Swatching Qor Colours - Earth and High Chroma Sets 🎨

Hello dear friends! One of the orders I've been expecting finally arrived, so in today's video, I am swatching two sets of watercolors: a High Chroma Set and an Earth Set, both by the brand Qor. I hope you enjoy the video and would love to hear your thoughts on Qor watercolors :)
I bought both sets from Jackson's Art Supplies and you can find them here:

Qor really shines, at least to me, even you mix it wet in wet with other more traditional watercolor paint. It is a bit pushy and makes amazing backgrounds.

Your swatching videos are wonderful! I love seeing how much you get out of the paints. They always look lovely! I was especially interested seeing your QOR video because I've had these two QOR palettes for about five years, but have yet to open them as I had doubts about the colors and thought they wouldn't be especially useful for me. Your swatches looked great, and I would love to see what you can coax out of them in a mixing video. At about the same time, I also ordered the Introductory Set of 12, which are incredibly intense, utterly delicious, and I can't get enough of them. The colors in that set are: Nickel Azo Yellow, Hansa Yellow Light, Quin. Gold Deep, Pyrrole Red Light, Quin. Magenta, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Phthalo Blue (Green Shade), Ultramarine Blue, Viridian Green, Yellow Ochre (Natural), Burnt Sienna (Natural), and Payne's Gray. They are beautiful colors; blend well, and are absolutely explosive in wet on wet applications. You're right about them drying chunky. I usually squeeze some out on a mixing palette and have noticed that, too. I've never tried putting them in pans, but now they are coming in half pan sets, so I've picked up a couple of those to try soon. A bit about the binder QOR uses (from Google): Aquazol (Poly(2-ethyl-w-oxazoline) was first patented in 1977 by Dow® Chemical. It's a watersoluble polymer designed as a substitute to gum arabic. Aquazol is said to be able to hold more pigment than gum arabic.

I LOVE QoR watercolors. And to avoid too much overflow, I squeeze the sides just the tiniest bit BEFORE I open them. Might not work every single time but I believe it helps keep the flow to a minimum. Yes, I'm talking to you Transparent Brown Oxide. One of my favorite colors by them is Bohemian Green Earth. I think you might like it. My absolute favorite (right now) is Ardois Gray. Makes me think Buff Titanium and graphite had a baby. ❤

Yes, new tubes will show their enthusiasm and squirt out. Sometimes squeezing the sides does help. When it doesn’t, so bought a stackable circular (about 3 in in diameter) plates or palate with 5 dishes and a lid. You can get all white or a nice Chinese motif. I love it for runaway paints from new tubes. And stays safe for when you need it. Amaz. Has it.

I’m so excited to see you swatch some Stoneground paints someday. I’m fairly new to watercolour and my husband bought me a beautiful Daniel Smith palette for Christmas and I have been slowly adding to it but my Canadian heart soooooo swoons over the Stoneground paints when I get to the art store. I haven’t let myself buy any yet for fear of what will happen to my credit card.

I think QoR are great as long as you are aware of what they are going to bring to the party. But the darkness of the Naples was a surprise, compared to other brands, and appears on your swatch much darker than the Jackson’s QoR swatch + even golden’s own QoR swatch. Useful for reference before adding it to the basket, ty.

The teal is beautiful, but it looks like a muted version of teal. So I think if you just take it for what it is and don't compare it to other teals that are bright and vibrant I'm sure you'll find a use for it! That Naples Yellow is....... unique. It is beautiful but I seriously thought you were swatching some form of yellow ochre at first cuz I had the volume down, lol! It is beautiful too though. I love the way Qor watercolors shoot across the page and make really interesting patterns. I like to use them when I don't need the work to be exact (like a portrait). That Aquazol they put in it makes it a watercolor that you really can't expect to control at all so I love them for landscapes, skies, blurry backgrounds, or those really loose interpretations of subjects.

When I first tried qor I was underwhelmed with the swatches, however I think the paint truly shines when you actually paint with it rather than just swatching it, also I'm a bit biased but I think the paint works best on hot press paper 😊 But I agree with you on the teal, I was so surprised when I swatched all my teals side by side and true qor's teal was the greenest.

Dear Lily Moon, As said below, the characteristics of Qor haven't had the right kind of swatch to allow them to shine and move! The Payne's grey moves like woosh! The best woosh in watercolour. You don't have my favourite Qor colour! So, they are good with charging a wet spot. The more water the better! Wetter than damp! Full and heavy body brushes, that drip to the page. Use spray bottles, salt, and the right kind of paper. I think some of these colours. For abstraction in larger pieces. Can be used neat with a palette knife, then spray it! I am pretty sure that these will separate and give you a little "edge". Use gauze, lifting techniques. Larger works can be done quickly with the woosh doing all the work. See KZreadrs, by looking for these qualities in your searches. Better in a palette first, then into a wet puddle, or mix on the page. They are fun, pushy colours. Sometimes, with these, use just one colour, a piece by isolation, with a huge range for tonal work. Or create a set like this with each colour. One doesn't need much pigment, so you can dry them in a pan. They last a long time, worth every cent. Why not take a photo of this, and other comments, when you go to the art store or ready for online purchases, you have it, then it is easy to find.... Thanks so much for the video. Lovely colours. @@lilymoonart Different papers will also have different effects. The way the paper is cut with the grain or against it also changes the wet paper direction for the paint to follow. With Arches it will suck the water in, quickly, so it isn't a great paper me thinks. But try perhaps Fabriano Artistico CP by the full large sheet, 56 x76 I think it is. Why not buy the 3 get one free in a pack, in traditional white, and just have a large space to work in..... You could do a helpful video with a few samples of paper so we all will know how to get the best woosh with Qor. I would also try them with some of the best granulating paints, Me thinks they may separate, with viscosity. Paper samples from Jacksons under the watercolour pad section. Speaking of this seller; I am having trouble seeing Jacksons UK, from Australia. Recently Jacksons Australia changed their website? now it is crap, and my searches only pull up US Jacksons....? @@lilymoonart I don't have qor high chroma (except their quin magenta) but I have their intro 12 set. I like them, they're pretty spectacular movers. Their Paynes grey is lovely. And they're very clean colours that mix well. I have their quin gold deep and nickel Azo yellow which I'm pretty sure is the 2 pigments in their quin gold. Mixing them on the paper as separate paints, gives wonderful results. I don't mind having very bright colours as long as they mix well to knock back their vibrancy. The only thing with how fast they move is that as more of a beginner, creating soft edges is harder because as soon as you introduce water to the edge you want to soften or lose, the fast moving binder in the paints takes a tint of the colours right to the edge of your water.
