    The Tale of Jenny and Screech. It's a song trilogy, a tragedy in three parts. Each song performed live in one take (like Hi Ren). Sounds completely different from both Hi Ren and Illest of Our Time. You want to see Ren's full range...guitar, singing, rhyme flows, performance...there you go.

    My personal favorite of his is Blind Eyed (Live). A lot of people like the “Angry car park attendant” version of that song because it’s funny, and it is… but I think their other live version on the street or MC Sessions is a better listen of the actual song itself. Not to mention it features Sam Tompkins, who is an amazing singer

    Angry car park attendant version is my favourite not because it’s funny but because of how casually they’re killing the song. It really shows how damn good they both are that it can sound that good when it’s such a chill performance while just having fun and things go wrong and they’re walking around. Effortlessly amazing. I'm almost 60 and I've never seen anyone make an impact like this since Freddie Mercury, and he broke the mould at the time. Ren's artistry, ability and vision is further reaching than Freddie's. Loved the reaction! I'm not sure how much you know about Ren's fight with Lyme disease, but a lot of the bars (including the title) are referring to that... also a lot of double and triple+ entendres in there. Here's a comment Ren posted shortly after the song's release (good read): "Overhwlemed by the amount of support for illest Of Our Time. Have been loving watching all the reaction videos and hearing everyone's interpretation. I never usually break down my own words because I love letting people apply their own meaning, but there was one line I wanted to explain. The title of the song. Alot of people took this to mean "The greatest Of Our Time" "Look for all the answers that I never seem to find, Till then I guess I'm still the illest of our time" Its my reluctance to be the illest - the clue is in the word 'guess' - ive spent the better part of a decade looking for solutions to the damage lyme disease dealt with countless doctors visits, and am still in that boat. "Illest" can also mean "dopest" "best" etc. So it's a bit of a double entendre. Same as "Sick boi" This theme is repeated with the line "elementary dear Watson you might find" cause Sherlock Holmes was always searching for the clues to piece the puzzle together, which is very relatable when trying to piece together parts of a very complex health picture, anyone with a very complex illness will relate to almost having to become your own detective. And finally "A pathologic entity - if eveything is set in stone then this is how its meant to be" Acceptance that this might just be the cards I've been dealt. To search for answers and simultaneously accept that chronic illnest may be your fate is a bit of a paradox because it is the rejection of acceptance that spurs you forward in the persuit of answers, but it is the acceptance that you may always be sick that let's you lead a more peaceful life... so one must walk this contradictory line between both opposing states to have the motivation to find the answers whilst not being so outcome dependent. Still haven't mastered this, but think it's an interesting concept."

    Also... Mercury... Freddy Mercury // Mercury the element is heavy - it also flows (liquid at room temp) // Mercury was also the god of eloquence, messages, and communication (also commerce, merchants, etc), and considered the inventor of music and the arts in Britain and Gaul. I think that makes it a quadruple entendre. LOL

    Ren - "Animal Flow" premiers 5/4. If you want to keep going with the rap aspect of Ren, "The Hunger", "Losing it (FISHER rap retake)", "Genesis" and more. I highly suggest jumping over to some of his other aspects though. His first viral video (11 million views too) was actually a few years ago while he was busking in the streets of Brighton - "Ren & Sam Tompkins - Earned it /Mans World / Falling". Also, of course, what I call his Shakespearian tragedy "The Tale of Jenny and Screech (Full)". the "Full" version is actually three live recordings combined. I suggest doing this rather than watching them separately.

    Once you get to know more of Ren's background, life story and catalog of music you'll also notice different Easter eggs Ren drops into the Schemes and some of the meanings you pick up reading in-bettween the bars he's spitting. My breakdown of "I don't feel so well" section. 😁🤩 I don’t feel so hot my brother Aching, shaking, stop then stutter Things gone wrong Hit by King King Kong A Swan-ton bomb like Hardy Brothers He's explaining what he's been going through, his symptoms, how he feels when he's at his worst, (aching, shaking, stuttering). What the pain is like when it's bad, like being (hit by King Kong) or (Slamed on his head) by the WWE wrestlers the Hardy brothers. I don't feel so fresh my bro Things get slurry speaking slow Head in Hong Kong wonton soup Is what I have for Brains I know Second stanza is some of the side effects/damage he's experienced (Things get slurry speaking slow) caused by the Lyme disease going undiagnosed for so long. The Lyme ate away at the Cerebral Cortex {membrane surrounding his brain} explaining the bar (Wonton Soup is what I have for Brains, I know). That's why he's in Canada being treated by one of the top specialists in the World who may be able to save him from brain damage and give him a chance at a long and healthy life. Much of Ren's past experiences with the medical system, health issues, depression, his vieews on society/gov is part of his music.😎

    Good break down! I really wish reactors watched the music in the order we got them, seen so many miss that the entire song is just doubles talking about how he's actually sick. While he's using every line to also tell everyone he's 'the illest'(best) of our time

  • @serendipitish

    @serendipitish

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, so many doubles/triples referring to his illness: sick little puppy; iron lung = the lungs for bars without a breath, but also an early version of a ventilator, used for polio patients; psychopathic tendencies; detectives = searching for a proper diagnosis/treatment; spoonful of sugar helps him take his prescribed medicine, but when he's merry and poppin' off, he's also the sweet spoonful that helps us take OUR medicine (the facts he spits). Shotgun shell to the noggin = the suicidal temptations he's had at low points in his illness; catchy bronchitis, funeral coffin is an obvious one; 666 and villain/masochist bars, evangelism described as cancerous = spiritual illness. Hooligans vs police, hierarchies and tearing down royalty = social illness. Heavy metal mercury is a good catch, and mercury is also toxic and causes chronic illness. @Robert Marar -- Love your breakdown of the illness references in the "don't feel so well" verse; I don't think it's coincidental that this section interrupts some of the hardest bars in the song -- I see it as a parallel to how his illness stopped his music career just as it was getting going. (the only part of this bar I haven't seen anyone comment on yet is how he rhymes "King Kong" and "Swanton" with "Hong Kong" and "Wonton"...delightful!) Finally, tattered/broken wings are a common metaphor for people who don't have their full health anymore; also possibly a reference to fallen angels and Icarus (as well as his own "banishment" from the music industry when he got ill). Intuition gettin' wise being the silver lining Ren's found in his experiences with mental illness. And then, per Ren's explanation, the ending goes back to the detective metaphor -- still looking for the right treatments, until then he's both Illest and Illest. 🖤

    The Hunger, Losing it, Humble, Genesis, Power, Money Game PI & II, Tale of Jenny & Screech Trilogy, Sick Boi, every duet with Chinchilla and Sam Tomkins, everything with the band he was in called The Big Push. What I'm getting to here is that this guy Ren doesn't do fillers and you will be scratching your head wondering WTF? What styles and genres doesn't he do? Add to that a whole lot more of WTF did I just watch unique experiences. Not to mention a pretty cool and heavily invested/connected exploding fanbase from all walks, all ages, all parts of the world. Enjoy the ride, it's a blast

    What a rabbit hole to go down. His stuff is varied, catchy, and well done all around. From his busking with The Big Push and Sam, to his live vocal duets with Chinchilla. His older rap like Ocean, his newer stuff like The Hunger, Genesis, Losing It (Fisher retake)..... Then all the stuff that borders between a modern day bard and performance art like The Tale of Jenny and Screetch and Hi Ren. The guy really is a diamond in the rough- and being that he's independent (in the truest sense) makes it all that more amazing. Glad people are finding him.

    So glad to here you enjoying Ren…Trust me when I say there isn’t another rabbit hole that’s has the depths and layers to it that a Ren rabbit hole does. He literally does it all. Everything is different. You’ll have a new experience every time you listen to something of his. He truly is gifted. The man will blow your mind. His storytelling is second to none. If you want more RAP RAP stuff that shows off his talents you HAVE to see “Hunger”. That’ll prove he can Rap Rap. Then do “Genesis” and then do “The Tale of Jenny & Screech (Full)” to get your mind blown in a different way. Enjoy the ride. Ren isn’t just an artist, he’s an experience.

    Definitely look into him and his backstory more! Most of his talk about illness and stuff is because since he was young he's dealt with being in and out of the hospital with chronic illnesses and being misdiagnosed for things with autoimmune disorders and how it's all taken a toll on his mental health while trying to stay positive through the whole journey because he truly loves life and music. He really is one of those "heart on his sleeve" artists that lets you know how much passion and talent he has for what he does.
