Randall Lee Smith : Lyin' Randall
Nobody knows why Randall Lee Smith carried out the crimes he did. Decades after murdering two people in the Appalachian Mountains, he tried to murder two more people with absolutely no motive.

Yes, but what about the dog, Bo?
He was sentenced to 15 years for each murder, totaling 30 years. But he only served half that because he was a perfectly behaved model prisoner. So he was released from prison where he -lived a totally crime free life for the rest of his days- tried to murder two more hikers for absolutely no reason.

It’s amazing how they let out prisoners like this early for ‘good behaviour’. Like of course he was well behaved, no hikers going through a prison. A bit like PDFiles who get out due to ‘good behaviour’…. No kids in prison…

If they'd figure out something else to do with people who don't have violence in their nature, something that's actually rehabilitative & addresses the drug and mental health crises, they could have plenty of room to keep Lyin Randall and people like him out of society. Every single American person & our visitors are all living at the mercy of these problems, whether they are dealing with them personally or not.

Those two men showed him nothing but kindness and friendship and he repayed them with evil. I wouldn't be surprised if he did the same to his original victims. That's why I never, EVER let someone make me feel guilty about not trusting people. It doesn't matter how kind and good you are to someone evil. If they're gonna hurt you, they're just gonna hurt you. And so I'm happy to be "paranoid" (i.e., untrusting and careful). There are still people these days who think that locking your doors/windows is paranoid, but monsters like this let me know otherwise. And the system is really funny in how they treat certain people. Dude took the lives of two people without provocation and they just let him out because he knew how to bide his time. Brilliant.

Honestly, you should not stop mistrusting people, until you know them well at least. I was an old fool last year and tried to help someone I didn't know to register his car. Gained a stalker, harasser, broke into my dying mom's apartment, threatened not just me but several other people. Police, as usual, can't do anything. Le sigh. I'm not trusting easily again. Tho it's pretty late to learn that at 46

It’s looking bleaker in society from here on in, but I suppose my granny said the same in her day……👼 Now older and wiser, no way hose……I’ll chuck you a few bucks, some food or whatever but you WILL NOT be invited into my home or my life. Remember I’m older and wiser. The folk that make you feel guilty or bad are the very same folk that will try and use and abuse you.! So glad the hiker voiced her concerns. Most people would just think they got stood up and go on with their day. Trust your gut, its better to be safe than sorry. You might save a life or at least help catch a criminal and help bring closure to loved ones. I dont think this case would have been solved if she didnt report them missing. They would have slipped through the cracks and become another jane and john doe like too many others.
Randall's attempt to kill the duo that were helping him out is as unhinged as it gets. It's like a horror movie, but without being supernatural. If it was a possession, it would make some sense

This is why I don't trust people and I don't go out of my way to help them. I'm not going to be ashamed for protecting myself. If it's not something like this it's someone getting fixated. Hell, back when I was in the States, you couldn't even smile at some people (or even be smiling to yourself) without them coming up trying to get something from you. An evil person doesn't need a reason. Once they mark you for execution, it doesn't matter what you do. They're gonna at least attempt to have their way.

There are many many murders and unexplained disappearances on the Appalachian Trail, a crazy creepy amount of them. Funny Jiles did this one because I just watched another video from a different creator about a different couple that was killed hiking it. This story does sound like a horror movie. You do an incredible job telling these stories. Ty for your hard work.
Recently, I saw this story on another KZread channel. But as usual, Jiles, your version is very interesting, making it seem as though the listener is right there ... a fly-on-the-wall, as it were. So, thank you Jiles, for your care & empathy in telling the true stories of so many innocent victims and the psychopaths who took their lives. They really ARE monsters! [I must admit, there are times when your sarcastic comments about these a/holes actually make me laugh. So thanks again, mate ... looking forward to watching your next video. An Australian fan!]
You rock! Thank you so much for your PSA on mental health and abuse. So needed!!
Jiles, I think you can make an entire season based on the Appalachian trails alone. There are so many eerie stories. And not just murder, but incest, trafficking, corruption, drugs... you name it.
Very good storyteller. I appreciate the occasional snarky asides. Keep up the good work.
Commenting for the algorithm- T.I.M is one of my most favourite of the many true crime channels I follow 😊 Another brilliant telling of a truly miserable tale. Thank you for raising awareness, and especially for the 'domestic abuse' message that you end every video with.

The first two victims weren't interviewed?!
Yes! Monsters!!
This sounds like an absolute nightmare, two people out on a charity hike with no ill intention towards anyone, murdered for no reason. Personally, I think it was a sexually motivated crime, but as stated, it wasn't possible to determine due to the level of decomposition. It seems like Randall being the fantasist and liar that he clearly was, struggled with forming a relationship with the opposite sex and got his kicks murdering and possibly sexually assaulting his victims, who knows how many more are buried on the trail. A great story with good factual narration and a positive end. 🇬🇧

He definitely had more victims. The way that he repaid acts of kindness with evil "out of nowhere" lets me know there's no doubt. He was older when he passed. He had a lot of time before/after prison to do his evil work.

In murder cases, it should always be up to the family members to approve plea deals. Obviously, it wouldn't work because 99% of the time a family isn't going to let a murderer plead down the crime. BUT it would be nice to give families some control in a powerless situation.
@thisisMONSTERS

Actually family members are quite often consulted about plea deals and frequently agree. The prosecutor explains to them why they're offering the plea deal and the difficulty they might face at a trial, so the family understands the possible benefit of the plea deal.
