    People may criticise Alex's world records for "not being legit" but no matter how many they invalidate, Alex still has a win-win situation in his hands. That is even the worst-case scenario. Joseph Saelee, Cheez, BlueScuti, Alex. The trend of young Tetris players breaching previously-cemented limits is going stronger than ever.

    18:57 "Eyes, wide, open!" You don't even need to be a fan of Tetris or competitive gaming (of which I am neither, so this is sound speaking) to appreciate how great this world of competitive Tetis is, thanks to the structure of this video. I absolutely love how the two top rivals, are more star-crossed best friends that are geographically stretched, rather than the aggressive stigma associated with the term, "rivals". Look at the one way the one champion pauses his game to check on his competition. Then has a giddy laugh of pride one has for a little brother, when his "eyes wide open" quote is rechanted. I just absolutely love it! 😁

I was impressed he could talk and play so well at the same time, and how he dealt with the poor visbility of charcoal and green. Feel like he shoukd have won more than $2.6k (or however much he won). Rolling is just drumming your fingers on the back of the controller. Instead of pushing the button on the front, you hover your finger over the button (dpad) and push the controller into the button by drumming your fingers on the controller. This is done because using 4 fingers instead of one is faster. Using the back of the controller is easier than trying to drum fingers over the dpad.

    I've heard people say that Mario 64's community, where many players only go for records to prevent specific other players from getting them, a good thing because it's "encouraging competition." This proves that's all nonsense. The healthiest community is the one where everyone is motivated to play and support each other, because it's the record that matters, not the person who gets it.

Truly a master of all arts, a mega master you could say. [UPDATE: 900 likes, how fun, so I give you guys yet another Alex Thach VC story. So I was doing a challenge where I spent one week in the CTM Discord vc, It was like day three or four of the challenge and it was me with like three other people. We moved like molasses in world record progression for decades. Starting from 2018 we worked our way up the ladder and the more recent world records have been quite crazy to say the least. But now the ground shakes, the CRTs switch off just before falling. The couches overturn. 2009 - 1 million 2016 - 1.2 million 2020 - 1.4 million 2024Q1 - 16 million. That's right, I removed the dot inbetween. It's that fucking impressive.

    the tetris competitive scene is a complete anomaly when it comes to esports. I've never seen a comp scene where it feels like people aren't competing against each other, but every competitor is spurring each other on to the ultimate goal of "beating" the game, where there aren't "winners" and "losers" in a tournament, the whole thing seems like a positive sum game that reinforces the absolutely fenominal community it has, with video games being adjacent to a lot of online abuse and negativity, to find something so against the grain when it comes to esport stereotypes puts faith in humanity for me as proof we can make something good that lasts. I hope the competitive tetris scene lives on forever into the future, and every person in its legacy be remembered wholeheartedly.

    This is the same vibe that the national spelling bee in Washington DC has every year. Ultimately, it’s every contestant against the dictionary not against each other. Having been there two times with my son, it is the absolute coolest “competitive” experience. I am looking forward to going to see CTWC in Pasadena for the first time this year and seeing that same healthy competition.

Each and every attempt to do so will not only end in failure, but utterly backfire.

    I find myself invested and heavily rooting for him. In general, I can appreciate the ever-progressing proficiency and perfection of technique and mastery. Through the years, I’ve been decently competitive in chess, magic the gathering, yugioh, and also as a mixed martial artist trying to increase efficiency and tactical advantage (min/maxing) by fractions of a second in combat with combos and footwork/movement, or draw rate consistency in deck building and theory crafting to find best possible plays in any scenario for yugioh and mtg, and understanding of how a game moves from early to mid to end game in chess and what plays are ever for what pieces in a board state, etc. so although I only ever casually played tetris and got to some higher post 20 levels in Dr. Mario, I can still appreciate the passion, commitment, and innovation the tetris community has had for breaking new ground. And it’s almost like everyone although competing with each other, are also giving each other encouragement and rooting for each other, which is inspiring and I find myself cheering him on in the video as I yell at the screen haha. The spirit of man, his run through the fire, and his resurrection.

    This is the most hype i've ever been about Tetris, this video is that well put together, thank you and thanks to Alex, the actual goat. ... Now for the salty part, I have to write it somehow or I'm gonna go insane. Saying "this run does not count as a legitimate record" because Alex somehow avoided game crash without knowing it is the absolute most brain dead sentence you can ever write about any Tetris run. The run is there, on the same game every other player is playing, livestreamed to your face, him having this knowledge or not doesn't change this fact. The level of delusion should not be possible in this universe. I was mad the first time this was mentioned in the video, now after the run is done I'm actually going crazy

  • @FrayRS

    @FrayRS

    You're absolutely right that it should count as the world record, however, you're wrong about him not knowing he was skipping the crash. He's playing on Tetris Gym, instead of an original cart, so know full well he's skipping the crashes (the uncapped score is a dead giveaway for this) - in the video he's just trolling, pretending that he doesn't know that it won't crash. If anything it makes what he does even more impressive, just spewing utter garbage the WHOLE time whilst playing games that all Tetris players before him could only imagine. You should check out the streams or full VODs, they're really fun and FULL of him just trolling and generally being wild.

    I really love how some world records ended with something that caught the players offguard, Eric's first dusk, Andy's first Charcoal, Scuti's first crash, and Alex's first 810 lines being Greeeen, not Charcoal 😭. Now that everyone knows that after 810 Greeeeen, nothing can stop you from Rebirth (at least on Gym), everyone should be prepared for our first Rebirth on Gym! Also I remember Eric's video did say that you can dodge Charcoal 810 lines by starting at a lower level on OG card, I wonder if the same applies for Gym?

  • @alecrutz6979
