That's awesome! My Dad would blast one of their albums through the house at max volume to wake me and my sister up for school every morning. I now play them for my son while waiting for the bus. My Dad was lucky enough to get to see them live in '88 at Mile High Stadium in Denver Colorado. He loved Pink Floyd. It's a bitter sweet experience listening to them now because it brings back so many wonderful memories but it also reminds me that he's gone.

Syd Barrett only appeared on their first album Piper at the Gates of Dawn, which was really a psychedelic pop album. Syd came into the studio one day during the recording of this album but the guys didn't recognize him at first because he was bald and gained a lot of weight. Someone took a picture of him there. A Momentary Lapse of Reason came out in the late '80s, after Roger Waters had left the band. Smokey most definitely needs more Floyd in his life!👍 I highly recommend the Animals album, which is truly phenomenal and sadly always relevant. It’s loosely based on George Orwell’s book Animal Farm.

It pained Waters to see his friend so lost, so detached, so disengaged from the world around him. “Wish You Were Here” deals with that mental inability - the refusal, even - to engage with reality, and it served as much as a rallying for Waters as a sad tribute to Barrett's better days.

  • @anessalyn1035

The song is about the detached feeling most people go through life with. How people cope with the world by withdrawing physically, mentally, or emotionally. Roger Waters states the songs inspiration was founding member Syd Barrett and his battle with schizophrenia. I never knew that either, just always thought it was just another epic song from the group.

Syd was the primary songwriter, lead guitarist, and sang lead. He eventually had a mental breakdown that was exacerbated by his use of drugs. Eventually, he became unreliable, like just standing on stage without playing or singing. Gilmore was brought into the band to replace him. A lot of material was written about him, like this song and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" (my personal favorite). Syd turned up at the studio the day they recorded this song. No one recognized him. His head was shaved. He'd shaved his eyebrows off, gained a lot of weight and had a far off stare. Finally, someone realized it was Syd. His appearance devastated the band members. Apparently, he asked when he was supposed to record his part. Syd's appearance is referenced in the lines from "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" as "now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky" and "you reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon".

Morning! Pink Floyd IS my favorite band! Hollywood, you’re right that Floyd was first in space-“Delicate sound of Thunder” was the album played. This song is about Syd who came to visit the band in studio while they were writing this album. Very sad watching their childhood friend,Syd,”going mad”. I recently read a book on Syd’s life. He seemed like such a cool kid, with so much talent and potential and everyone in the band, including David Gilmour loved and respected Syd, he was just fading away from reality. Great reaction! Always hoping for more Floyd-I’ve suggested some to y’all but happy with any. Happy Labor Day!

This song is about absence, loss, wishing you made different choices, and not being present in the moment. It's party inspired by seeing what happened to Syd, but more inspired by what the band felt at the time. They were all quite absent, with their minds being elsewhere, they didn't know how to follow up DSOTM, or if they even wanted to follow it up, and the fractures within the group had started.

A Momentary Laps of Reason was released in '87 just after or right as Roger Watters had left the band (I'm not 100% on the time-line of those events). The entire Wish You Were Here album was a tribute to Syd even though he was still alive. Also Syd wasn't exactly kicked out so much as he agreed he should leave due to his mental health issues. After Syd left it's complicated as to the position of lead singer because the singing was fairly evenly divided amongst David Gilmore, Roger Watters and Richard Wright with the bulk probably falling in the corners of Gilmore and Watters.

For me this song is about the loss of a friend, partner or mentor, a person you could thankfully run your own ideas about life by. Someone who was in the same predicament as you and who was also trying to solve the puzzle of 'who are we' and 'why is this happening'. Friends are a true gift to us, and help us arrive at a truth that we are most comfortable with. God bless ya Pink Floyd!

You were half right. This song (and the entire "Wish You Were Here" album) was dedicated to their friend Syd Barret. Parts of the song were added in that had nothing to do with Syd. Roger Waters himself has said that the song is open to interpretation. Syd was the lead singer and guitarist on their first album "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" and contributed parts of the second album "A Saucerful Of Secrets". After a really bad acid trip caused Syd to stand motionless and not say a word in front of a large audience, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright know they had no choice but to replace him. So they asked their friend David Gilmour to take his place, but let Syd live with them for some time. Eventually Syd caught on that he was no longer part of the band, so he left and even recorded a solo album. Eventually his drug addiction and madness got the better of him, and he was forced to go live with his mother and sister until his death many years later.

Syd Barrett was a founding member of Pink Floyd, the band's main composer and lyricist, guitarist and singer. He was forced to leave the band in 1968 due to mental problems caused by excessive LSD use. David Gilmour (his school friend) toured with them initially, filling in for Syd (when he was unwell) on both vocals and, of course, guitar. The album Wish You Were Here was dedicated by Pink Floyd to Barret (as was Shine On You Crazy Diamond). Incidentally, Pink Floyd often referenced Barrett in their later work. Barrett then tried to embark on a solo musical career but was quite unsuccessful. He later quit music altogether and continued to paint until his death in 2006. By the way - the name Pink Floyd is Batter's invention. He had two cats (Pink and Floyd) named after two American blues musicians - Pink Anderson and Floyd Cecil ;-).

Yes, David Gilmour (lead guitarist) had stated he wrote this song about Syd Barrett who was in the original Pink Floyd, but got too into drugs, and got mental from it, and had to leave. He died on the young side, and this song was dedicated to him. I saw Pink Floyd in the late sixties/early seventies at Madison Square Garden. My best friend since HS who has since passed a few months ago, went to see them WAY too high, and were sitting with our legs hanging over the balcony. They were the perfect band for that night, and sounded SO amazing. David's voice & guitar was mesmerizing. I miss those days so much...

Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett (6 January 1946 - 7 July 2006) David Gilmour replaced Syd. Did Syd Barrett get royalties? For the last 15 years of his life Syd Barrett lived a mostly peaceful life in Cambridge, England. His not insubstantial Pink Floyd royalties meant he never needed money, but he did once work for a short time as a gardener at the urging of his mother, who thought he should keep occupied. He was a painter before and after being in Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd recorded several tributes and homages to him, including the 1975 song suite "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and the 1979 rock opera The Wall. In 1988, EMI released an album of unreleased tracks and outtakes, Opel, with Barrett's approval. In 1996, Barrett was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Pink Floyd. He died of pancreatic cancer in 2006. Pink Floyd were founded in 1965 by Syd Barrett (guitar, lead vocals), Nick Mason (drums), Roger Waters (bass guitar, vocals), and Richard Wright (keyboards, vocals). Under Barrett's leadership, they released two charting singles and the successful debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967). Guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour joined in December 1967; Barrett left in April 1968 due to deteriorating mental health. Waters became the primary lyricist and thematic leader, devising the concepts behind the band's peak success with the albums The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979). The musical film based on The Wall, Pink Floyd - The Wall (1982), won two BAFTA Awards. Pink Floyd also composed several film scores. As ever Wikipedia.

How thec west was won, and the dragon snake- Houston 1977 are on my Playlist. An important thing to realize about zeppelin is they are a live band. Going off on 20 minute solos at times and not just with the guitar. But they played almost freestyle, and never playing the exact same way every time. It was incredible.

This is an older band member turning on the radio to hear an old hit of his friend so he baths in the former glory and jams along. And then it's the realisation that Syd has been lost to his mental health and addictions.

The record you're thinking of that was sent into space on a satellite is the Golden Record that was attached to the two Voyager spacecraft. It had spoken greetings recorded in numerous languages, natural sounds of Earth like thunder and whale songs, and it also had a lot of music from all over the world as well as a diagram on how to play the record. I think the only rock song contained on it was Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry. Both copies of that record are now travelling through interstellar space where they will likely survive for billions of years.

Syd essentially broke his mind with LSD, etc. The band fired him after several television performances and studio sessions that were disasters. He lived in an apartment as a recluse for nearly 40 years until he passed away. Sad waste of immense creativity.

David Gilmour says that it always makes him think of Syd, but Roger Waters said that he wrote it more about himself, talking to himself, and trying to remind himself to be in the present instead of getting up in his own head.

Yeah, Syd was the original frontman. When he started struggling with mental health, the band brought in Syd's friend David Gilmour in order to pick up the slack for Syd's erratic playing and behavior and also to try to help by being a stabilizing influence on Syd. Kind of worked but not to the extent they hoped. Eventually Syd quit the band and David Gilmour stayed. Syd even released a bit of solo music with Gilmour collaborating with him, but his mental health issues, which had always been made worse by drugs, became too much and Syd became for all intents and purposes a hermit and quit music. Both this song and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" are about his bandmates/friends struggling to deal with what happened to him and how they couldn't help him and how his quitting fundamentally changed the course of Pink Floyd's career for good or bad since he was not only the main singer but one of the main songwriters before he quit. Basically, much like Genesis or Sabbath, there's two different Pink Floyds. One with Syd Barret and one with David Gilmour. Guess Gilmour felt a bit guilty that he took Syd's place in the band even if it happened in a way that wasn't really his fault, so he wrote songs about how he missed his friend.

It wasn't "Wish You Were Here" that was played in space first, aboard the Russian Mir Space Station the Pink Floyd album "Delicate Sound of Thunder" which is a live album was the first album ever played in space and I think it was 1988! I only learned this by checking on Google. That's why Pink Floyd is synonymous with outer space! Besides a lot of their music like set the controls for the heart of the Sun and even the title Dark Side of the Moon etc.

Yes, this was about Syd, but Syd was still alive. Syd wrote almost everything on the first album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn in 1967 (Roger wrote one) and one song on the second album, A Sauceful of Secrets (1968). Saucer is the only album to include all five members, but Syd David are only both on guitar on one song and may not have recorded together.. Syd was the singer and guitarist. Gilmour replaced Syd in 1968. They were childhood friends. This was 1975. Syd was alive. Syd showed up while recording this album. He was fat and had a fully shaved head, including eyebrows. The band didn't initially recognize him. A Momentary Lapse of Reason was 1987. The first without Roger Waters. Syd died in 2006. Keyboardist Richard Wright died in 2008. David, Roger and drummer Nick Mason are still alive. Roger is on tour. There are a few songs where Roger plays guitar and a couple where David plays bass. A lot where they play with synths. Syd may have been schizophrenic, but hus family denies mental illness. He was definitely on a ton of drugs during his Floyd and solo album period.

"A Momentary Lapse of Reason" was not their first album, it was the first after Roger left the band. Gilmore did replace Syd. After Syd went mad, David joined and up until "Lapse", Roger and David pretty much shared lead vocals, though I believe David did more of them. The biggest example of them sharing the role was on "The Wall". Not only did they share song by song, but they also shared within a single song, twice that I can think of, "Mother" and "Comfortably Numb". Roger's voice is a bit deeper and emotes a lot of pain while David's is often just as deep but softer. Throughout "The Wall", Roger mainly portrayed the character "Pink" while David would voice the "Mother" character. That entire album has a lot of back and forth between the two of them. Also, I believe you are correct that "Wish" is about Syd and I know "Shine On" is definitely about him, and both are on this record. The other songs on "Wish You Were Here" are "Have a Cigar" and "Welcome to the Machine", both of which are about the record industry, to the best of my knowledge.

Weird story-as this song (or was it Shine In You Crazy Diamond) was being recorded, a disheveled man came into the studio and checked out what was happening. No one knew who it was but they let him hang out. After he got up and left, they came to the realization that it was actually Syd (he was still alive at this point, they just didn’t recognize him at first because his look changed so much). Syd founded Pink Floyd and eventually recruited Gilmore into the band before he left
