I’m going to assume you mean that there should be rewards only for a select few/best. This is based on the idea that this fair, merit-based award for a select few promotes productive practice. While extrinsic rewards can be a part of their motivation, I don’t think it should be the only reason they play. That tends not to be sustainably enjoyable or productive for the vast majority. I am surprised you would say that this kind of external reward is the only reason to keep practicing. Indeed, if you apply this mentality fully to any facet of life, even work life, it becomes quite depressing. Also, I don’t see this kind of reward system as a fair or merit-based. It’s a winner-take-all scenario. There are many cases where a very competitive event has multiple levels of rewards, top prize, second place prize, all the way down. This helps make performing much fairer, rewards are based off performance, not to mention it makes it financially sustainable.

@@binabina4445 I think there are plenty of reasons why you would want to encourage participation and keep everyone feeling like a winner, and there are also situations where you would want a tiered reward system, where the best get the best rewards. Both have their place. I don’t think a (relatively harsh) winner-take-all system would be very nice for children for example. I think that’s almost never done, common sense. Maybe you have just seen many examples where performance isn’t good and rewards are given out to everyone, and you make the assumption that the poor performance is due to the reward scheme. In these cases, there are also other important factors to consider though, I don’t think we should jump to conclusions. In many cases, giving rewards to everyone is much more encouraging and fun, and may even be part of the process for building their interest in that activity. Again, context matters.

She probably needed own violin the most, it’s much less pressure when you are talking to a good friend and not to psychologist😂. I think it’s gonna help faster improving. Congrats!

Late to the party, but.. Sight reading is one thing (I know at my best, I probably still won’t ever be good enough), but playing by ear… and a piece so intricate…🤯 I’m in awe. (The only person I know who could play with a similar level of precision was my father.)
