There was a massive hip-hop scene in the UK in the early 80's starting with break dancing with the lino and boogie box on the shoulder I think even before Beastie Boys

London Posse - 1986. There were lots of UK artists like Derek B, MC Duke, Hi-Jack, Overlord X, Demon Boyz, etc who were all great (particularly Hi-Jack & Demon Boyz imo) but they were really mimicking US Rap. London Posse, in my opinion, were the 1st to really sound UK. Yes, many of their beats sounded distinctly US (maybe even specifically West Coast, depending on the track), but they were unmistakably British and they were pretty big in the UK back in the day

Rap was big in the UK since the earliest days. Rappers Delight was a hit over here, as was The Message by Grandmaster Flash, British punk band The Clash picked up on the New York hip hop scene in the late Seventies and even had an underground NYC club hit in 1980-81 with The Magnificent Seven (and also became huge influencers of the Beastie Boys by demonstrating that you could be a white rock band and do credible hip hop). There's actually a huge rock-rap crossover tradition in the UK that predates Aerosmith/Run DMC. John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten from the Sex Pistols) did "World Destruction", a collab with Afrika Bambaataa as Time Zone in 1984. The Clash's Mick Jones also went on to form Big Audio Dynamite (BAD) in the Eighties who mixed hip hop beats and sampling with rock and had a UK hit rap track with Sightsee MC! B.A.D were also associated with Derek B, a British rapper who used to open for the likes of Public Enemy and Run DMC when they came to Europe. Most homegrown rap in the UK in the Eighties wasn't groundbreaking and didn't sound like it was British people rapping. They were more copying what they were hearing coming out of the States and it took a while for British artists to stop putting on silly American accents when they rapped. However the point is, we've always listened to rap in the UK and it's always had high visibility in the UK charts since the early days.

I take meds every day and I’m so grateful for them. Without them I wouldn’t have the life I’m able to have now. I’m not saying it’s the same as Ren, or anyone else, just sharing a different experience. In some cases, some people would have nothing but relief knowing a pill, or ten, could ease their pain and help them live. …especially when there isn’t one. Hard to convey tone here, but mine is meant only to be open and sincere. I appreciate y’all and these conversations! And of course the reactions! 🥳

You guys are so fun to watch and have the best reactions. You got a subscribe from me. And you’re right, Ren does have another major condition that stemmed from the Lyme disease being untreated for so long. It’s called MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome) which has caused him to be allergic to about 95% of all food. He said he can only eat a handful of things, some meat and about 5 vegetables. So a lot of the pills you saw him taking are supplements and vitamins to give him the nutrients he needs because he can’t eat. It’s one of the issues they’re trying to work on while he gets treatment in Canada.

"Blinded by the Lights" by The Streets is what you were thinking of. The UK had a massive rap and hip-hop scene. Rappers Delight hit, The Message hit, Run DMC - before the Aerosmith crossover smashed them.

The UK hip hop scene was here from the beginning, early 80s (very underground) but didn't really become more know till the mid 80s, graffiti artists and break dancing brought the scene to the masses more so than the music did as there wasn't a lot of the music around as yet and wasn't been played on mainstream TV/Radio. In 1983 a series of compilation albums called "Street Sounds Electro' came out which really popularised the music, a mix of what we now call hip-hop and what was called Electro (the term hip hop didn't get used till later on and referred to the culture rather than just the music). By the late 80s a new music scene and culture was born called 'Acid House' this was huge in the Uk and overshadowed the hip-hop scene. From Acid House developed Uk House, Techno, Drum n' Bass and Jungle, all these music genres then influenced UK Hip Hop/Rap which differentiates it from the sounds coming from America.... The band 'The Streets' you mentioned, had their first single in 2001.

Hip Hop hit the UK so really in 87 ...the British Underground Hip Hop scene started earlier but the breakthrough with radio play started in 87 which was the year of the first useable samplers...with artist like Stereo MC´s who started as pure Hip Hip band, or Derek B, Wee Papa Girl Rappers, Cookie crew, Monie Love, Hardnoise, Silver Bullet, London Posse, Cold Cut (= British DJ team who remixed Eric B&Rakim´s track Paid in Full directly after the release with the iconic start of a voice saying "This is a journey into sound" then sampling Ofra Haza´s chorus of her track "In min alu" and then Paid in full kicks in), Bomb the base (also British DJ team)...to name some out of the top of my head.

It’s a tribute to the Beastie Boys, not a cover. Totally new song, just the same song title so you know it’s homage to the Bestie Boys even if you didn’t see the music video. Also, Hip Hop hit the UK same time it hit everywhere in the US, late 70s/early 80s. I mean Pharcyde is from the Uk and they were huge in the early 90s. And they probably got their start in the 80s over in the UK. And Smokey is correct, taking meds everyday is not a pleasant experience.🤘🏼

Hey, Hollywood. I guarantee I could put a Beastie Boys list together that’d change your mind. People don’t realize just how versatile they were. Shit. You could literally just watch the first 15 minutes of the MTV live in Glasgow and your mind would be blown. Especially, because you are “not a Beastie Boys fan”. The fact is that they had an IMMEASURABLE effect on rap music and things would be very different if they weren’t part of the picture. And that’s a fact.

In answer to your question Rappers delight was the first track I heard in the UK then the Beastie Boys, Run DMC ,Public Enemy ,NWA, Cypress Hill, Wu-Tang, clan. To me Gill Scott heron’s musical poetry and Curtis Mayfield songs about street life where laying the ground work for rap to emerge and Blues even before that. There has always been a strong Hip Hop Rap following in the UK . We have a strong Caribbean musical influence.A lot of us grew up with Reggae/Dub and Ragga man MC’s spitting at dance hall Parties, which I believe pre dates rapping , you can hear the West Indie’s influence in UK rappers to this day-Check out 👑Akala ,Kano,Lowkey, Ghetts, lol Simz🔥🤌🏽 Really enjoying your Ren reactions

Ren actually does have some really bad days he's posted quite a few of them on his insta I believe I keep seeing videos and shorts and I believe that's where they're coming from but he has his bad days too. I'm really glad that he blew up this because he did because now that he has them on his bad days they won't be so bad anymore and as far as what else he has he probably has lingering illnesses in the brain from his misdiagnosis those pills that they give you for mental health I think I know what they do and I'm not sure exactly what pills they had him on for how long what dosage so I can't tell you exactly how long it would take to reverse those effects especially if they've actually changed the chemicals if that's the case then yeah he'll have to take certain pills not all of those but certain pills for the rest of his life like I do otherwise the illness will pop right back up. But it does make you stronger living this kind of life and like he said in Hi Ren I was made to be beaten and broken. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I really love the line about the pendulum but anyways this is one of my favorite songs I absolutely adore the chorus and the switches and everything Ren is truly amazing

I have to take 4 a day from Migraine headaches to high cholesterol. I hate it!! I don’t take it everyday because I hate it. This started when I was 20 yrs old. I related to his battle with everyday meds that you will always question.

Nice reaction. Also there was a massive Hip Hop scene in the UK from the start of the 80s. LL Cool J, Mantronix, UTFO and Roxanne Shanté/The Real Roxanne. Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force, Planet Rock is still one of my favourites, and loads of others. But yes, they were nearly all American, but we were really into it back then. :-)

I have bipolar pretty bad and have been on medication now if some type for 30 years. The ones I'm on now I've been on since 2008, with little occasional changes here and there. I'll have to be on it for life. I would've been dead now if not for medication. But I'm also not one for big pharma. I think drs over prescribe meds. Some ppl have never needed them but become dependent. It's just a really tight line to Walk

Sampling hit seriously early in the UK. Lead figure in the sampling genre was Mark Stewart. He and his band, Mark Stewart and the Mafia were pressing heavily sampled LPs as early as 1981. He recollected in a recent interview being blown away by NY DJs (later called MCs) who mixed sampled cuts into their routines. Sampling definitely preexisted all that, and Mark Stewart was neither a rapper nor a hip hop artist, but he was a key predecessor to the genre in the UK. Check out “Learning to Cope with Cowardice”.

I just had to share this cuz you said 80 and I just happened to finally stumbled across a full live version of Trump's rally in Iowa and was watching it and it made me come to the conclusion that Trump is an alien😂😂😂 I mean look at him what 80 year old looks like that or still has that much ability to not only articulate words but to put authoritative power behind the words... Not that I like everything Trump does but he is a strong man. I've just never seen a two-year-old look like that maybe he's in relation to one of those kings from the Bible😂😂

Being a NYC style that Hollywood usually doesn’t like, I feel like you can accept Ren doing his version of it because it’s an updated throwback. Not fully “as” the old NYC style.
