In Ireland Diesel is actually black and petrol (gas) is green. Funny how things differ completely across an ocean

My dad's a rally driver and former mechanic, and I once accidentally put a little bit of petrol (gasoline) in my diesel car. I realised my mistake and continued with diesel. My dad says that you can get away with this in a diesel car, but diesel in a petrol engine will ruin it. This is why the nozzle in a diesel pump is too thick to fit in a petrol engine.

Father Ted contained a lot of hidden references to other shows. I don't know if South Park was around before Father Ted but for me there are parallels with Father Larry Duff constantly on the receiving end of extreme events and Kenny getting killed in every episode only to re-appear in the next. Very funny.

Love the channel guys. Before you get to episode “the mainland” in series 3 I recommend doing some light research into the show one foot in the grave and the main character victor meldrew. It will add context. But also it’s a great classic UK sitcom from the 90s. Do more Vic and Bob. Also do a deep dive into the late uk comedy legend that was Sir Ken Dodd OBE.

Hi guys, enjoying your journey through one of the funniest sitcoms ever made. Can't help but notice behind you a card with the Young Ones. That was a sitcom in 1982-84 about four students sharing a house and was made here in Bristol. Its mad, anarchic and surreal....you'll love it. It features Ade Edmondson & the late Rik Mayall who were a double act anyway, they later went on to do the sitcom 'Bottom', which is very funny too. The Young Ones ran for only 12 episodes and some of the references have dated a bit since they referred to the Thatcherite politics of the day, but it remains a firm favourite. It featured up & coming comedy talent of the time, people like Jennifer Saunders & Dawn French (Ab Fab), Hale & Pace, Ben Elton, Stephen Fry and even Python Terry Jones did a cameo. Check it out, I think you might like its lunacy.

Allow me to clear up the diesel/petrol mix up debate, I literally fix it for a living 😂 So obviously neither can run on the wrong fuel but you only risk doing damage if you drive a long distance in a diesel vehicle that has a mix of both fuels but is more rich in petrol. I’m yet to witness a vehicle that’s irreparably damaged by the wrong fuel in the near 3 years I’ve been fixing wrong fuel and 9 years I’ve been a mechanic. What I do with a common European diesel car is drain the tank with a weighted and braided tube, disconnect the fuel line running from the filter to the high pressure pump, drain the fuel line up to there, put fresh diesel in and bleed it back through up to the high pressure pump. It usually takes a few turns of the key and some pumping of the gas pedal but they burst into life and once the mixed fuel has cleared from the injector rail they run smoothly again. Usually recommend getting a full tank of premium diesel and keeping the tank above half full for a couple of weeks just to make sure any small amounts of petrol that remain are diluted by the diesel. For petrol cars filled with diesel, it is less common since most petrol cars in the UK and Europe have restrictors preventing the wider diesel nozzle going in, it’s much the same process unless the car has been run. I usually have to take out the spark plugs, clean them, spray a little brake cleaner in the top of the bores to try and soak up some diesel and provide an ignitable gas, spray some carb cleaner in the air intake and turn it over. Depending how far they have driven or tried to start it after it has cut out determines how long a petrol misfuel job takes really. If they’ve been sensible and stopped as soon as the car started running rough and not tried to restart it, they usually jump straight into life once the fuel has been replaced, sometimes even without having to take out the spark plugs! If it’s been driven a while and they’ve been trying to start it then it can take a while as I have to keep taking out the plugs, cleaning them and trying it again. Eventually they start though, usually with quite a bit of smoke as the diesel gets hot in the catalytic converter and exhaust! But now you know, if you do it there are people who can fix it, best case though is if you realise you’ve put the wrong fuel in before you start the car, call someone then and there and don’t start the car if at all possible! That saves any under bonnet work and doesn’t risk doing any damage to the engine!

  • @rogergill1969

It is far worse to put petrol in a diesel engine than the other way round. Petrol will cause a huge amount of damage. Indeed, my sister put unleaded petrol in a new diesel Range Rover, £25k for a new engine. Diesel in a petrol engine you may get away with a full system flush etc.

  • @Cobalt-Jester

You have it backwards. Petrol in a Diesel car is a lot worse than Diesel in a petrol car. Diesel acts as a lubricant as well as a fuel. If petrol in added into a tank that alreave has diesel in it then the petrol acts as a solvent and removes the lubrication properties on the Diesel fuel. This can cause a lot of damage. Diesel in a petrol car is not so bad. It might even keep running for a while but it will eventually start misfireing and splutter to a halt as the spark plugs get really covered a soot like built up. If you put £10 of diesel in your petrol can then just put in £10 or more of petrol this 50/50 or more diluted diesel mix should be ok and your car might be a little sluggish but there should be no serious long term problems. But you might want to change your sparks plugs at some stage when you think all the diesel has gone through. Like I said it's petrol in diesel cars that's really bad.

14:25 on older engines you might get away with using the wrong fuel in them provided you flush the system well with the right fuel. There was a thing with older diesel engines where you could use around a litre or maybe even a quarter tank of petrol to thin down diesel in winter when it turned thick and waxy in cold temperatures to make it flow better, although I wouldn't want to try it on a modern diesel engine (eg. a Honda i-CDTi or DTEC and others) as it might do a load of very expensive damage. My dad once accidentally filled up a Citroen 2cv with diesel instead of petrol and after draining the fuel tank and then refilling and running fresh petrol though it, it ran fine after that, but that's an older carburettor engine - it'll most likely damage the fuel injection system and other engine management systems, filters and whatnot on modern petrol engines if you put diesel in them. There is a Fifth Gear video where they filled cars with the wrong fuel to demonstrate what happens.

Diesel cars use the diesel as a lubricant for the pump and high pressure fuel rail. Using petrol will not lubricate and will do thousands of pounds of damage in seconds. The entire fuel system from tank to injectors will need stripping down and replacing. And thats if you’re lucky, worst new fuel system and engine.

You can put diesel into a petrol car and it will run if mixed with petrol. It will be a little Smokey though but won't cause serious damage. You cannot put petrol into a diesel engine as a diesel engine has a higher compression rate and petrol is extremely powerfull. The end result won't be good for a diesel engine.
