I always said Tool is our generations Pink Floyd. To hear you say they are the greatest bands ever makes me so happy they are my favorite 2 bands easily.
"DMT in music form" - that's Floyd, for sure! Clare Torrey, who sang this, was invited in as a session singer and told to listen to the music, feel it, and sing (sounds, not words) over it. She did it in two takes and the second one was used for the album track. The most perfect album ever recorded - every track a gem and every track a brick in the wall of sound that the album is. In the Billboard 200 for 917 weeks, easily longer than any other album. 15 Platinum discs! I saw Floyd do this live in 1975 and again in 1989. Nice choice and perfect reaction.

She did not do it in "two takes". It was the result of a long recording session where she did what she did. The end product is what producer Alan Parsons pieced together. It was not performed as you hear it in other words.

@@paulmahon1613 Thats mostly correct. She tried several different types of vocals for the track before she did the "Two takes". She wasnt sure how to approach the song and they didnt want to direct her. She finally settled on how she wanted to do it and after the 2nd take she said that a 3rd take wouldnt add anything. Thats when Parsons edited the two takes and achieved the final cut.

Never seen Hollywood so animated. For the full experience you do need to listen to the whole album start to finish, that's really the only way to do it. First time I listened to DarkSide I was laying on my friends floor in the middle of the night coming down off mushrooms. It was magic.
I've been a tool fan for a while. Just got into Pink Floyd. It took a while for me. I really appreciate how they make music into art, and the way they make you feel it and experience it rather than just hearing it. It does a lot for me to relax and give my attention to the process. This song makes me feel like they think there's hope after dying. There's nothing for them to say, just an expression of raw emotion.

Porcupine Tree was Steven Wilson band before he went solo, and both "sides" of his music are amazing. The Steven Wilson "Hand.Cannot.Erase" Album is a must listen from beginning to finish, its a concept album based on a real story about a woman who was found dead in her apartment about a year after she died. I’ve always thought of Tool as the the Pink Floyd of our generation. Pink Floyd was edgy and heavy for their time, but they didn’t sacrifice any creativity to be in the rock genre. Sounds like Tool to me. Also, I agree with Hollywood’s assessment. Pink Floyd sits on top. Not taking anything away from the Beatles, nor their influence on all of music, but I still agree with Hollywood.

The way of singing is like a soul cry after death. In Pulse concert this song sing three singers. Great reaction. Take care about Yourself.
This is a timeless track, but you need to listen to the entire Dark Side of the Moon album from beginning to end.
You guys are killing it. Love it!
I could be wrong, but I believe that the passionate vocalization is representative of dying. Her voice expresses the railing against death and the gradual acceptance and embrace of demise.
This is the 5 stages of grief. denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Clare did it just right here. Floyd has had other women sing this but no one get close to this.
You mentioned this song has no lyrics, but it does. The message in the beginning about "...not afraid of dying...", but more importantly, the message at 9:47 "If you can hear this whispering you are dying".

Of Course is probably one of my favorite songs of theirs.
I think this song is especially noteworthy because this was neither Roger, nor David's song. It was Richard's song with an outsider doing the vocals. Despite this, the song is incredibly iconic and indicative of everything we know and love about Pink Floyd. Its also interesting to note that Clare herself was ultimately dissatisfied with her performance and was convinced that she would never hear from the band again. 6 months later she found out that the album was #1 in the US which was a monumental feat for a European band.
A DMT trip is literally detailed in Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned by Tool.
Was in the charts from 1973 till 1988: 15 years and still sells around 1500 copies a week
You guys should read the story about the original singer Clare Torry, (plus, it is shocking to see her because there is another live version done later with just her because she looks like an English home maker), but she ended up suing them for credit as a co-writer because they told her the song is about death, and she started to sing something on first take and they were like, "no we don't want that", so she got the idea to use her voice like an instrument and this was her second take. She left there not knowing anything and getting paid for x amount of hours of her time, the going rate. Then when she heard the album and realized they used her entire part and that pretty much made her a co-writer she took them to court and won. However, she was on stage with them at a later date doing this song, so I guess bygones were bygones at that point!
The Wizard of Oz starts out in black & white, and transitions to color after the opening sequence. It's generally thought of as the first major motion picture to be filmed and distributed in color (though it isn't) because it's the first color movie most Americans were exposed to
GREAT GIG IN THE SKY LIVE (PULSE DVD) is one of the greatest live performances of all time! I would love to see that reaction!
Same thing with Smokey introducing Hollywood to Tool, but this time it is switched around! And again from all of us: Thank you so much, guys, for experiencing stuff you like together, showing each other new music and developing your taste. Also you should do the whole album on one sitting and put it on Patreon (I am not a patron, but I still think it is the better idea). I don't think you should listen to it broken up and out of order. The whole album is an experience. You could also break it up in editing and make it a whole project, which would be fitting for such an artist.

The song is about death. The stages of dying or stages of grieving. One of them described Clare Torry as a housewifely white woman, lol. It's often said she did it in one take, but here is what David Gilmore said: We gave her some dynamic hints: "Maybe you'd like to do this piece quietly, and this piece louder." She did maybe half a dozen takes, and then afterwards we compiled the final performance out of all the bits. It wasn't done in one single take.

Wizard of Oz was shot in colour. Was originally shot in both sepia, black-and-white, and Technicolor.
Listen to Echoes, doesn't matter whether album or live( Pompeii or Gdansk), all versions are mind blowing , listen, close your eyes and just enjoy the ride
It's about death and the emotions of grief that lead to acceptance.

Pink Floyd paved the road and Tool maintains the road
There are three live versions under the Floyd name. Clare Torrey did a live version as part of Floyd's segment of the Knebworth concert in 1990. Rachel Fury, Durga McBroom and Margret Taylor did the live version on Delicate Sound of Thunder (1987). Samantha Brown, Durga McBroo and Claudia Fontaine performed it in 1994 on the P*U*L*S*E album.
Wizard of Oz was one of the first ever movies in color... 1939. Dark Side came out in 1973.
OK, .. on the album it is one gal Claire Torry , she was asked to come in and improvise and she would try to add words and Roger would say , NO, no words ... and she didn't know what to do .... then she decided to imagine herself as an instrument ..... NOW LIVE the band would always have 3 separate gals do the song .... NOW the two gals that Roger Waters had brought me to tears ... up to that point ... over 100 concerts .. I had never cried at a concert ... the two blonde gals are actually their own group called LUCIOUS ... look up Roger Waters live staples center great gig in the sky , on youtube ... that is where I cried
Wizard of Oz was one of the earliest films to be filmed in color but did have black and white for the non dream section

Try any of these from Ummagumma: Astronomy Domine (8:29) Careful With That Axe, Eugene (8:50) Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun (9:12) A Saucerful of Secrets (12:48)
Hollywood, love your comments about Pink Floyd. I could not agree more. Comparing Tool to them is very fair. They both could be considered Prog Rock bands. Floyd is one of my all time favorites! Great breakdown on their impact. I hold them far above the others you mentioned. I would put them over The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and such, but I also think they are in a different sub-genre. Comparing to The Wizard of Oz, have you ever watched Dark Side of the Rainbow where they sync the music to The Wizard of Oz? Dark Side of the Moon holds the records of most charted weeks of being on Billboard's Top 200 albums with 950+,736 consecutively from its release in 1973 to 1988. The album second on that list with Legend by Bob Marley with 625.

No question. Its without a doubt their most Tool like song. Probably one of Rogers most prolific and powerful base riffs.
Smokey was right about the era that Wizard of Oz was made in, but he was wrong about it being originally in black and white, and “colorized” later... it was simply one of the VERY FIRST films to actually be in color (I believe it was “technicolor”)... that was the whole point about the big reveal when she lands in oz... Kansas, before the tornado was all black and white, or basically sepia-tone, and when she’s hit by the tornado and basically goes into a psychedelic dream dimension, they wanted to make it look SO spectacular and vivid to actually be shown in color and BLOW the fucking audiences’ minds... and they did a prefect job by making it black and white right until that very last moment when the door opens and behind it is oz, and the color just blasts you in the face after getting so used to the black and white. Great film: even better with Floyd added.
I used to bash E/Molly at the weekends and during that pre-comedown part I used to listen to this song on repeat for HOURS and would end up inside my duvet while trying to push myself through my bedroom wall haha it was magic!! 😂😂😂

I was raised on Pink Floyd, and Dark Side will always hold a special place in my heart, but personally my favorite Floyd album is Animals;there's just something primal about it that touches my soul. Another weird little thing, cue their album Ummaguma to start playing after Dark Side ends when you're trying the whole Dark Side/Wizard of Oz experiment;it's crazy as hell but you'll find that album oddly synching with the film as well:for example, the track Grandchester Meadows starts playing when Dorothy and company are falling asleep in the poppy field and Glenda saved them with her magic. Might just be coincidence, but then again I think V put it best in V for Vendetta when he said,"There are no coincidences."😊
Pink Floyd and Zep are the pinnacle. Pink Floyd has sold 1/4 billion records
