R.I.P. Michael O'Hare (Babylon 5's Jeffrey Sinclair)
Ойын-сауық
From Babylon 5 Creator J. Michael Straczynski via his Facebook Page: "I regret that I must convey the sad news that Michael O'Hare passed away today. He suffered a heart attack on Sunday and was in a coma until his passing this afternoon. This is a terrible loss for all B5 fans and everyone involved with the show wishes to convey their condolences to the O'Hare family. He was an amazing man."

Agreed. Before I knew his story, I always felt something was going on with him, especially in his eyes. No more evident than on War Without End...on subsequent rewatches, I've grown to like Sinclair.

@@DazedN7 I totally agree. That two-parter looked like such a struggle for him. Especially when he was trying to be funny. But keeping this spoiler free, the way the two-parter ended truly makes him an integral part of the series and it's one of the best surprises in any show I've ever seen.
it's sad how many actors from this show are no longer with us.

It's not just some of the cast members who've passed on but some of the production crew are no longer with us. I saw an ''In memory of'' feature about Babylon 5 some time ago and it listed 21 members of both the cast AND the crew who were no longer alive. That was before Stephen Furst and Jerry Doyle had passed on.🙁🙁🙁

And now Mira.
I watched Babylon 5 back in the day when it first appeared on UK's channel 4.I just want to say that as a young man (early 20s) i began to look up to how Cmdr Sinclair behaved and acted as a person whether during a crisis on B5 or how he spoke both diplomatically and forcefully when needed. In short i clung to his ideals to this day and i thank you Mr O'Hare for instructing me on how to be a decent/moral/ human being.Thank you sir!

I feel you. I was in my 20's when some freinds kept pestering to watch that new show I thought was weird...Babylon 5. I did, and fell hard for it. What drew me in from the start was Cmmd. Jeffrey Sinclair. He was haunted, strong, diplomatic, looked after his staff, & and had a sense of humor. Yeah...I develop instant like for Mike O' Hares skills. Sinclair was everything you could hope for from a superior. I GREW to like Sheridan, but I always love Sinclair/Valen first. Michael O' Hare.....God rest your soul. You have so many fans that looked up to you, and pained for you when we found out how life was turning unfair for you.
So many lost from this most memorable series, the best Sci-Fi ever produced: Richard Biggs (Dr. Stephen Franklin) 2004 Tim Choate (Zathras) 2004 Andreas Katsulas (G;Kar) 2006 Jeff Conaway (Zack Allen) 2011 Michael O'Hare (Commander Sinclair) 2012 Robin Sachs (Na'Tok) 2013 Jerry Doyle (Garibaldi) 2016 Stephen Furst (Vir Cotto) 2017 Thank you for the memories. “Babylon 5: Objects in Motion (#5.20)” (1998) “We are all the sum of our tears. Too little and the ground is not fertile, and nothing can grow there. Too much, the best of us is washed away. “ “I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in the station when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we’ve exchanged. Long after we are gone, our voices will linger in these walls for as long as this place remains. But I will admit that the part of me that is going will very much miss the part of you that is staying.” “All my life I have been responsible only for myself. When I risked, I risked alone to avoid making others pay the price for my mistakes. They want me to show them another way. What if I show them the wrong way? What if they come to me not because of the lesson but because of the teacher? I worry, Ta’Lon, that my shadow may become greater than the message.” “But we can’t be free, until we learn to laugh at ourselves. Once you look in the mirror and see just how foolish we can be, laughter is inevitable. And from laughter comes wisdom.” ~G'Kar

TO THE FAMILY OF THIS MAN, thank you for sharing his life with all of us as a actor, he made a difference to my out look on life and the way I understand the world,! but to you he was a son, friend, father, and so much more that my limited understanding of the man cannot convey. All I know is that he was yours but he shared himself with everyone. BLESS and again thank you for sharing his life with all of us. x

+5554132 beautiful :) so true
His voice over for Season 1 and his gravitas really made that first season work...and of course, his Character had one of the best surprises in TV History... :)
I though Mr. O'Hare's performance on this show was first rate. He played a war veteran that was coping with PTSD - which is pretty common on TV - but his was underplayed, a softer approach of a veteran who tried not to let the trauma define him, yet he knew it was constantly there. I wanted to see this character continue...it was real to me. This man was a great actor. Sinjyn - Combat Vetran.
I grew up watching this man and having this ideal of a calm and wise commander with a rare but warm smile. May his soul rest in peace.
What I find incredibly sad that with all the skill he had, with all the friends looking out for him and a family to be there for him, he ended up in a Halfway Home. Mental Illness is just that.. an Illness that society in general dosnt want to understand because generally there are no missing arms or legs or visible signs. But it can affect all of us.

the sad part is i believe he stopped taking his medicine. i suffer from depression/anxiety/panic disorder and no matter how good i feel i still take my medicine. some of the side effects of the medicine include weight gain so one must watch their diet.
I remember when the second season started an I found out that Mr. O'Hare wasn't returning. I was so angry because I thought the suits at the network wanted an action oriented character rather than the Sinclair character who was so reflective, yet strong and a very different type of hero. Now I know what the real issue was. God bless his soul.
We will miss Commander Sinclair. Inspiring actor and his sudden disappearance from the show.. B5 was never the same without him.
One of my favorite's characters in B5. Rest in peace Michael. You will be not forgotten.

Rest in peace, Mr. O'Hare. Thank you for everything. :( "Still...it's been a good life...lives...over all. Delenn, Catherine, Susan, Michael....if any of you see this somehow....don't cry for me. R.I.P., Michael, and thank you for this very important Babylon 5 speech. Let's all go to the stars and yet still do everything we can for our beloved Mother Earth. 🌎🌏🌍🌌💓
Darn - I was gutted when he wasn't in episode 1 of series 2.
He was marvel of a man, both Michael O'Hare amd his character Jeffrey Sinclair.
They nailed it when cast him in Babylon 5 ...
I will always remeber Jeffrey Sinclair ...............great actor , great role. Goodbye old friend
Great series. So many lost, so young. Who downvotes this? Shadows?
Rip he was a terrific actor i really loved season 1 he was a great commander the best its really tragic that he suffered soo much at least hes resting now but it really does suck especially considering most of the cast from this show are dead byt thats life short and cruel
For me, this was the best line in the entire B5 saga
He was one of my favorites on B5, was so sad when he left the show, even sadder now...
I, too, have only just heard. There is nothing more I can add to all that's written here. I agree completely with the sadness of his passing. RIP Michael
JMS has to be one of the greatest writers of the 20th century.
RIP Michael O'Hare (May 6, 1952 - September 28, 2012), aged 60 You will be remembered as a legend
Sinclair was always my favorite character on the show, a show that had a lot of great characters. Thanks for putting this scene up in tribute to Mr. O'Hare. I really miss him, especially that quiet noble voice of his. My best friend and I did a tribute to him to celebrate his return to B5 to finish off his story arch. You can see it in the link below. I hope you enjoy it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/k62Tqq6lmMfOoNo.html
A perfect piece of casting.
I enjoyed his acting and only wish we had him with us still. RIP
We will miss you Michael, til we meet again or "be seeing you." RIP
This is sad... He was such an great Actor and one of my Heros in my Childhood. Rest in Peace, and best wishes to his Family
Having watched this show as a teen i was drawn in its world and became a fan. When mr O'Hare was replaced i was shocked-his acting and presence gave class and authority to the story. For two decades i wondered what had happened for him to be replaced,im not kidding.Conspiracy theories flew left and right between fans. When i saw the video from Phoenix Comic con and heard JMS explain it all i was shocked and saddened.I just hope that he has found the rest and peace that was denied him while alive.

JMS gave him a great tribute.
May I also say that he was perfectly cast as Commander Sinclair, and as a fan of the first three seasons of B5, I was very disappointed, even flabbergased when he didn't return the next season. I very muched missed him when he left, and one of my favorite episodes was when he returned for season 3. May I say he had a good presents when he entered a room and maybe, not just the charactors he played but Michael himself, that was the kind of person he was.
I didn't know this great man died the year my youngest was born, I didn't know that he had lot of struggles. But one thing is I will never forget the one! R.I.P Michael O'Hare
He was an amazing actor in B-5, The perfect guy for an amazing role,we miss Michael RIP..
What a voice
It;s very sad news to hear of Michael O' Hares death, his character of Sinclair was one of my favorites on Babylon 5, I always thought his portayal was that of the quinticential Commander, calm, wise, with the skills to deal with any situation and with a voice of quiet authority. After seeing his performance as Sinclair I spent time to seek out his other performances in other shows and media. All I have to say is one of his lines that use in my own life from time to time, "Goodbye old friend".
I wish that he found peace I love the guy and miss him he was great
Another hero... from my favorite show.... :( RIP
Beautiful film, loved him and the greatest show ever and now that we know what happened, it is all the more meaningful and poignant.
I remember him in 'by any means necessary', sorting out multiple problems in one episode, at the same time near enough!!. Brilliantly played by Michael O'Hare. Favourite episode season one
The struggle is worth it. Always. Thank you.
Out of all the deaths of the B5 cast, I think O'Hare's is the saddest. As a person who suffers from mental illness myself, I can really appreciate the sacrifices those around him made, and I'm glad he told people to tell his secret after he passed. Anyway, we need more PRACTICAL research on mental health, and we need to quit calling normal things like depression mental illness. The state of mental health care is such that, in most cases, you are better off if those fucking quacks leave you alone. Any person who calls him or herself a "psychiatrist" or worse a "psychologist" should not be trusted.

Ironically, I think B5 has shown the amazing courage of so many. O'Hare insisted that "The show must go on", for 'the so many others' who were unawares of what he was going through. Richard was deaf, it was amazing the technical jargon and species names he needed to deal with, PLUS knowing everyone else's lines. And he seemed so natural in his performance. Jeff Conaway insisting on "one line", even though the producers all knew he was worthy of more, as he was dealing with his own frailties. And then the relationship of Peter and Andreas, reminding us of a similar relationship between Spock and McCoy from Star Trek. Two proud ambassadors, moving their agenda forward, respecting each other.

the guy was a hero. he stayed on the show through this troubled time in his life so the other actors would not lose their jobs. some of the other cast members were not nice to him.
Goodbye old friend :(
JMS had "trapdoors" built in to every character's story so they could be taken out of the action without it affecting the story. It was actually Michael O'Hare's decision to leave the show, but they worked in the Ranger One/Valen angle as a way to have him still have a part to play in the larger saga.
I just stumbled across this...I was completely unaware that Mr. O'Hare passed away. It deeply grieves me not only because I enjoyed his performance as Sinclair but also, he passed away on my late father's birthday, September 28. I hope he has found peace in God's grace.
Djbigben...We loved your dad and B5 would never have been such a hit without his sweet and gentle spirit. Thanks for sharing him with the fans!
I have just read this very sad news. A true gentlemen who brought dignity and authority to his role as Jeffrey Sinclair in what was, one of the greatest TV shows ever.
This is exactly what I have in mind when I look at the night sky. It's not only about us. It's about every beautiful thing the humankind achieved, it must perserve. It's our destiny, our purpose to reach the stars. Otherwise, it's all about nothing. BTW - these are the moments where Babylon 5 beats Star Trek.
He was a great actor and we were privileged to partake in some of his skill and light while he was in this life.
Goodbye old friend, also pay my respects to Koch.

I knew he had died. But this made me sad all over again. So many people from this show that I loved are no longer with us. RIP all of you. :(
Although I consider myself a great fan of the series, I did not learn of Mr. O'Hare's passing until today..more than three months after the fact. My sincerest condolences to all of Michael's family, friends and colleagues.
Thank you Michael for all you did and all you stood for..also winning a prize from NAACP for your work--RIP...Insil'zha veni..in Valen's name...God speed you to your rest...
I never got why Michael got so much stick for his performance. He absolutely wasn't a wooden actor, I do think that Sinclair was written to be rather uptight and stoic, so he played him the way he was written. The few times he got to show Sinclair in a more human light (like this moment here) he played him as somebody who was still in awe of the wonders of the universe. I also remember the time he and Garibaldi pranked Ivanova into thinking she's slept through breakfast. Dude did have a sense of humour!

How very sad I am to read this! I always looked to Michael as the leading force for Babylon 5 and one of the main reasons for creating a website dedicated to Babylon 5. I am still working on this so will not put the url yet, but I will put a page on it to honor him, as I have done for Andreas, Richard and Jeff. So many gone way to soon. RIP and condolences to Michael's family and friends! RP
Your father was part of a series that was and is inspirational. The character he represented could only be portrayed if your father had that level of integrity within himself. He has inspired me to try a little everyday to be a little better, a little more, and to beat back a little bit of the darkness of the world so more light shines all over. I too lost my father and know it will take time to heal, to cry, to move on, but know he is out there somewhere loving you and protecting you.
sincere condolences and may your memories bring you continual comfort
A terrible loss to all, he can never be replaced.
I miss your father too. Especially in his role as Captain Sinclair, a warm hearted good man but a tough, decisive general when need to be. Yet still be someone who could resolve a dispute through an non-violent compromise.

@djbigben54 You're welcome and thank you for your kind remarks. Your father's performance in this TV series had an uniquely powerful impact on me. He was and still is a comforting presence in my life whenever I watch him act. I am deeply saddened by his passing and grateful that so many of his fans could express their feelings and condolences to you as we mourn his death and celebrate his life together.
Life is like a candle in the wind.
It's take me MONTHS as a fan of B5's to come to grips with the passing (Physically) of an Icon. But when i feel the bite of Loss; I hear Nira's Voice reminding me; the very thing that makes up our bodies, comes from the Stars. We are starstuff. In another way friends. everything IS energy; from the stars to the food we eat to the liquids we drink, all is energy. even the varying pattern of souls are energy, AND ENERGY NEVER TRUELY DIES.......It just moves On.
The only thing more appropriate than this clip is adding the end of "Deconstruction of Falling Stars" right at the end of it....
This is why we need to go to the stars. Not to exploit some other place, it’s survival. If your house was going to fall down you’d have to move out, and one day we will need to leave behind the wonderful world.
