It's not about smarts, it's about control. If there's no one alive to tell anyone what kind of a person you are, then you get to tell the story you want to tell. It's not a long-term planned out approach, it's just rote cowardice and stupidity.

@@0The_Farlander0 there’s another episode on this channel about a guy who conned people for years, just constantly. I can’t remember the name. And the weird part about it was he never looked at the long term consequences of his lying. He just saw it as solving that days problem. If you look at Chandlers behavior, it makes more sense if you look at it in that context. He never saw his actions beyond solving the immediate problem in front of him. He seems incapable of long term planning.

It's kind of mind-boggling to realize that dismembering and disposing of his parents' bodies was the hardest this idiot ever worked in his pathetic life. If you watch her on the stand, she explains to the attorney how they had been dating for a while, had plans to move to Florida, were shopping for houses, planning on getting married... and her eyes sorta glass over for a second and she almost seems to shake herself out of it and force herself to keep going. Her entire life was planned around getting married to a wonderful guy with a loving family and live the dream in the Space X community in Florida. Not only was that not happening, it had all been a lie from the start, and the man she loved had killed his own parents and dismembered them. I’ve watched everything there is on this case. I have a theory that there was always something different about Chandler and his parents “helped” him a lot. He was an Eagle Scout . His parents likely made that happen by pushing him, making sure he was where he needed to be when he needed to be there, setting up opportunities for him , over helping with the projects to make sure they got done . I think this went on his entire life. This is just my gut feeling but I could be wrong. I think they were so relieved he was in college and employed that they ignored the red flags. They weren’t stupid people. Bart was in a senior position at BDO, a huge national/international accounting firm. Because the trial happened so fast , just 6 or 7 months after the murders, we never got to learn more about Chandler’s history . What was he like growing up , as a teen? How did he do in high school? Why did his parents fall for all of his lies? It went on for so long!! There’s an interesting backstory here , that we may never get to know about. What I’m sure of is, he didn’t become a cold hearted killer who was able to cut his parents up and burn their heads in the fireplace, in one day.

Some of these cases get worn out through so much content but this had SO much more that helped build the suspicion against Chandler. Fantastic job!
I like the order you did this. Most channels that have covered the case start with Chandler's deceit about his schooling and the chain reaction that caused. Basically chronological order. This was more effective, covering first the disappearance, then Chandler's stories not adding up... followed by the crime itself and also the big motive behind it all.
Almost skipped this one because I thought I knew the case from watching other channels. Glad I didn’t! You do such a great job of telling the story in a way that it seems new.

Wisconsin’s own Grant Amato. Jeebus. Wow. Well done, Monsters. This is the best summarization of what this idiot did to his family. All because he was too lazy to make something of himself. That phone call between the college registrars office and Bart was heartbreaking. You can tell Bart is abrasive at first because he truly cannot believe it’s his son who lied. You can hear in his voice how he’s grasping for anything to prove it’s the college… then he lets go of all pretense and you can hear how much less combative he sounds. The parallels between the Halderson’s and the Amato’s is striking. Both families truly cared about their kids. Both had one kid who excelled and another who dragged his feet. The only difference was that Chaz had Cat - a real girlfriend who was also strung along.

I followed this case from the start and even then Chandler was suspicious AF. I feel so bad for Mitchell, he lost his parents and brother at the same time. There's nothing wrong with his parents-they were loving and supportive. He made so much effort in covering up his lies when he could have just gone to school and get a job like his brother, Mitchell. He was never remorseful and he just wanted to laze around doing nothing. It's a parent's job to monitor their kids while they're under their roof, Chandler is just a lazy POS who didn't want to leave home but also won't follow their rules. My parents were very strict with me and my siblings growing up as they wanted us to take our studies seriously, finish our degree, get a job and leave home which we all did. If being strict and fussy with their kids is a justification for murder then millions would be gone. Chandler is an entitled psychopath who didn't want to work but expected his parents to put up with him and his lies. He deserves to rot in prison.

Totally agree. Chandler is a psychopath. He hits so many of the behaviours and traits: Detached, cold and callous demeanor (flat affect), pathological lying, exaggerations and deceitfulness, lack of empathy, remorselessness, impulsivity, parasitic, superficial and shallow, unaffected and unafraid of consequences, blame shifting/lack of accountability, disregard for rules, laws and social norms, lack of conscience, abnormal ways of thinking, easily bored/low attention span and loss of interest, sense of grandiosity and entitlement, additionally many psychopaths have a capacity for cruelty and violence. What a gem. Most research now supports that Psychopaths are BORN, not made. His parents had no idea there was a ticking time bomb in their home. RIP Bart and Krista Halderson. Prayers to Mitchell and so sorry for your incredible loss.

Well said! I was a screw up too. My parents held me accountable and now I'm a responsible adult with my own family. My sister in law is a screw up who's always been coddled. Her mother always lets her move back in with her rent free. She hoards up the house, refuses to work, gets drunk all day, refuses to interact with (or even feed) her kids, and is very rude. She calls the police on everyone, including her family when she gets out-of-control angry. No one held her accountable- not even the police. They don't seem to care that she keeps wasting their time. Luckily she ran off with some loser and no one has seen her in months. She's 35 by the way. I hope her kids are okay and not around random men at drunken parties, but there's nothing I can do about it. TL;DR: fellow parents, do not coddle your screw up your kid. It will only make them worse. If your child seems unusually callous and lazy, seek professional help. Those red flags combined can signal danger.
I've been horrified yet fascinated by this case for some time, particularly since it's the more recent in a string of familicides committed by young men who were pushed to quit mooching off their parents. You've done a great job at bringing several aspects of the interrogation to light that others haven't considered. This seems to be the original interrogation footage too rather than the recording of the playback during the trial. How'd you get ahold of it? Did you submit a FOIA request, was it recently publicly published, etc.?
Everytime i hear about this case, i have to ask myself, if he ever applied himself this deeply to studies or a work ethic as opposed to all these immense lies, would he be intensely successful in anything he tried to do? Its common in americ bro. Nothing new
He not only destroyed his parents’ lives but also his brother’s and his fiancée’s, Cat’s and the dreams she had built, Cress and Dulce’s memories of their beloved property, all because he was a lazy incompetent mouth breather.
I’ve heard this story multiple times before but this is the best version of it also with the most information I’ve heard especially with that phone call with Bert and the school rep. Great job

Honestly i found Matt Orchards version better. for one he didn't shit on the chosen defense the public defender used because he understood that the PD was working with literally less then nothing and yet are still required by law to give the best defense possible. Like, imagine yourself in those shoes, you are given this case, with all that evidence stacked against to, and yet you don't come up with the strongest defense possible, you could permanently lose your job.

Love Monsters, but the best way this story is told is the hour long Prosocution Opening Statements

@DillKosher, Ya, Bert was a little miffed I think after talking to that dude at the school. I was wondering where he got the money for the Ice?, I mean if he was that broke, I hope his parents didn't pay for the Ice too. I would be willing to bet after he killed them he took one of their credit or debit cards out of their wallet and payed for all that shit with their money. they bought their own Ice for their cold burial.
I watched the whole trial of this disgusting POS and the prosecutor in this was one of the best prosecutors I’ve ever seen in any trial! His defense was such a joke. Those poor lawyers were way in over their heads
