QoR Watercolor Review //Golden Artists watercolors
I have been using QoR watercolor for a few years. I originally review the high chroma set when they first came out and I feeling love! The more I used these clean transparent colors the more I love them.
QoR watercolors can be purchased in 11ml individual tubes, 5ml tube sets of 6, 8, 12 and 24 as well as a 12 half pan set. amzn.to/2OqFoPN
My pick for the best value is the 24 tube set: amzn.to/2K0t85i
Pros:
great flow
Dryes down hard but rewets easily
clean vibrant color
the tin the sets come in are great for storing your paints and using as a palette
Price is affordable in sets
Cons:
The 11ml tubes that are available individually are a bit pricey but the paint goes a long way so it is about the same as other artist grade colors. I bought the sets for this reason.
These are wonderful artist grade sets, I personally purchased all 3 intro sets of 6 and the 24 set and Golden sent me 6 large tubes of my choosing. Affiliate links used in this review.

I'm in Love with the Qor paints lol.😍 Maybe because they are my first watercolors and I don't have any comparisons? But I just think they are gorgeous. I didn't care for the tin at first but I've found a great use for it... I like to use it for traveling or out in the yard. I let the paint plops dry in the bubble lid then my pens and pencils and such fit nicely in the bottom, it works out really well. Thank you for doing this one!😀👍

thanks! I love the tins!At first I put dabs of paint in the lids, tiny ones, and it took forever to use them up but I didn't want to waste it so I kept painting until I used it up then filled pans. You made an excellent choise for first paints, now you won't have to suffer inferior brands:)

I love the qor watercolors too! I love painting deep skies and galaxies and their indigo is wonderful for that. It’s still a blue but very deep and moves so well in water. I only wish they had a opera color as that’s one of my favorites to mix with.

Those non-lifting glassy paints aren’t a Cobalt thing, it’s a silicate thing for the most part and a phosphate thing in the case of Cobalt violet. Silicates and phosphates in particular repel water and attract themselves so in the pan, the pigment “cakes” together and gets harder to lift when dry. 15 min or use warm water - either will solve it ;)

long yarn Wet the pan that won’t liftoff really well so it has a little puddle visible on top of the paint - a mister or a pipette make this easy - and leave 15 mins. Using warm water just speeds it up a lot to a couple of minutes.

Hey Lindsay. I love your tutes on just about anything. Your Honesty about reviews of products you have been given to review is so welcome. I want to know the truth about products and you provide and it! I likely know by now that most brands react wonderfully with these watercolors. As Irit shows in her QOR video, these paints will literally push other brands and colors away making beautiful effects. If this is new to you, try it.

Thanks for this work. I have 9 or 10 QOR paints. I really like the trio of yellows 129, 154 and 150. One quirk with the paints (from my limited experience) is that if you use salt, they tend to leave a tiny bit of pigment underneath the salt (more like flowers than snowflakes :-) ).

Yippee, Fantasia ballerina flowers. I got the high chroma set and went, ooooo aaaahhh I want more! These and Sennelier to replace my student grades as I use them up. Chomping at the bit really. Might just have to give my student grades away to make room. Hmmm. That could work😂😂😂

Have you noticed that when you mix Qor with other brands, you can put primary’s right up and flowing into each other without getting mud? I’ve also made some gorgeous light blue sky with W&N and bright yellow qor bursting through and my sky didn’t turn green. It does the most amazing things and opens up all kinds of new possibilities. I’ve heard people say they’re not for beginners, but beginners often get mud and that’s something that doesn’t happen with qor, but like all things they take time to get used to for those who are familiar with regular watercolor and like to lift, etc…

I just bought the Qor 24 set plus a tin with whole pans as a birthday present to me from myself. I also bought a couple of extra colors since I didn't want to include the white and black in the tin. I have fallen in love with their colors since they really are vibrant and since there is little to no color shift when they dry. One other color that you might want to try (which isn't Qor, but Daniel Smith) is Aussie Red Gold, which has a mass tone of orange but tints out to yellow. It seems like the perfect color if you want to paint Koi fish. The only "catch" is that you need to use it on Arches or Fabriano or another good paper or the tinting out thing won't work. I might substitue this color instead of transparent orange on my pallet since it gives essentially, 2 colors instead of one.

Lovely painting! I am new to watercolor and still learning. One QUESTION: I noticed when you are getting your colors sometimes you take a brush that has one color on it already and you dip it in a pan of another color. Does that taint the color in that pan? How do you keep it from changing the color in that pan? Mixing colors is challenging for me because I don’t want to corrupt my paints.

  • @thefrugalcrafter

    @thefrugalcrafter

    6 жыл бұрын

If the paint in the pan is dried down the most that can be contaminated is the top layer and it is more likely to remove color than deposit it so I waste less than rincing inbetween.

Actually... it is NOT COMMON for Raw Sienna to have any sort of opacity or haziness, as you say it. The reason why most people use Raw Sienna is because it is a soft transparent and clean yellow ochre-ish color and they use it as a replacement for their muddy and opaque Yellow Ochres.

Rrally? Often when I see raw sienna it is a mix of py42 or py43 and a red pigment so I avoided it choosing a single pigment yellow ochre. Maybe the milling is finer in a raw sienna than a yellow ochre then having such a common pigment? I just always went for a yellow ochre (and it is one of my most used colors.) What ate your thoughts?

Right, the raw sienna here is PY43 (natural yellow ochre) instead of PBr7 like it should be so that's why it has that quality. It seems like QoR doesn't have a real raw sienna in their range which is kind of weird.

OK gotche, that makes sense, the same pigment as a PBr7 burnt sienna but nor burnt right? A have actually seen many raw siennas in pro granges that are a PY42 mix like the pro winsor & Newton raw sienna is a mix of PR101 and PY42 and I figured it was a standard practice (that's why I never bother with that color since I have yellow ochre.) I wonder if the color a company ses for their burnet sienna affect what they use for Raw Sienna as M Graham uses PBr7 for both burnt and raw and W&N uses pr101 for it burnt sienna and raw sienna. Thank you for teaching me something:)
