What Happened to Babylon 5 (1993-98)?

Ойын-сауық

Have you ever had a friend who just won't shut up about a show or movie? You know, the one they say things like, "Oh, you like The Matrix, well Dark City is such a superior film," or "You know, you really don't know TV unless you see The Wire.” Most of the time, they were right, but they are so obnoxious about it that it makes you want to not watch anything they’re talking about. This happened to me with Babylon 5. Because of this person, I avoided this show for 30 years. Over the years I kept thinking, maybe I should check this show out. But it was intimidating, this series is on a whole other level. They are websites devoted to what the best order is to watch it. I have been wanting to dive in and cover Babylon 5 for a while now. So why don’t we do a cannonball and watch one of the most important science fiction series of the 90s and whether or not it was a game changer in the science fiction genre in this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten?

One thing I feel has to be said: Lennier’s betrayal at the end of “Objects at Rest” most assuredly does NOT come out of nowhere. It is foreshadowed as early as Season 2, it is a major feature of a number of episodes in Seasons 3 and 4, and is built up directly through every single Lennier episode in Season 5. I get why people don’t like how Lennier ends up, since he is such a wonderful character (and Bill Mumy was so terrific playing him), but Lennier’s temporary “indiscretion” had to happen-as more than three full seasons of the show make abundantly clear.

Agreed on that point. It is obvious that Lennier develops a very unhealthy obsession with Delenn.

@Malagraves Yes, but more than that, he doesn't have the tools to deal with it. He approaches it the same way he does everything, viewing it through the lens of his personal piety, and tries to solve the problem by putting himself above it--which ultimately makes the problem far worse rather than better. He doesn't understand that pretending to be better than his feelings is just another kind of running away. This was set up as a key part of Lennier's character a bare minimum of three years before "Objects at Rest," and, depending on how you look at it, maybe even before that.

Thought you should know JMS gave you a shout out on Twitter and linked over to this. Nice work, and as someone who's had a shadow vessel tattooed on my left arm for 25ish years, I liked your retrospective. Been on a binge rewatching the DVD box sets recently and loving it.

Actually G'Kar was never power hungry, nor particularly egotistical. He was mostly just angry, everything he did before his outward shift was always about his anger at the Centauri. It was never about power, that's why he said "as long as my people are safe, nothing else matter". If he was about power, his respond to Morden would have been very different. Also, Lennier's fate was not a twist, it was build up from the start (not build over a couple of episode). It's was the main reason I didn't like his character. His repressed, unrequited love was so obvious from the start and it tainted all the decisions he made, I already consider a betrayal a strong possibility by season 5. As some people pointed out, JMS doesn't subvert expectations, he fulfill expectations, building towards it. It fit his character. That is also not the 'Telepath War', just a prelude.

Star Trek had better battles because, as JMS put it, "The Voyager pilot is $23 million. With $23 million, we could make 1.3 SEASONS of B5. And have a bit of money left over for a wrap party". B5's per episode budget was around $800,000. DS9 got double that. Space: Above and Beyond got $2 million. Yes, the effects are clunky, especially early on. It's a lot easier to see today on nice, clear HD TV screens and flat-screen monitors; on a CRT in the 90s, the flaws weren't quite as apparent.

A HD version was released a few years ago. It's not widescreen but it is higher quality.

Really good video, really enjoyed it. I miss B5's universe... Also Crusade was not "too bad" but I found it hard to get into it as all of a sudden there's a plague on earth? whai... what ? How? The introduction could've spend a bit more time before sending the Excalibur on the quest... I read somewhere that was only part of the show, there was supposed to be other things around the corner for that crew. Sad we never got it. B5 season one was a bit iffy to me and it's really from S2 onwards that I was glued to my screen. I figured the same would happen with Crusade. Oh well. Really looking forward to that new series, as we're not getting any younger and other established Science-Fiction IPs mostly went to crap, or seem to be forgotten. If done properly, this is a prime time for a good series to pop back up 🙂

The whole CGI argument basically comes down to either having good space battles with a lot going on with a smaller budget or the utterly tedious Star Trek swoopy ships and not much happening battles. I imagine the later seasons of DS9 probably took inspiration from B5 to make the Dominion War battles better to watch and they had a bigger budget to work with.

Other things to remember, the CGI was state of the art for the time, being animated on chain linked Amigas, and like the live action sequences, was meant to be produced in widescreen. The cost of the widescreen monitor was deemed prohibitive, even though it could have been defrayed among many episodes. This wasn't so bad for the initial transmissions, which was in standard definition, but for release on video, all scenes with CGI were manipulated to be widescreen, which meant they were somewhat degraded. These masters were the ones used for all subsequent releases, until the remastering a few yew ago. Also, they were in the PAL video format, which obviously needed to be converted to the other formats around the world. The remastered version is much better quality than what has been released before, though sadly not what was envisioned.

While I love DS9 as a avid Trecki. B5 is just great ans belongs to my most favorite shows ever. I would love to see a remaster with redone CGI or even a complete reboot to allow JMS to really get the 5 year arc done without the struggle between S4 and S5. Always happy to see some acknowledgment today 😊 . Great, now the next rewatch is in order.

The Centauri emperors were partly at least, based on the Roman emperors, most obviously Cartagia being Caligula. The BBC adaptation of I, Claudius is really very good.

You missed out. The end of B5 is right up there with season 3 & 4. Yes it does take a lot of trudging to get there unfortunately.
