The trick with a lot of our comedy is to try not to over-analyse it too deeply. "Rats! Hairy Japanese bastards" is funny just because it's a funny line in its own right.
I *KNEW* you'd laugh your arse off when Jack mentioned the "rats" :)
13:45 fun Easter egg: Tom tries a sledgehammer, then a baseball bat, then a chainsaw, then finally chooses a sword. Same weapons and in the same order as Butch in Pulp Fiction when he’s deciding what to take back downstairs in the pawn shop in *that* scene

My friends and I had been smoking a little Mary Jane's before watching this episode back when it was on TV here in England, and it was a struggle to get off the floor after Jack's "Hairy Japanese B'stards!" outburst. Hysterics is an understatement. I still don't know if we've fully recovered 25+ years later.
I find it amazing that Pauline McLynn (Mrs Doyle) was just over 30 when filming these and they have her pretty convincingly looking a load older without her looking ridiculous.

Great timing to have the rabbits episode up on the Easter weekend! 😀🐰🍫🐣 Apparently there were some complaints about the "hairy Japanese bastards" line, because some people thought it sounded racist; but it was never intended to be more than a senseless non-sequitur, in keeping with the show's surreal nature. I agree that this episode is more wacky than usual - not least because the rabbits are able to get themselves around to any part of the house, without any assistance and without being noticed by anyone! 🐰🐰 And yes, Tom is the same maniac who covered them in shit from the tanker in the caravan episode! Next time on _Father Ted:_ Jack gets a new look, Dougal learns some new rules...and Ted must deal with an extremist on Craggy Island!

And the Catholic church was outraged by the portrayal of Bishop Brennan in the bath with a woman.
Rabbits make wonderful pets, if looked after properly. We had indoor bunnies. The first one we got when he was 8 weeks old. He lived until he was 10. The vet told us he was a she, so we called him Daisy. At around 5 months old, little dangly things appeared, so had to renamed Dessie, so as not to confuse her/him! Shortly after that my Mum rang me to tell me that my sister had a new boyfriend. Guess what his name was?! Bunny Dessie was such a character and still missed over a decade on.
Watch the one where Jack gets sober and the one where Jack gets a pet brick both very funny.

Hi I worked for a company in the UK surveying cell phone sites for upgrade. I was in the north west of England and I arrived on a site at about 6AM and the whole place was covered in wild rabbits and they were not afraid of me and just keep on eating as I walked through them. There was at least 50 plus.
Bishop Brennan was modelled on a genuine Irish bishop who fathered a son etc etc. The series parodied the catholic church and highlighted the hypocrisy with bishops in hottubs with women whilst drinking champagne from gold plated glasses while priests were forced to live "celibate" lifestyles and abusing the odd alterboy
ive been waiting for you to see Jacks "rats" rant. lol, classic.
"New baby new baby, watcha gonna do today new baby".
Father Larry Duff scene cut out, for anyone that doesn't know, Larry was offered to take the rabbits, as it was his all time fantasy to have rabbits running his house. However, he decided on 12 rottweilers instead and gets attacked by them!

there is a documantary on the series and some actors and writers get together talking about the series and how it happened.
Had the same thing with my rabbit and the school's one we looked after over a holiday whenI was a kid. They were "together" for a split second before being whipped apart by my parents, but still she ended up having 6 babies!
That reminds me of the time I was in school & the teacher asked why I didn't bring any other them lovely raisins in, I replied "sorry miss, the rabbit died"
The Japanese reference is to do with the misguided but much employed 'buck teeth' representation of the Japanese - especially in WWII propaganda, so rats having prominent incisors....

Ireland is broken into Northern Ireland (which is part of the UK) and the Republic of Ireland (which as the name would suggest is a republic and part of the EU). Thought i would mention that in case someone hadn't already in the comments.

Awww, I love you two, I really do! You are both completely AWESOME! :) So, here's a slightly awkward cuddle coming at the pair o' yez: **CUDDLE!!**
Got a rabbit as a teenager and was assured it was male. One day my little brother came in and shouted there were baby pigs all over the garden. The male rabbit gave birth to half a dozen rabbits. 😅
Queen Boomers song at the beginning is the perfect intro.
This is fast becoming my favourite channel
Uk shows are short as we dont get writers in to fluff the episodes. Often great short and sweet!
So hilarious love this episode thank you so much for this ❤
"Flipper sounds like a fun guy" is a much more meta joke than you think. A dolphin named fungi famously stayed near the Irish coast for some 35 years.

Irish civilians and soldiers were persecuted by the Japanese too. I suggest you read 'A Doctors War' by Aidan McCartney. I don't know how this book hasn't been made into a film franchise.
Fun Fact: The actor who plays Tom, Patt Short, is the bartendender in The Bansees of Inisherrin.
Pat Shortt (Tom, the rabbit killer) has his own TV series called Killinaskully, and it is well worth a watch. He play multiple roles and nails it in every one.

I'm tellin' you, from the UK, Father Ted is credited in the press with being a main reason for the fact Ireland doesn't have anywhere near as many young men signing up to be Catholic priests, seriously! They'd never been mocked so much as this before. It's actually damaged the Catholic Church deeply. Which I think is the final, biggest joke of all! Mocking was needed. (I'm simply sad that co-writer Graham Lineham hasn't been able to find work or income since 2018, because he's been "cancelled" by the cancel culture over a joke he made in a later, different series which was regarded badly by trans activists. 😞 )
