Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition | Proclamation 2015

Музыка

The proclamation of the 6 winners in the Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition of 2015. And as you'll see, a terrible mistake made by the jury.
--
Ji Young Lim has won the 2015 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium - this year devoted to the violin. She receives a
cash prize of €25,000, concert performancs and the loan of the ‘Huggins’ Stradivarius by the Nippon Music Foundation for
a period of four years.
The South Korean violinist received third prize at the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis last year and has
previously won prizes at the Montreal, Henri Marteau and Euroasia competitions.
Following six days of finals during which 12 candidates performed with the National Orchestra of Belgium conducted by
Marin Alsop, second prize went to Oleksii Semenenko from Ukraine, third prize to William Hagen from the US, fourth prize
to Tobias Feldmann from Germany, fifth prize to Stephen Waarts from the US and sixth prize to Fumika Mohri from Japan.
The remaining unranked finalists were Bomsori Kim, Ji Yoon Lee, Thomas Reif, Kenneth Renshaw, Xiao Wang and
William Ching-Yi Wei.
2014 Menuhin Competition winner Stephen Waarts also won the VRT-Prize and the Musiq’3 Prize of the RTBF, both voted for
by the public.

Sometimes "making it" depends on "breaks" more than on winning in a competition. I can't help but notice that Bomsori Kim is the most active (alright, famous) of them all now, 7 years after the competition.

Is participating in large competitions like this the only way to have a successful soloist career? If so, how does that even work?

@SeanHall-rz6rp competitions usually include a managent and sometimes recording contract a year. Let's face it, if a recital or concert will be marketed as that of the winner of so and so competition, it arouses interest Having said that, surely that's not the only way. Lang Lang, Yuja Wang, Kissin did not go through that route. I think at least the first 2, they went through the "substitute" pianist route, which are very very rare cases.

@@allandelacruz2589 Ah so I get it. Winning in competitions like this is usually a great help in starting up someone’s career. Also, what is the “substitute” pianist route?

@SeanHall-rz6rp it's when the pianist who will perform becomes unavailable at the last minute. Usually, because the pianist got sick. The producers then will look for a pianist who already knows the work to be performed as a substitute. The producers will get in touch with the top teachers because in all probability, the teacher's students have a wide repertoire. One such teacher is Gary Graffman who taught Langnlang and Yuja and Hao Chen Lim.

But...he clearly said Lim as the first name. Where is the mistake?

Yeah I heard Lim too. The audio on this video is pretty bad... it would've been even worse in person and possibly all that was heard by anyone at the time was "Li - Ji - Yi "....

Stephen played such a great Bartok 2. He should have been first or second but Queen Elisabeth is very much known for its politics... If you are American, studied at Curtis, with Aaron Rosand -- you are done...

Not just Curtis students of Aaron Rosand. The Galamian students in the late part of the 20th century also never had much success here. In general Americans do not do well in Brussels. The last American to win was Berl Senofsky in the mid-fifties. The Q.E is indeed very political, almost as much so as the Chopin in Warsaw. One thing almost always holds true in all competitions, but particularly in these two: the person who should have won 1st, never wins 2nd. He or she always gets 3rd. Pretty much the case here. But, let's wait and see after a few years, whose name do we see the most in concert halls.

In this competition they need to get it right - get another speaker that can speak right or have the students in the music hall so they can hear it right - so embarrassing
