You absolutely accomplished the spirit of the challenge - you read a significant chunk of books that you own, reset and reevaluated your buying habit and you can come back to the challenge anytime you think your buying is getting out of hand. I always have a yearly goal to ' read more of the books I own' which means I have to be intentional about it without being locked in. I am tagging books as library or owned on goodreads and in my reading journal so I can keep better track of how I am doing. Also I have stopped impulse buying kindle books (even if they are on sale for next to nothing) because I rarely go back and read them since they are out of sight.

I have many books on my Kindle that I also bought on a daily deal that remain unread too. I wish I enjoyed e-books more but I just don’t. It’s mainly for my bedtime reading only. I will obtain one if I have a Kindle credit I need to use though. I mark my Goodreads like that too(own, library,Netgalley, etc). I had started a notebook for the challenge and will continue to fill it out for my pre-2024 books owned vs. ones purchased this year and do an evaluation at the end of the year.

@@thepapertraveler1122 I am tempted to make a spreadsheet for my unread physical and e-books......but that would be time consuming and probably really just a way of procrastinating doing something else 🤣

You inspired me to do the challenge but adapt it to own goals. So I feel a bit sad, because I wanted you to success in this challenge. But even though, I follow the idea that I have to push myself a bit more if I want to reach some goals, I also acknowledge the fact that reading is a hobby, a passion and it must be done for enjoyment, so it doesn't have to be that strict. I do appreciate that you will continue your low budge goal for the year, and of course I hope you enjoy those books, that I feel want to read them too, not because of the tv series, but because they look intriguing. Don't worry, I will continue my challenge in your name hehehe.

I’ll be cheering you on too! I have a notebook numbered to 100,of books I’m reading of my own and will continue to fill this out until my original goal is met while also keeping track of what I’m bringing in that’s new. It had gotten to a point where it was very unbalanced so I’m hoping to tip the scales heavily in the read what I owned previously more so than bringing in. I want to buy books but not have those crazy huge hauls, lol!

Any challenge that helps us evaluate what we are doing is a win for me. And what you said about being excited about reading a new book really resonated with me. That's what book buying should be, though we can all fall into the trap of retail therapy.

I must make a confession…since recording this I’ve made a few more unplanned purchases, but not overly so, and with intentions of going ahead and reading them still instead of shelf sitting. I can’t say I’ve not been highly tempted by others though. It’s tough being a book nerd!

I remodeled the challenge for myself this year and am only allowing myself to buy books every other month. I've learned from the challenge that I brought way too many books home and wanted to slow it down but still allow myself to buy some books through the year.

That’s an excellent plan and definitely more realistic. I think I was feeling guilty about having so many unread, I was trying to take the all or nothing approach and being a book lover, I think you need to allow yourself a little something from time to time while still reading the bookshelves.

I have my hand raised over here in the back hollering HEY GIRL HEY....lol I am guilty and honestly it had gotten WAY out of hand for me. Buying books because they sound good or look good and putting them on my shelf and never actually reading them. I am a mood reader so it may be a year before I feel the need to read certain books BUT I WANTED THEM ALL. I have over the last few months STOPPED lol now I ask myself are going to read this the day it hits the door or within the week? If not I am moving past the must have feels. Now if a week later I am still feeling the same I may purchase. GREAT video Kim and great insight. I appreciate you. 🥀

Hahaha, you made me laugh! It’s so tough and I feel we are alike in the mood reading and buying departments. It’s getting to the point that the kids are going to find me buried under a pile of books one day. Seriously though, the challenge helped me realize those key points but there was not a week that went by that I didn’t gander at those wonderful looking and sounding books out there and it helped me to go to my own shelves and remind myself of all the great ones I still need to venture into.😊📚

I think I had a case of Booktubeitis(being under the influence of wanting all the books) and the challenge let me take a step back and appreciate what I own and still want to read from my already owned books. I do hate that I gave up on the challenge but sometimes a gal needs to support her hobby a little😁.

I am trying to be mindful, but I would never want to do a no-buy. That said, I did recently unhaul about 10 bags of books that I bought new and knew I’d never read (and wasn’t even interested in any more). I like the idea of “breaking” bad shopping habits.

Gina, in the past I had no problem unhauling books I’m no longer interested in but now when I try to do that, I wind up taking them back out of the give away pile or have regrets of ones unhauled. I guess I’m a book hoarder! Actually though, I’m slowly trying to let go of a few things here and there and not bring in extra in general. It’s definitely freeing for the mind.

So far, it has helped thin out some of the stuff that has been sitting around for a long time. I am so particular that I won't buy a book if my library has it. lol I am cheap when it comes to buying books. ;p

I do not do any Reading Challenges at all I read what I want when I want to. I love reading my own books - Since 2010 I have read 182 of my own books. By the end of this year I will probably up that to 200 books of my own. I love going to the Library - I will not read a thick book from the Library - 100 Pages or less. I will not read a New Release book until a year later. This way you can renew the book if you are not done with the book. I have learn the tricks of checking out books from the Library. I will continue to buy the books I want to keep like Nancy Drew - Hardy Boys - Boxcar Children’s Mysteries - those kind of books. I do not read any Horror - YA Books. I mostly read Mysteries - Children’s Books - Some Fantasy - Light Romance Books. Take Care & Happy Reading ❤️🤗🔰📚📕📖☕️❤️

It’s weird the way our bookish brains work sometimes! I heard a story one time about a mom whose kids had too many toys they weren’t playing with so she took part of them and hid them away for a while and when she brought them out again, the kids felt like they were new and played with them. Maybe we need to do this with some of our books, lol!😊📚
