starvation world. But humans have treated salt as vital because it IS. It’s very odd. Even every culture has their own oil. Oil, sesame, fish, lard, etc. People would have starved without them, we will never not need them.

I don't know why people can't accept that it's not possible for everyone to eat/buy certain foods.

Since you seem to have a much better head on your shoulders and recognize what struggles various people may have, would YOU be willing to do a video on eating vegan while financially struggling? You had some good tips in this video but it'd be interested in hearing you talk about it some more.

When I was in a serious financial bind, I ate mainly rice, beans (different varieties), frozen veggies, canned veggies, pasta (not vegan, but at least vegetarian), kale (99¢/lb), potatoes and other cheap/sale fruits/veggies. Clearance and manager specials are your bff. I also ate eggs just cause I needed B vitamins and eggs were cheaper than supplements (obviously not ideal but you also gotta be realistic and care for yourself; my vegan friend at the time developed scary neurological symptoms from B deficiency because she wasn't taking supplements) Other tips: go for foods high in fiber as they will fill you up faster!! Some of my favs are apples, oranges (can be a little more pricey), bran cereal, oatmeal, and pickles. Also important to have lots of easy snacks because you should be eating throughout the day. I had a lot of apples + peanut butter (you can often get cheap, store brand pb that JUST has peanuts!) Other snacks I loved were frozen berries heated in the microwave and baked apples w/cinnamon (again, a few spices are worth investing in!) It's also important to go for foods that will store for a while and won't spoil fast (frozen, canned, potatoes, apples....). I honestly need to get back to eating like this more so I can save money and get in shape again 😂

I bused to the grocery store for years and it was a giant pain in the ass (and also the back and shoulders, since I used a backpack to lug my groceries). I'm super thankful that I currently live like 4 blocks from a Kroger. I have the option to go more often so I don't have to carry 50 lbs of groceries at a time.

Christina I was obviously talking about her privilege in veganism. I’m pro choice and don’t agree with telling others what to do with their bodies. Two very different things.

I grew up in a food desert in bumfuck nowhere Minnesota. The closest grocery was easily a half hour away if all lights are green and there’s no traffic (which never happens on the paved county roads lmao). If I can’t afford gas to go get groceries I CERTAINLY can not afford a delivery service for said groceries. Your perspective on veganism is very refreshing to say the least. I didn’t know what a whole foods was practically my whole childhood. Now that I go to university in a city, plenty of my peers who are vegetarian or vegan look down on me for growing up the way I did, in a low income area quite literally hunting for food. Thank you for this video. It’s easier for me to grasp that not all vegans are entitled, condescending people after viewing your channel. EDIT: I just realised how offensive this woman was equating the south or the Midwest with poverty. Yes it is true that we have plenty of impoverished areas but there’s also plenty of hella wealthy areas. Like I lived near Funkley, one of the smallest towns in the United States with a whopping population of five. Not a lot of income flowing through here. Then there’s suburbs such as Plymouth and Medina that have some of the highest median incomes in the Midwest. How somebody can be so ignorant I have no clue.

Wtf? This is so offensively privileged. People get stuck in food deserts because they can’t afford to conveniently travel outside of their immediate area to shop at better prices. It’s also so frustrating that fresh produce is so expensive. People on a tight budget eat more processed stuff because it’s way cheaper.

Exactly. Part of what makes living in one so tough is that most residents can't afford the gas for a 45+ minute drive to a better grocery store. If you can't afford that, you probably can't afford a subscription to Thrive.

Not only this, but processed foods last longer. Canned, preserved, easily stored away, good for freezing, and can be stretched out across many meals for several months. Fresh products perish quickly and they need to be processed before it can be preserved. Low income and financially unstable people don’t have the luxury nor the buffer. Perished foods is money gone up in flames, and processed food can be easily assembled into a decent meal. It may not be nutritionally complex, but it fulfills caloric needs, which is a priority when starvation constantly looms over your life.

As a war refugee who lived in poverty for years and now a privileged middle class vegan...thank you! The vegan community can be so incredibly ignorant. I love how informed, open, and honest you are. Love your channel!

So true. Honestly, just cutting back on animal products is a great thing to do. Even if people don't have the resources to be completely vegan, forgoing meat even a few days a week has a huge impact. Doing any good you can is still good ❤️

Anyone making a video about affordable, accessible vegan or vegetarian foods and doesn't start with beans and rice, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or pasta and sauce is kind of twit.

You should check out The Happy Herbivore. I’m not sure how much her meal plans are now but as long as I had time to prep and cook, all the meals were highly affordable and my grocery bill was low. I’m talking like $30-40 a week for ALL my meals. Unless I had to re-stock too many spices. Those can be expensive sometimes.

Amen!! But I’m a diabetic too so low carbs and no meat has been quite hard to do budget wise. So we do lots of beans and wild rice and nut butters and nut milks I make, but we are still struggling to go full vegan because of where we live and our budget. We have to plan around what meds I’m gonna miss refilling every two weeks till our next Friday paychecks or what bills we can juggle... It’s kinda like... buy diabetic meds or pay bills almost every week at our house It’s just a laugh riot 😖

It always shocks me when Americans say broccoli is so expensive. It’s literally one of the cheapest and most common vegetables in the UK

Same here in Germany. I'm so shocked when I hear about the prices of fruit and vegetables in the US (I mean, of course fruit is more expensive here too but the mentioned prices in the US are fricking crazy from my point of view). And our public transport system is better as well (not perfect! If you live in small villages it is still really hard bc often you only have two busses a day driving to a (small) town nearby and two driving back) so overall it is way more doable here from what I've experienced.

It depends on where you live in the US. It's one of the cheapest vegetables where I live, because it's so common in my area. We also don't have such expensive bell peppers, but it really does depend on the region you live in, because the US is so varied in access to food

It’s not just a vegan thing. I come across a lot of people who don’t understand poverty. I am practically at poverty level, even though I live with family, I work part time minimum wage and just about exist on stretching each paycheck. I have to stretch each dollar so paying $6 for a customized Crunchwrap at Taco Bell today was a splurge.

Thank you for this. I am a disabled widow who lives alone. I don’t have kids . I can’t drive. My entire income is $671 a month, no food stamps and no prescription coverage. I am a type 2 diabetic as well. In other words I survive way below the poverty line. I am not vegan but I love collecting recipes and learning about different lifestyles. I was vegetarian for 5 1/2 years, but no longer. I do absolutely love my vegetables and have 2-3 meatless days a week. My biggest splurge is getting the small box from Misfits Market every 2 weeks. Please do more videos about eating well on a very small budget. I really appreciate all your videos!

1. Promote better/more plant-based options at the convenience stores and fast food restaurants. 2. Buy cheap and long lasting staple goods to base your meals around when grocery stores are available. (Rice, oats, beans, canned/frozen vegetables etc.) 3. Understand that some people can't/won't be able to go 100% vegan, but that doing the most you can is okay! Giving people grace and supporting good changes is the best way to promote veganism. (Also, WIC and SNAP have a lot of vegan options, so teaching people how to use their budget/food stamps wisely is really important for the health of their families )

She can't relate. She's not poor. The sad part is she thinks she helping people!

I think it's vulgar to speak of the finances of a private citizen, so poor, saving up, rich but wanting more - whatever - I wasn't implying any of these (I also haven't taken a look at her finances), which I realized would be an issue when I hit send. I only meant to say that maybe she has some kind of understanding of not having everything she wants - she's not a delusional heiress in her own universe. Her actions show a genuine empathy for others in general and a specific care to teach (her former profession) and she possibly does have a very recent understanding when it comes to not having everything at her disposal and mostly, whatever she knows from hard work, saving up, recently and throughout her life, she simply had the intention to spread veganism to people who probably tell her it's too difficult where they live, for whatever reason, so she wants to help them and her audience. I wasn't completely disputing the original comment; I was only adding one bit of information. She can relate (as someone who didn't think she can be a vegan, thought it was a diet which she went on and off of many times). She's not extremely wealthy (she might have had to cut corners on food choices while also moving back home with her husband in order to get a small bungalow to live in, which she loves). The great part is that she genuinely wants to help people - and if it's those people who think being vegan means consuming the expensive processed food, substitutions for what they're used to, then she'll find it if she must - did she pay for it this time to help them get started? - or maybe she would have helped them with a homemade recipe alternative if it would come to that, but she herself eats rather simply, seasonally, locally. Maybe if she'd gone somewhere in which rice, beans, potatoes, fresh food in season was wanted, and she'd teach some different recipes, show how veganism can be simple, healthy, inexpensive, then people would be happier - even Swayze who somehow manages to eat mock meat, different plant milks, vegan desserts - maybe it goes into the cost of videos, sometimes, and maybe Hannah's trip did, too. Do you think Greta Thurnberg is a privileged vegan who can skip school any time she wants in order to drone on about climate change when other children have to eat dead animals from fast food restaurants and attend school? Sometimes, people seem to be so separate, so far away, on some external matter or how things go as they do their thing, but we're so similar, we're all trying something all the time. Maybe the people who asked for Hannah's help should have been questioned. Maybe the lawmakers Greta is trying to wake up, or at least the audience members at her speeches, should be questioned. I like when people try to help people in need of help. Hannah didn't leave the house one day, decide to make someone vegan, and say "Veganism is non dairy Ben and Jerry's." She was asked for guidance and probably helped people's specific reason for wanting to be vegan along with what might be stopping people from being vegan. In another scenario it could have been helping someone plant a backyard or community garden or join a food co-op or get monthly deliveries of less expensive produce that would otherwise go to waste. It is a privilege to be able to help others and a privilege to be helped when that help is wanted/needed. So I think both parties of this coming together have been blessed.

In order to be effective with this "vegan on a budget" series she should really do it on a food stamp budget.

We ate vegan a lot growing up poor..because meat is expensive. But it was rice, beans, potatoes, and pasta. Very little in the way of veggies or fruit much less fake meat.

She’s the kind of person that prices black people out of their homes, because she wants to live in the arts district for the “urban experience”.

Thank YOU!! Strawberries, lots of berries are all expensive. It's a treat to be able to get them on sale. Produce really has become expensive. I usually get just bananas and one other fruit that's on sale...this week I got peaches. Vitamix, I know I will not ever afford.

exactly! In the Netherlands, a lot of berries are up to 3 euros for a very small container. It's much less affordable than bananas or a net of tangerines

Berries are always an issue as they cost a lot and tend to perish the quickest. If you have a freezer, frozen berries tend to be the most economical way to have them.

Or, in my opinion, people w/a family to feed. I enjoy Gardein and other substitute meat products, but don't know how much I could afford if I were feeding 4-6 people. I'm one person with a good income and sometimes I have to think twice before buying some of this stuff. It's very easy to say 'do this' when you can't put yourself in another's shoes.

My community is currently protesting a 11th dollar store opening, after losing a grocery store about a year ago. We have like 3 dollar stores in one street, literally one store apart. Creating food deserts, and we don't need to replace our remaining grocery stores with online markets, when a lot of people in my neighborhood don't have a computer in their households. She needs to actually look into the food desert issue.

When I was 18 and homeless in NY, I had to go back to eating animal products because at one of youth group homes I stayed at (and later got kicked out of for me and my friend sneaking in margaritas and sleeping in too often lol) but at that youth group home, they neglected to cook us food sometimes. They would put a hotdog on bread and call that lunch. That is so restrictive but imagine if I was still vegan then? I’d starve more than I already was starving. But me and my friend stole a lot in Times Square. Mostly margaritas from CVS lol

I was homeless for over a decade and "poor" after that for many years. You can still get by own your own. And if you really needed help, there's the government and food pantries and I worked for one of them and volunteered for the other. 😅

I grew up in a food desert, and we couldn't afford shit like Thrive. $9 bought us chicken and ground beef my mom would ration for two weeks, and we got veggies from family friends who worked in the fields. Hannah doesn't know what it's like to struggle and make every penny stretch.

M yes there absolutely is. The only reason humans have survived this long is because we were gatherers AND hunters. And we’ve not yet made our worldwide food distribution good enough to allow everyone to eat vegan. Not everyone has access to inexpensive vegan food, and many people have to pay an arm and a leg to fresh produce.

So glad someone said this. I live in Appalachia, a massive food desert. We have poverty, drug problems, education disparities, and a wealth of low income families. Many live in rural communities and can barely make ends meet. Thrive market maybe works on a California budget but not on a West Virginia budget.

@Jessie Jay I'm a native of California (SF, and my husband's from Santa Barbara), and have also lived in some not-so-affluent areas on the East Coast. It's absolutely easier to afford Thrive in California, where even the lesser-well-off people tend to have more than the typical person who is poor on the east coast, and now own a large home in Washington State. We left the state when we were priced out of the good areas, and there's no way I'd go live in Modesto or Winton or some other shitty place like those. That over-$225k thing? Applies a lot more places than you think. It sounds to me like you're trying to make this a who-can-least-afford-it Olympics. You need to get outside of your bubble. Something else I seriously doubt you've thought about is how the cost of food is already so much more in California than the east coast that you don't need to come up with as much extra to get Thrive. You've already got most of the cost of Thrive in your current food budget.

I remember I went vegan in my freshman year of high school. We were REALLY poor and I developed a really bad eating disorder. Anyway, I only had one serving of rolled oats left. I put cayenne instead of cinnamon on accident and I think I cried for a full hour. It was the only food I had and I used the rest of my almond milk. Videos like her’s make me rage inside.

I never realised this but being vegetarian/ vegan in India is relatively so much easier... fresh produce is not terribly expensive, spices are cheap and accessible, rice is a staple as are beans. Nut milk is expensive so people go with cow or buffalo milk (hence I said vegetarian and not only vegan) meat in most families would be a luxury and almost no one eats meat every single day. lentil is a common and staple and an affordable source of protein. A dish of rice and kidney beans (Rajma chawal) is quite popular in North India and is very flavourful. canned, frozen and bottled stuff are so much more expensive! those are in the luxury category

Exactly!! I live in Pakistan, and while we do have meat more often, it's still not that expensive, like a packet of chicken breast for 4 people is like ..250 rupees? Like a bit over a dollar, and people forget that almost every vegan I have seen on youtube takes vegan supplements which are super super expensive where I live and sometimes they don't have any, ( if they do then it's at like one foreign goods store in the whole city and 5x the foreign price), rice is also a staple but still not the cheapest where I live :(( I can say that if you have the money then in Pakistan you can definitely go vegan, but majority of us are middle class and eat the basics of like eggs in the morning, rice and Dahl or qeema for lunch and dinner is usually another rice, vegetable and meat dish. Its just not sustainable or affordable:(( but yes!! The price of fruits and veg abroad shocks me sometimes, it's so expensive. The only expensive fruit and veg here is the imported varieties of the locally grown veg, and berries! Omg it's been years since I had raspberries or blueberries cause they're so expensive, and buying vegan or veggie frozen food is unheard of because either it doesnt exist here or is really expensive

I found an Asian Market in Auckland that sold hass Avocados, 2 for $2.99 and I was so glad! When I first arrived, avos were $5 - $8 each. I really had to stop myself for a moment and realise that 2 for $2.99 still isn't cheap.

I lived in Hawaii for a couple of years. Nearly EVERYTHING was at least 2-3x as expensive as the continental US. People just don't understand the concept of lots of hungry people+little farmable land+highly specific climate and soil characteristics=lots of importing=a heck of a lot more $ for even the "cheap" foods. Just because it is Summer all year long doesn't mean we grow everything most people consume frequently on islands all year round. The exception was coffee, but only because they had historical areas dedicated to it on the mainland and they could sell it for a ridiculously high price in California.

Wait I'm also just realizing that every one of these meals is dependent on the person just having their lives paid for, this is NOT something that a person with a full time job has time to make

also, shoutout to my junk food vegans who live off mock-meats, coffee and peanut butter. somehow WE are the ones staying vegan long-term ... huh, interesting.

It's just a proof that veganism is a system of beliefs, which is related to industrialism. It's just impossible to survive on raw plants long-term, so the answer is impossible burger provided by the same Big Food Industry that provide junk food, and made by the same recipe as junk food is made.

Thank you for pointing out the price of that vitamix appliance. I see a lot of vegans do vegan on a budget series then use their $500+ appliance to make their recipes. It's very misguided to assume people eating on a budget can have these luxury appliances.

Vitamixes are not even necessary. I am a long term vegan. I've never had one. Food processor, rice cooker, blender and pressure cooker but not a Vitamix.

I consider myself very privileged and I earn good money, but even I can’t justify spending that sort of money on a Vitamix. I make do with a blender/smoothie maker that I got on Freecycle years ago, a small food processor and a stick blender (both years old now). It might be a bit more hassle and you might have a few lumps, but hundreds of dollars/pounds on a Vitamix is just ridiculous. It would be refreshing to see more recipes with just a regular blender.

Vanessa, we are a vegan fam of SIX and we def could never afford a Vitamix! We were lucky enough to be gifted with one for Xmas a couple years ago.

So many middle-class/lower middle-class people act like they know what poverty is. Struggling with money is so much different than true poverty.

Being middle class, no I'm not "poor" because before taxes I technically make too much to get government assistance, but my paycheck gets taxed to all hell ($400 is taken out for every $1000 I make). So after taxes, my income is nowhere near livable. So yes. I know what poverty is, and it fucking sucks.

I lived in Nunavut (Northern Canada) when I was little and the people there can’t grow any produce because it’s so cold. They do get some shipped in from down south, but it’s 100$ for one watermelon. They rely on meat from seals, fish, and beluga whales and they have for thousands of years. When white vegans say “just go to X store” when they don’t even have hospitals in most places up north, it speaks volumes. Also, Inuit do not club baby seals. That was made up 100 years or so ago as racist propaganda. Babies wouldn’t feed your family, and they mostly hunt with harpoons.

Thank you for mentioning disabilities. As a legally blind person, I can't deny that it affects everything in my life, including reductionism. (I'm a vegetarian/mostly vegan).

@@catkin-z8g I am aware I do have privelege. However I'm not vegan. I'm not even vegetarian. I am merely stating my experience with buying and storing produce. I find it cheaper because luckily I can afford to pay for my daily bills and afford to hire for maintenance when there's a temporary power outage. I'd also like to mention that eventually fresh produce will need refrigeration too (which I'm glad I have).

She's passionate, but her passion is actually previledge. Someone asked on Facebook the other day: Can someone on a low income/homeless who doesn't go to a soup kitchen often go vegan? That's what she should be addressing

The soup kitchen in my town was completely vegan.

I think something that helped me when I went vegan to not fall into all the fads is that I am Colombian and generally grew up eating rice and beans! Which is also how I was able to eat on a budget. Having "beyond meat" or the fake cheeses and foods is extremely expensive.. THANKS FOR TALKING ABOUT PRIVILEGE!

Why continue doing harmful things when you know full well that they are no good? You have the choice of either polluting the environment "just a bit" (read: quite a ton, but not that many tons) , and half ass everything for comfort, or completely rid your life of destructive habits.

Yea I think this struck me the most, she's acting like she's out in the middle of nowhere but then when she actually said what city she was in I was like, wait what?

I'm a college student so watching her talk about how easy it is is like...painful. I can't even afford a tub of Ben and Jerry's, I make minimum wage. Also, even though I have a meal plan (required if you live on campus at my school) my school has terrible (almost no) vegan/vegetarian options. So I appreciate the points you bring up, because a lot of us don't really have the option, despite wanting to. Also, I would love a dollar store vegan guide!

2 months later, Hannah still hasn’t apologized. She made a bunch of videos (some with her sister Ellen Fisher) talking about how she is better than “people making gossip videos about other KZreadrs” and how she “grew up”. Her “don’t talk about it and people will forget” method is definitely working.

I struggled with veganism when I lived below the poverty line a couple years ago. "Cheap vegan meal" videos often made me feel powerless because they were so out of touch with what I could afford.

You can tweak them. Remember on KZread everyone is trying to be interesting and exciting. It doesn't mean you need to eat that way. Fortunately for me, I like boring and mundane. A few herbs and spices, whatever green vegetables are cheap , rice and beans. Done ;)

Caitlin Shoemaker on KZread makes videos on vegan budget meals. She did a whole series on eating vegan on 1.50$ a day. I really respect what she does because she gets rid of all of her fancy equipment too for these recipes because she makes a point of saying there's no way someone living below the poverty line will have a 300$ blender.

But just ask for a vitamix for your birthday. Yeah coz everyone gets whatever they want for their birthday 🙄.

"Be vegan its easy guys" proceed to waste what will be my fulm living budget of a month in one video.

Honestly watching this I felt a weight settling in my chest for all of the food and greens that I have waisted (not getting to it at the end of the week) and taken for granted. Thank you for the wake up call on the privilege I live in.

If Swayze was willing to make a budget vegan video (or more than one) I think it'd be very helpful. Because if someone really wants to go vegan and follows some of these other videos, they're just going to be hungry and decide veganism isn't sustainable.

In the midst of an ED and going vegan is absolutely not an option for me, it only encourages the restrictive attitude towards food but people like this would tell you that this doesn’t matter, I’ve seen people say it before so this attitude towards veganism is so toxic for those who literally can’t be vegan

south bend is a college town so yeah not very “rural” at all

So, I've been watching this channel for about a month, even though I'm not vegan, because I've wondered about it and appreciate her SCIENCE-based approach to many different topics, not just veganism. Now, my 13-year-old daughter is thinking about trying veganism, so we are going to have a vegan day this Sunday. I hope to get to the point where I eat vegan 2-3 days per week, as I know my husband won't switch. So, yay to Unnatural Vegan for making this endeavor seem not so hard!

That's awesome!!!! I'm working towards being vegetarian again myself, and I just made the best vegan paella dish tonight. It was so flavorful and easy, and I completely forgot it was vegan 😂 You can sub lots of ingredients to suit your needs. (The recipe I used called for saffron and artichoke but I used turmeric and green olives/capers instead)

thank you!! I'm disabled, without a car, and in a relatively small town in Texas, and it's still the biggest town for 150~ miles to the nearest metro area. I supplement my income with online transcription, which also finances my internet access that I need to do that job (AT&T broadband is relatively cheap but boy oh boy does it die a lot) and mostly? I'm depending on being able to get a ride to the food bank every couple of months to eat. some months it gets pretty rough in between those trips. I'm not in a position where I can throw out or give away any food, though I don't buy any nonvegan food with my money. that's not a strong line to draw, I know, but it's what I've got. I do have advantages that many don't have still, but this comment is already long enough. if I do start to get out of this hole that I'm in income and lifestyle wise, I would like to know ways to do so that coincide with my ethics, but I'm likely never going to be in a shopping-at-Whole-Foods position in life. one thing I can say is... if you get a good produce haul, be it through a freak sale or like me through a community garden... if you can take the time out to chop everything up in one or a few goes and freeze it, either in batches on a cookie sheet or in a muffin tin before transferring it to freezer bags? you will save a lot of produce from going bad, and yourself from a lot of "I'm too tired/low-motivation for a complex dish" compulsive junk meals or just not eating. things like a handful of frozen strawberries or a precooked frozen muffin-tin-scoop of apple pie filling in my quick oats pot, a handful of chopped frozen onions and peppers thrown in a pan ahead of something quick, makes a big difference in quality of life. you can freeze bread. halfway cooking sliced potatoes and freezing them, you can throw them in a pan with a dab of oil and have a pretty good base for dinner. I'm thrifty enough that if I open a can and don't use more than half of it, I'll drain and freeze that on a cookie sheet too, but I'm really averse to food waste.

Mine was a gift because the freakin flap over the pour spout was broken. It doesn’t affect it working but they were my bf’a parents and they would rather have a new one than a functional slightly damaged one.

Budget for a Vitamix. I got a smaller model for 300. It is worth every penny. I use it every day. I am poor. I work for a Walmart I eat healthier now because I can blend up food I wouldn't otherwise eat. It reduces food waste and saves time on food prep. You can just throw things in there.

I’m glad you made this. I normally love Hannah’s videos, but I was really upset when she claimed that literally anyone could be vegan even in a food desert.

I know this comment is old, but I just moved from Oregon to Florida and our avocados were normally ~$1 each (I think because of being close California), but here they’re often 66 cents at most grocery stores, 88 cents for the big ones, not on sale! 👀 I feel so spoiled and excited being able to eat half of one almost every day 😭

Sort of depends in the UK at least. Morrisons have wonky avocados where you can get a decent amount for £2.50. Otherwise they can be anywhere between £1 to £1.75 each.

perhaps the most frustrating thing these people forget besides the obvious is that some people, due to their poverty, are stuck living with their families well into adulthood in order to support each other (hi) -- and just because they are vegan/want to be vegan does not mean their family is, so even if they have potential resources nearby, they likely STILL can't afford to use their money on it because no one in their house is gonna eat vegan meats and whatnot, thus wasting money, resources - and food if they bought enough for more than them to eat and no one shared it. this is and has remained my struggle and i wish more than anything i could change that (i live in the chicagoland area, i have more options than the RURAL midwest) but i tried so many times and until i live on my own it's just not feasible for the shared grocery funds. all i can do is REDUCE the amount of animal products i must use, which i think i do quite well on with the cards i'm dealt. this girl is privileged and ignorant.

i also watch Madeline Olivia, she's uk based, but she made several videos on affordable vegan food, i think £1.5 per meal, she shows the shopping and then the cooking. she's not spending on fancy things in these videos nor i general, i find her videos honest and relatable.

@@crazyXXXcatXXX what I've discovered is that a *lot* of things in B&M etc are accidentally vegan and I'm fortunate enough to be in Manchester so I can get to the Chinese supermarkets on public transport for very little money. I also learnt to make my own soy milk and tofu via Mary's Test Kitchen which has been a lifesaver.

ik this is old but i just found this video. being vegan and poor is fucking hard. so many vegans will say that theres no reason not to be vegan because there is a plant based replacement for everything. meanwhile im a pound of fucking cashews away from not paying rent lmao

i think some people confuse struggling financially with not being able to just buy whatever you want. i have heard people saying that they're struggling financially but they could pay all their bills, keep up a car for a whole month, put food on the table, and have some money after paying for all the necessary things, they just couldn't afford, you know, shopping at luxury stores for clothes, get the newest gadgets or going on tropical vacations. if you can't afford the newest iPhone, no you're not struggling financially. if you can barely afford food and pay your bills, then yes you are struggling financially.

Thank you for saying this. Most of my childhood/teenage years we were dirt poor, I grew up eating expired foods and wearing clothes discarded by my much older cousins. To this day I get annoyed when my friends say they were poor too, yet brag about their childhood bikes, and trips, and actual gifts for the holidays... Due to recent unexpected circumstances, I am currently in a similar situation again (only for the next 3 months, thankfully), where I need to be very careful with every pound I spend, so even things like shampoo need to be planned into the budget. And I don't even have a section for days out or anything. We are talking bare necessities only. It is incredibly hard, definitely nothing like the perceived 'lack' I too got so used to proclaiming in my recent years (not being able to buy random crap I want to buy). I have newfound respect for my mother and the kind of borderline magic sh!t she had to pull sometimes, just to put food on the table for us.

@@r.n.4765 thanks for the comment and i hope things get better soon. there's a difference between not being able to afford what you want and what you actually need (basic necessities), like you mentioned the shampoo. i think it's very insensitive towards people who are actually struggling to get by when others complain about not being able to buy things they don't need, they just want, because it's pretty, convenient, etc. Like do i want a blush pink velvet chair that costs $700? yes because it's pretty. do i need it? no i can sit on my regular chair. am i struggling financially because i can't buy it? no. I'm fortunate to have a decent paying job that's enables me to live comfortably without luxury items. and that's not something so many people can say. influencers forget or don't know the harsh reality so many face.

Thanks for making this video, I'm a venezuelan living in Colombia. I would love to see her in our position. In the venezuelan economic crisis it's impossible to choose what to eat, you just have to eat what you can find. Somedays you find eggs, other days milk, sometimes corn flour, sometimes -some- fruits, -some- vegetables. People are starving and there are NO vegan products. Meantime in Colombia, I do what I can with my budget, there are some vegan products but they are very expensive. 1L of almond milk is 4$, almond butter is 10$, 500 grs of tofu is 4$, there is NO maple syrup, NO nutritional yeast, NO seitan nor tempeh, almost no vegan junk food, vegan protein powders are very very very expensive. And yes, I have cravings, I cannot live by eating rice, beans and vegetables. And the thing youtubers of the first world forget, is that we don't earn the same salaries in our countries. So they should be aware.

That’s not very fair, being siblings doesn’t always equate to both sharing the same delusions or beliefs... I guess in this instance they do but not all siblings are alike.

I'm a student in Germany but still would consider myself privileged about food BUT I WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO BUY CASHEWS maybe on special occasions but honestly it's not worth it to spent 6€+ on a sauce

@Cindy Wallis Unnatural Vegan isnt even marketung mock meats as affordable. She even admits that vegan alternatives arent very affordable Also, most of us didnt grow up eating even vegetarian. There are a lot of nostalgic childhood dishes we ate that would be great to substitute with mock meats. Its still vegan. No animal had to die for it, and its delicious.
