Brand by Brand: QoR | Watercolor Palette Series

Hello everyone and welcome to our limited palette series: Brand by Brand. In this series, we’re going to be building limited watercolor palettes, one brand at a time.
In my Skillshare class, How to Set Up a Custom Watercolor Palette, I share my basic palette “recipe” that I start with when setting up just about new palette. However this series is going to diverge and expand on that basic palette recipe, allowing me to feature unique colors specific to each brand. The goal is to introduce you to a functional 12-color palette from each brand, while putting emphasis on some special colors you may not find elsewhere.

Glad you took a look at this set. I took a bold dive using QOR as my first pro watercolor set with Daniel Smith for the browns. What I can say about working with QOR is that making moods and backgrounds is so easy, quick, and smooth. I can get my background colors in right before layering foreground. "Controlling" this paint for me works when I plan my wet on wet vs dry. Making sure an area is dry is key. Gradients with water brushes are also super smooth for me that I can't see the strokes. And fair warning: Paynes Grey and Diox Violet don't need a lot of water to unleash their dark potential. One drop is enough. My favorite colors are the Quin Magenta and Gold and Pthalo blue. But Paynes Grey is so much fun to work with. They way it spreads in a water droplet is fun to watch.

Thanks for this great video, Denise! You're already aware of QOR being my favorite. Their trans. pyrrole orange, payne's gray, azo yellow, & cobalt teal are my go-to's in regard to those specific pigments. I started with their mini tin, fell entirely in love, & later made a larger studio version for bigger wet in wet pieces and experiments. What I actually use-up most, more than even paint or paper, is their synthetic ox gall. That aquazol is pure magic when you want to watch your watercolors paint themselves! I'm aware it's not for everyone, as it truly moves like no other paint I've experienced - but that's exactly why I love it. Coming from a draftsman's perspective, where everything is precise, exact, controlled, & heavily detailed, this was exactly what I was looking for pursuant to the artistic sense of duality. 💕

I really wanted to love Qor.. they are an amazing company and they're online presence is awesome. I purchased a full palette and attempted to use them as I would regular watercolors. They are not "regular" water colors. They are bright, vibrant, but can appear dead and lifeless when dry. The aquazol creates an experience that is more like painting with alcohol ink. I'll say that again.. using them is like painting with alcohol ink. The pigments are so finely ground that they sink right into the paper and cannot be moved. Use too much water and they flow uncontrollably. You have to get the water content perfect to get the results that you like. I really don't want to turn anyone off the company, but I would seriously do some research and read the impressions of other artists before investing. You can learn to use them, but they will be used a little bit differently than a traditional gum arabic bound watercolor. Not necessarily good or bad, but different.. anyone, one dudes two cents. Oh, your zebra painting is AWESOME!!

Thanks for sharing this opinion! I have only used samples of Qor watercolors that I traded with another artist, but I felt the colors I had were very cold and lifeless. I paint mostly landscapes and urban sketches, so I use a mix of vibrant and natural watercolor paints, but found that Qor colors were unnaturally bright for me. Maybe I'd feel differently if I worked with them more and learned how to mix them, however despite Qor having lovely, vibrant color and moving well in water, I'm passing for now. They always look better on KZread videos than on my (100% cotton!) watercolor paper.

@@everartokelli I do think paper plays a huge part in how these appear once they're dry. I do mostly landscapes and seascapes and while I prefer to use cotton paper, I've gotten much better results from QoR paints on wood pulp paper or on handmade bright white paper. Additionally, because they can be pretty staining, I can do more layers with QoR on wood pulp paper than I normally would using other paints. I will say, however, that when I've used mine, it's mostly been in a journal. And QoR paints are a bit expensive to buy for just using in a journal no one is ever going to see.

I've found the phthalo blue to also cauliflower/flow on the page a lot so just be aware. But that is typical of these paints. I've also seen a lot of people comment that they don't rewet well, but I have been using them dried in my palette for two years and have never found that to be an issue for me. The only ones I've got that actually list the pigments are Shinhan PWC, Holbein, and Mijello Mission Gold. And Renesans, but they don't make a dot card anymore (they do painted charts now). It's sold in two separate sheets, and each one is €9 and a bit. Artemiranda also sells a hand painted chart for like €12, but I don't have it (yet 😅). Lack of manipulation skills of Water to pigment ratio, an understanding of pigments and how they mix. ‘How to make them work for you’. You guys make paints come alive I can’t. But the crazy quality of Qor sounds like it’s going to be fun and they might do things I am not able to make my paints do.maybe they will create the art I can’t.😂😂😂 . thank you for starting this series again. Great vid Denise. Glad to see that you're doing well. Now to a total non-sequitur. 😁 What nationality does the name Soden originate? I've got my top 5 guesses; Norway, Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands and Germany. Am I close?

I've heard England ("southdown" or the town Sowtown), German (the town Badsoden), and French ("soudan") origins, though I don't know which mine specifically came from as we're quite a mix, though likely not French. It's unique, that's for sure!
