How Speedrunners Conquered The World's Hardest Game
Ойындар
On December 15th, 2007, a 16-year-old developer named Snubby released The World's Hardest Game, one of the most infamous flash games ever created. The game challenged players to not just overcome it, but to truly conquer it by achieving a completion with the fewest number of deaths possible. However, for many, achieving the game's definition of perfection, zero deaths, wasn't enough. This is the story of how speedrunners truly conquered The World's Hardest Game.

I'm the developer of the game. It's an honor to have such a well researched and edited video documenting everything. I can attest that all the info is accurate. I am actually still doing game development, but it will be a few years before my next game is released due to having a job now and it being a really large project. My next game will be called Dungeon Dame and although it's mainly a platformer, there's an overworld which is very similar to world's hardest game, but with a bunch of differences and new features. So the WHG series will not officially be continued any further but Dungeon Dame's overworld will be very similar (and hopefully better). Thanks for watching guys.

I don't understand English so I still only understand a small part of the video, but I am happy to know the progress of the records from the time I was playing to now. I would enjoy this video so much more if I understood English. Huge respect to Shiroma and Pzula for their contributions to this speedrun’s evolution! (Based on the video at least) It seemed like Pzula was the only hope for toppling Shiroma’s record, not only in finding ways to optimize practicing (which is useful to the rest of the community), but to show others that it was indeed possible, which I think probably got more people to go for the record. He wasn’t trading records back and forth with others, he was just continually grinding his PB down until he got it. I don’t know exactly how to phrase it, but that kind of ‘trudging through it alone whilst making discoveries that will later benefit the community’ thing is very commendable And holy shit, respect to Shiroma for being a decade ahead of everyone else despite not even being able to practice individual levels. That’s fucking insane and it goes to show just how incredible of a player he is. I can only imagine what he could’ve pulled off nowadays with the tools at everyone’s disposal. I think we can all agree (as either viewers or players) that Shiroma is *the* chad of The World’s Hardest Game and laid the groundwork for any subsequent runners. And I feel like through Pzula’s dedication to match Shiroma, he made it seem more accessible/realistic for new runners to go for the record. I wonder how much longer it would’ve been before the record got beat if Pzula hadn’t decided slowly climb his way there alone Great video!

The running speed starts slowly, but gets faster each minute after you hear this signal. [beep] A single lap should be completed each time you hear this sound. It's not just the game in the first place, but the history of beating it. Isn't it the real definition of any masterpiece? Being once again perfected to a whole 'nother level each time record is beaten is such a great thing to see and hear nowadays. Did you enjoys as much as i did? THIS VIDEO WAS AN HOUR LONG??!! Man that’s some good content I don’t think I’ve ever watched a KZread video for this long and been this engaged with it completely losing track of the time going by.
It's amazing how people went from barely beating it to barely being able to optimize something any further. Truly astonishing what people can achieve, when they are passionate about something
Maximum, your videos are amazing, you are the one who made me start playing red ball and fancy pants. Also, I'm probably entering the rb speedrunning discord and I'll start my speedruning! Thanks for making my days better, keep up the great content
I remember about a decade ago I was able to finish the game with only 10 deaths and I felt so much accomplishment for it. The music is nostalgic af
Jeez. That was an absolute BANGER of a video. Keep up the hard work!
Being able to even just make it to double digits in this game made you the coolest person in elementary school. Incredible seeing what other people have been able to do with it. I meant to just watch a couple minutes and go do something else, but I ended up staying for the full thing. Amazing job on this video 👏
If anything, this just highlight even more of what an accomplishment Shiroma time was. If he had access to all of these things that the modern speed runners have, just imagine all the things he could have discovered and optimized.
What a high quality video documentary, your channel is criminally underrated.
Crazy how good this Video is about such a simple Game. Great Video!
I’m impressed really, but what shocked me most is how you managed to keep me exited for 54 minutes in a topic that doesn’t have much to be talked about and is new to me! You are a natural presenter
we've finally moved on from red ball to red square, well done!

we finally moved from red square to red triangle virus
It's great seeing how some flash speedrunners run games for nostalgia, and some run it just because it's the only games their system can handle
you deserve so much more support and attention, this is one of the most interesting videos I've ever seen.
God videos like this give me life. Nothing I love more than some random guy giving the history of speedrunning a game I haven’t heard of in years for over an hour. Makes me feel so fucking alive. I have literally no interest in speedrunning outside these videos but they’re so important to me
7:50 Using this OST is among the best advertisements you could've made for Toontown: Corporate Clash lol, this is a jam
This game was a large part of my childhood and it’s honestly amazing to see how far people have come with it.
TTCC music in a speedrun history video of a nostalgic game. I’m in heaven
Speedrunners are such a special kind of person. Thanks for making this!
wall clips depending on window size is the most flash thing ever
God the quality of your videos is so high! I’m so impressed that you do such high-effort, longform content like this. Im always so excited to see one of your videos cause I know you’re gonna give the topic the time it deserves, and stay interesting the whole time!
All these speedrun stories are so great. I usually watch the NES games like Super Mario or Ninja Gaiden but flash games are also fun to watch as well
I was initially just going to put this on as background while playing a game and checking the video out here or there. The way this was presented, and how well the research and pacing of the documentary was, actually made me drop everything else I was doing and sit here watching the whole thing. Didn't even realize how long the video was until it was over. Amazing work! It's crazy how much this game had going on. I remember playing it (probably on Newgrounds) and could never even get close to beating the game. I didn't even know there were leaderboards! Brought back a lot of forgotten nostalgia. Thank you for this awesome piece of art!
Just found your channel, one thing I really liked your speed running video that sets it apart from others like summoning salt is the running counter of all the top runners as a background. Shows how close everyone is together and new people joining the scene. As a lover of speedrunning docs, this one is excellent and i'm def subbing for more!
wasn't even aware this game existed an hour ago after watching a red cube glide around for over 50 mins I can safely say this is one of the most commendable and dedicated speedrun communities to observe. Who knew you could make a gripping documentary on a barebones flash game barely older than myself, you (and of course the runners who set the bar) really have a skill for content creation.
I remember completing this game at 12 after some try hard, old tho fun memories, thanks Snubby.
Amazing documentary. Pacing, editing, narration all top notch. I also love the fact that many of the mentioned record holders you mentioned can be seen in the comment section. All of them have had their fair share in speedrunning the game but I must say I'm most impressed by Shiroma, especially due to the fact that he got his records without level selection.
What a nostalgia trip. TWHG speedruns were indeed an inspiration, and I remember spending a lot of time running the Shift series after watching them. Thanks for making this beautiful documentary on the history of the records with so much detail, it's always fascinating to watch videos like these as an outsider of the community.
anyone here after 3 new records were set in the last 2 weeks?
This video is mind blowing on a few different levels A) I grew up with my friends rage quitting this same game countless times as kids. B) I watched a nearly hour long video about a flash game. And finally C) Watching world records be set on this game is just mind boggling!
Keep the good work, these videos are gold! Bringing back nostalgic flash games from a forgotten era to analyse every single detail about the speedrunners, and with a very good video editting abilities. Just wholesome to watch!
Goated content
Every time I watch this video it amazes me even more. Like most people, I played the game for about a week and never got past level 10. Props to both you and all the speedrunners that made this possible
I wasn’t expecting to sit here for an hour at 1am, watching a video about Speedrunning a 16 year old flash game, but watching those runs had me completely engaged, even though I’m not part of the speedrun community.
