These guys don't just make great paint, their worker owned company has revitalized the area where it is located. The factory for this company is a short drive from my house where I live here in upstate NY and they have a store in it where they give away lots of fun stuff. You can also take a tour and look in their art gallery. It makes for a great day trip. I love QOR. It is my ambition to someday own every watercolor in their line.❤

Wow that's fantastic to hear. I love the paint and use it often. It's great to know they are employing Americans and making this great product right here in the good ol' USA.

I love the bubble mixing areas in the qor line. It makes mixing a lot of fun.

I just bought the 24 tubes of QOR watercolors. I can’t wait to use them! I put them in full pans and then put magnets on the bottom of each pan and stuck them right in the tin they came in. The 24 tube set comes with a large tin.

Awesome Marty! Thanks for showing us this. I continue to love my Qor palette of paint (which came from tubes). Another great paint made in the US. Golden's acrylics have always been top notch so its no surprise their Qor watercolors would be also. My local art shop only carries these, M. Graham, and Winsor Newton.

Oh, rad! I didn’t know they made a little Travel set, but I LOVE that the box still sticks to the visual style of their large tube sets. I love their boxes. Plus, the absurd amount of mixing space is wonderful. I think the color selection here is kind of unusual, but that might be a nice change of pace considering most others are nearly identical. And while I have more paint than I will ever know what to do with......I VERY MUCH have a “portable watercolor kits” problem and desperately want that tin. Why must you tempt me so!

I like to tempt you all with sweet art supplies because I know you love them like I do. :-)

I love QOR Watercolour!!!! When it comes to vivid colours, the QOR are my go-to. I think the fact that they're made by Liquitex hels in the colour pop area helps too. Been waiting for a nice travel it to come out as buying the tubes can get expensive and they are such small tubes.

Very nice! I have the 12 tube introductory set. This brand flows very fast on wet paper and is harder to control. It literally shoots out there ! Makes for great washes. I love my Schmincke & Holbein most. Holbein is one of the most transparent, "although less intense" but very clean colors. A lot of single pigments too but you wont get that in their set. I watched you swatch out the Holbein back then and wondered why you were laying it on so thick with not enough water. It doesn't move with the same amount of water as other brands. You have to use more water because they do not use ox-gall, which makes for heavier gum arabic load. They do not have the highest pigment load so no reason for them to look opaque. Thank you for sharing! I like Qor .

I got these as well and love the portability of this kit as part of my everyday carry. Now if only DS, Sennelier, & Schmincke follow suit!

Daniel Smith just came out with some pans, but I don't know how they are. I bought the Qor 24 set (tubes) and filled a metal palette with them. I love the Qors - so amazingly bright!.

Oh wow, I've been shopping around for a new pan set to replace an old one, was almost totally settled on the Mission Gold set of 12 and then I saw this. I love both brands so I'll have to give this one some thought; I'm really curious to see if "unique" sets, not the regular metal boxes, will become a way for newer brands to distinguish themselves in the market. this qor set is doing so many things right, especially having the info on the set itself, the number of wells available and even having them in different sizes. I do wish the wells were square to make the most of the space. Also a cool green in the set would have been more appreciated. That said, this is a very appealing set. I've never been interested in Qor that much but this set is making me want to try them out.

Hi Marty, very good review ! I have about 30 tubes from Quor and I am just crazy about the transparency, vibrancy...bref, the quality of this product. I started to by the tubes in the thin boxes and I managed to fill up to 47 half-pan in the box 😊. The only thing, I find them to be the most expensive ones. No joke, for only 11ml. But : WOW 😮 are they beautiful !

Hi Chrissie - They are quite expensive, but on par with Daniel Smith and Schmincke in terms of cost. As you say, though, the colors....WOW!

I'm so excited to buy this as I don't have a lot of space so I need compact palettes that still offer good mixing spaces. M Graham and Daniel Smith just need to jump on the bandwagon now

Yea the Daniel smith one was abit... weak. I would have liked to see something more sturdy.

Arteza brand has been showing what they have recently if want to check it out. ( watercolors, gouache, colored pencils, etc.)

Thank you for doing this review. Because of this and a couple of other QoR reviews I have seen, I purchased a couple of tubes of these paints. I really love the Quin Magenta - it's as vibrant as an Opera Rose but without the fading. I also really love their Sap Green. I will plan to get more as needed. I wanted to ask you if you were planning on doing any reviews of any Arteza products? I purchased their water soluble pencils for using in sketchbooks and have been really pleasantly surprised at how well they work. OK, they are not Caran D'Ache or even Derwents, but I spent $24 for a set of 72 and plan to take them on a trip where I will be working in a sketchbook. They require a bit more work to disburse than better pencils, but the color is good and they don't fade out when they dry.

My set should arrive any day now. I was a little disappointed that it contains a Cad. Yellow. As much as I love the Cadmium colors, I've been trying to stay away from toxic paints and purchased Daniel Smith's Cad. hues to replace the ones that I had. Still, looking forward to getting it, not that I need more paint. And a Daniel Smith set? Wow!!

Hi Suzanne - Hard to avoid Cadmium, but using the right precautions you shouldn't experience any health issues.

Marty! I didn’t even finish the video I got so excited I just clicked on the link for wet paint and placed an order immediately for the Qor mini sent and some Daniel Smith tubes on sale and a B creative watercolor pad. I mistakenly put down two Permanent red deeps when I only wanted one... even though I just placed the order I call the customer service number and got immediately connected to Justin in the shipping department. He hadn’t received my order yet but within a few minutes it did come and I switched the second Permanent red deep for an Alizarin Crimson they were the same price.... so I can keep my free shipping! Now Justin informed me that the Qor mini sets are backordered and should be available at the end of next week. Marty you get me too excited for new supplies and I really like dealing with Wet Paint! This is my second order with them as I purchased your drawing set. What a great little company to do business with. You’re so fortunate you can go there in person. Someday I’m just going to have to take a little visit to Minnesota and I will let you know when I visit Wet Paint! Hopefully you’ll be dropping by!

Hi Colleen, It's funny you should mention them talking to you, because I find them great to deal with. I once criticized the fact they sold little tubes in a big tin case, so they shrunk the case...lol. :-)

I ordered this little set 2 weeks ago and was notified later that they were sold out. I am totally bummed to hear recently from Wet Paint that there are production issues at Golden causing a delay in availability. The staff at Wet Paint are super nice and great about updating me, but they say they really don't have any idea when they'll be back in stock. The anticipation is killing me!!:-(

I really like Qor paints, but have been annoyed about the price and tube size. I will never get through those huge 11 ml tubes. I hope to see half pans and or more 5 ml tubes from them, sold open stock. For now Ill pass on this set as I already got most of the colours. But great idea from Golden! Thank you for the review.

Hi Marty, I used to be a member of a watercolor group on Yahoo Groups. One of the members of the group had been sent a few tubes of Qor watercolor paint. She was a retired high school art teacher. I don't know if she made KZread videos; but, she did reviews on her blog. Her comments were very positive about this brand of paint. I know you just got this kit; but, how would you say these pan paints would compare with the tube paints? If they were comparable, I would think it would be economical to refill the pans with paint from the tubes. I really like the vibrancy of the swatches you painted. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Donna - Thanks so much for the note, I always love hearing from you my friend. I would say these are just about exactly the same as the tubes, maybe ever so slightly brighter. I think it's so close it's almost imperceptable to even the trained eye. What the heck, I can't even tell the difference, except that I'm probably biased after using these this past weekend. What great colors and I love the kit itself. I think you're right though, a very economical way is to just refill the pans with your tube paints. I do that with my Schmincke, and it saves me stacks. That is a really well done set. The only set that I've seen to pack quantity into a really small footprint is Cass Art in the UK has an 18 quarter pan set that can fit in your jeans front pocket, smaller than a wallet. The only thing that doesn't quite match up is that it doesn't have that clever mixing area that QOR put together.

Great review as always! LOVE this QoR palette! The only improvement I would like is for them to use standard size half pans so you can interchange colors for different needs. I have all but 3 colors in this set but it is all I can do to keep from ordering this! The only thing holding me back is - do you know if the have empty half pans for sale to be able to interchange colors? Thanks, Paula in Florida

Thankfully, I don't feel I have to run out & buy this one... lol! 😆 I already have all of these colors & a bit more. 😉 I really do like the qor & I have the colors I want in a travel palette now. A little of the paint goes a long way. If someone is looking to buy a professional bright color travel kit, I do think this would be a great buy. Owings Art lol hello bubba Marty! If you were drinking I would expect a couple of sips. 😉 But I can't convince myself to buy. 😣 If this set had colors I didnt have, I would jump on it. The only thing I don't have is the cool tin. I do have all the qor colors this set comes with plus 16 more qor tubes. How many qor colors do you have? I could look at sending you some more. Will wet paint be doing another schminicke sets? I still dont have any of those.

What would u suggest for a inexpensive beginner watercolor travel set, compact yet decent student grade paint?

Yvette Williams I love the little Cotman box. It's tiny, and even comes with a sweet little travel brush with a lid. The paint is pretty good; I started out with it when I was first learning, and still use it! I actually have a couple of these kits, and have refilled them with professional paints. They are usually around 12 - 13 dollars on Amazon, but always under $15. Perfect for travel! Hope this helps!

Yvette Williams P.S. Just checked Amazon, and that box is called the Pocket Sketchers Box, and it is $16.45. I've never seen it more than $15, and usually paid about $12. If you want it, I'd suggest placing it in your cart and leaving it there, checking every day or so. If you do that, you can usually get a better price. :)

It's comparison with sennelier, and even with some others too, may not really be fair enough. I've got both and did such comparison side by side on the same paper and have found that sennelier is noticeably look richer and more luminous. I kindly suggest you to make these comparisons on the same paper and at the same time to get a more truthful idea.

Nice video, as always, Marty. :) As far as I know, these are Qor's first venture into the world of pan watercolours. How well did you feel they rewet when you began painting with them? Did you need to spray them with water and let it sit for a few seconds, as one often must often do with Winsor & Newton, or were they good to go right away? I would be especially interested to hear how they compared with your favourite of Schmincke, in terms of how easily they reactivate. Schmincke pans, in my experience, are among the easiest paints to rewet and are a joy to use. I agree with you concerning other brands venturing into this particular market and I expect the likes of Daniel Smith will soon follow suit. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Hi Conor Casey 0 They rewet very easily, no need to spray. They are comparable to Schmincke, but but I'd rank them lower. I just like the consistency of Schmincke and they don't over do it with brighteners. That said, this Qor paint has moved into my top 10. :-)

I really liked this review, great work. While i acknowledge your excellent review of the aquafine paints by daler and rowney, every time you use them as a comparison to artist quality paints i find myself asking why you havent done a review on their artist quality watercolour paints. There are so few youtube vids about them and I've generally had good experiences with them. Any chance we will see a video about them soon?

great video! :) at least here in europe the qor paints, like the golden acrylic paints, are way overpriced. I go with old holland watercolor paints if i want them very vibrant and schmincke for a more classical watercolor look.

Great choices. Over here the old holland are very expensive.

Qor is nice and vibrant but it's almost impossible to get smooth color to color transitions like on your other swatch cards because the synthetic ox gall or aquazol in them makes wacky veins with wet on wet techniques

Very happy with the paint in this little set, and appreciated your review. But I am not so happy with the silicone insert - what was the point? When I tried to add a pan of a convenience color, I discovered there is no way to attach it to the silicone -- my usual method of blue tack, or any other type of removable putty didn't stick at all. I've been told by my helpful hardware man that there are special glues for use with silicone, but they are expensive and permanent.

They say you can clean that silicone insert to original white. Yes, the fact that you can't really add pans, is a drawback, I agree. You can use silicone adhesive. I've heard some people have had luck with that.

Thanks for responding, Marty! I guess you can clean the silicone to the original white, but ever since I've found that I can clean any of my metal palettes (or even the plastic ones) back to their original white/pale gray by using one of those Magic Eraser sponge-type things, I'm not so impressed by that feature. I may do a little more shopping for a glue, since I love the paint, but really need a few other options in a travel set. The guy at ACE tells me it will be trial and error, unless I can tell him exactly what plastic the half pans are made of, since the silicone glues will bond to all silicone products, but won't bond to all plastics. So, another adventure in the never-ending quest to find the perfect travel palette! :)

I tend to agree with you Karen.

Just went to the QoR website - they don't sell empty half pans and the description says standard size removable half pans. Could you check and see if your standard pans actually fit? I want this! Thanks!

I spoke with someone at Golden and they said they would check about standard empty pans fitting into the QoR mini palette. In the meantime I called Wet Paint and Kate was wonderful and checked the pan situation and said you could squeeze in a standard slightly larger empty pan exchanged in the space, but probably only one in each row. For me, probably enough swapping options! Later in the day, QoR called me back and confirmed what Wet Paint said, but I also asked if they could sell their size of empty half pans, or at least sell replacement colors that you could pop out and save and change the color. They were so nice and said they would look into it. They seemed genuinely happy to please their customers!

Its interesting because other people have slated these paints, as they leave a ring around the painting if you are doing wet on wet . So it can look unprofessional on a finished painting. have you come across this at all when doing skies, beach scenes for example ?

Another great review Marty. May I make a suggestion? Your lighting has improved leaps and bounds but I find I'm having difficulty with your camera (phone) movements. I assume you are hand holding and although the image quality is excellent, the stability and therefore the ability to really see what you are showing is not good. This is also compromised by the panning. I know you just want us to see everything. Would you be willing to consider locking your camera phone down on a small tripod? You can still get tight shots. I really appreciate all that you do to share with us so I'm hoping you take no insult from this. Have a great day! Patricia

Hi Patricia - Thanks for the feedback, all very good for sure, and appreciated. I totally get what you're saying and I mostly film with a stationary camera. In this video, I used my iPhone, which improves the lighting considerably, but I had to hold it by hand for the tight shots and the movement does bother some folks. I tried to keep it to a minimum, but not always successfully. I'll be mindful of this going forward and try harder to keep shots stationary. Thanks so much for the kind feedback. Quality paints or not I think that's a little overpriced. I'm a fan of Qor, but not for that price point. Great review overall though!

If pans are smaller ,we will not be able to buy new pans to put other colors in set. Not good. But maybe these pans will fit in painters palette.

Hi Marjorie - I need to try to see if the Schmincke standard pan fits in this kit. Not sure if it will or not, but to my eye they seem slightly smaller.

Definitely of interest, but since I just made the leap into Daniel Smith, this will have to wait. I've been wanting to try QoR for some time (along with others), so yeah, on the list, for sure. The colors look great and I really love how you presented it and walked us through it. Can you imagine a DS pan set? People would go bananas for it! Thanks for such a terrific review, Marty! :)

How old is this video? There have been tons of artist quality portable watercolor sets available for years and years. In fact, there’s a tiny quarter pan set with 14 colors. Winsor and Newton also have had portable sets for years. Sets that fold out too. Many, many other companies have portable pan kits available too. This idea is not new by any means. Maybe this video is years and years old and I’m just now watching it?

Hi monique - this video is new and I wasn’t saying portable watercolor kits were new, I was saying that it was new for this type of company that traditionally only produces tube paint and not pans. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. 👍🏻😃

An iPhone is good for filming, but hard to hold. Hopefully, you'll get the hang of it for future videos unless you like filming with one hand. ;)

Interesting. I was interested in buying these, but who wants to buy a product known to cause cancer!!???!!!????? Think I'll stick to what I already have. Paint a gorgeous pocture with these paints, then start painting on your coffin!!!!!
