After you watch the video for the first time go back and read his comments for that video. He explains why you haven't heard of him (he was misdiagnosed as bi-polar/depressive when in reality he spent 17 years suffering from Lymes disease). He explains in detail. I understand that you don't want to read the comments before your reaction, but go back and read the ones that you have already done. You will understand his music even further. As surprising as it is... you all are actually missing some of him by not knowing his story.

Yes definitely watch this and make sure it's the FULL version because there's a reason as to why you have to watch in the correct order. Three videos all one shot and performed live. I agree with you. It seems that Ren has been around for years and I only knew of his existence due to Hi Ren. But then again....I am 56 years old and a bit out of the loop!!!

'Ill' can be used to describe being unwell in the UK. So Illest Of Our Time has a double meaning since Ren has been super unwell for a long time. Great song and look forward to more Ren.

I think that's the way it was meant to be.

Ren does drop the occasional brag rap, although this one particularly is filled with double entendres. Personally, dude's super humble and thankful for any attention his music gets. Check out his birthday stream from the other day after he dropped Illest. Seeing how fast all the reaction videos were going up made him cry. Guy's built different. Plus, he's totally independent as an artist, with it just being him and his mates doing all the work.

Indeed. Something a lot of people are not getting: he is entirely independent and produces ALL of his music himself, from the beats, production workflow, lyrics, and every sound in every song. His friends help him produce the videos and assist him in distributing his music to D-platforms. Again, it must be reiterated: he is completely independent and does not have any official agents, management, producers, or labels. He is all his own. Celebrate it. Embrace it. Love him for it. Love you Ren! ^^

Oh you want a story? The Tale of Jenny and Screech(full) by Ren shows he is a master of his craft. This is defo in my top 5 storytelling tracks of all time. No hyperbole, it's really that good.

As others said he just turned 33 (this song was released on his birthday), he started out with dreams of being a DnB producer, also MCed on DnB beats when young. Then he started busking, formed some bands etc., he caught the eye of the music industry and had a contract with Sony, but his sickness got worse and he was more or less confined to bed for many years and was dropped by the label (I can see the parallel to this song actually, at the most hyped point, the beat changes and "I don't feel so well" - he is probably telling that story among other things, many of the bars refer to his previous work, inside the mind of the illest of our time)

Of course "ill" is a double here but he made a post explaining that it mainly refers to being medically ill (used that way more in the UK I guess). As for the rest of the sickness story, after trying many treatments, thanks to a doctor it was found that he was misdiagnosed for years and he had lyme disease. He was cured, but the virus being uncured for years, left permanent damage with his immune system, at the moment he is undergoing treatment to mitigate some of that damage. He says he is much better than he was before 2016 to the point of being functional but he is limited to a very strict diet, has fluctuating levels of energy that prevents him from going on tour, not to mention the mental issues caused by the trauma.

Ren has said this song is very much about his struggles to find answers to his health problems. That’s what the ending lines are about. Answers they never seem to find so until then he guesses he’s the illest of our time. The whole song is a double and it’s glorious.

Now you absolutely have to check out Ren "Losing it", bars all through, and makes you want to dance!😊

The live version of Chalk Outlines with Chinchilla is gold, definitely check that out as it shows how versatile Ren is.

There isn't anything Ren can't do. Should hear him sing sing. And one thing about Ren was that he was blessed with such a great vocabulary. His use of words is on such a higher level. Love yall reaction. I hope you dive more into his catalog. You honestly should hear Jenny and Screech tale (full) make sure it's the 13 min video it has all 3 short videos in order. Yes, Ren was born on March 29th, 1990. He released Illest of Our Time on his birthday.

Ren has been posting videos to his channel for 11 years. On his twitch livestream after "Illest" dropped, he said he's been working toward his current success since he was 12 years old. He is now 33. BTW, he produces all of his own beats.

Illest is a double cause Ren really is sick and has been searching for answers after being wrongly diagnosed for years.

Did Smokey miss the wrestling bar????? lmao, knew you guys would enjoy this. I think you're gonna like going through his back catalogue. The Tale of Jenny and Screech (a 3 part track) is amazing too, like watching a short film as our modern bard tells us a story from the streets.

Ren turned 33 the day “Illest of our time” dropped (March 29th). He is a Welsh musician/busker who has been making music since he was 12 years old. He is a multi-instrumentalist and multi-genre. He can not only rap, write, and create beats, but he’s also a phenomenal singer and storyteller. Ren self classifies his genre as “Bardcore”. He was also part of a band called The Big Push (you can find their music on YT as well). They are currently disbanded because Ren is in Canada getting treatment for his Lyme disease, which was misdiagnosed for years.

He's actually been around over ten years, but he got super sick with M.E. and Lyme disease, and has had to fight his way back from being incapacitated like 23 hrs a day. Dude is in his 30s.

Great Thoughts guys. I think Ren is 33 now. Yes he can Rep (fire!) but he can sing and play guitar to (some rock/ballad style and reaggy style... its just qrazy talant. For me the most outstanding thing is his realness... Much Love.

Some more rap by Ren try "Loosing it (Fisher rap retake)" and "Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve Retake)". The bassist for The Verve heard it and bought him a guitar.

Reminds me of what violent J said once. He was pissed when someone said he was old school rap. Until he realized he was and embraced it because he influenced so many rappers. Look at how many were influenced by the 90s rap, then the 2000s and so on. Ren and Tom McDonald are going to be the biggest influence on the NEXT generation. And nice shirt smokey!

His catalogue is pretty diverse he does rap, rock, a little ska, pop and he has another band called The Big Push that does a lot of covers. If you liked this song I would suggest Power, The Hunger, Genesis, Sic Boi, What You Want and Losing it. He spent years in isolated due to his Lyme disease. He was sick for 7 years before a correct diagnosis. He could just really join the worl in maybe 2017(?) He has been doing well in Uk, then pandemic happened. Now he is trying to heal some damage to immune system. He still has symptoms.

Ren is a top level musical artist who happens to be a top level rapper. He's in that rarefied airspace of artistry where you don't really fit inside one genre but fly above them. If anything he's the type of artistic genius that can create a genre from the synthesis of musical influences into something novel.
