    Oh man, I love these artist sample cards! It’s so cool learning the colors other artists are into. :D as always, thanks for all the info and artist promotion! Every time you introduce us to new creators it’s always super cool and and honestly a better introduction to what is essentially art history, but without one of the ninja turtles and fun-to-say nonsense like Rococo.

    Here in 2023, Andy Evansen uses mostly Winsor & Newton paint. From his website: “My palette consists of Paynes Gray, French Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Turquoise Light (Holbein), Neutral Tint, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna (Holbein), Quinacridone Gold, Cadmium Lemon, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Opera, Cadmium Red, and Lavender (Holbein) All are Winsor & Newton unless otherwise specified”.

    Always a treat to find a new Owings Art video, but for this... well, what a fantastic introduction to this palette. I've held off on going the Daniel Smith route for a long time, but I'm starting to get the itch to try it. This might be a great way to try before I buy. Great video Marty! 😁 I was looking, I have at least 12 of the 18 colors. I know I don't gave the olive green, but I really like that one. Though looking at it closer, it is similar the azo green I have. I have been using cascade green a lot lately. I also don't have the cobalt blue, but I can't remember if I have the cobalt teal for DS. I had to go back and look. I also dont have the perm alizarin crimson or the yellow & the umber. 😉 I got an email yesterday, saying the field kits had shipped... yay! 😃 They are supposed to be here by monday. I hope you are keeping warm my friend. TC! 🤗

    Hi Val - It's just my opinion so you can ignore it and save some money, but you should def have Alizarin crimson, umber and cobalt blue. :-) Hey that's good news, I was getting a little worried with S&B told Wet Paint the sketchbooks were on backorder, but apparently they came through. Thank you for buying them. Don't be offended if you get more thank you notes from me. I filled one out for each set. :-) Hope you and Jason are having a good holiday season my friend. I rewatched your video on the Qor palette...did I not hear you say that you will be putting together a watercolor kit with Wet Paint, like your sketch kit(which I also have!) or perhaps in a comment? Those colors are really pretty. I already have 4 of them; not the dot cards, the paints. At one time, Daniel Smith did have a dot card that included over 200 dots on it. I ordered it and it disappeared. Maybe I gave it away and just didn't remember who I gave it to; but, I no longer have it. I have a small tin of the Schminke Horodam watercolors and ordered it from wetpaint.com. I think it was one you had demonstrated. The set was supposed to be a split-primary set; but, the blues that were included do not seem like they are warm and cool versions of blue. Overall, they seem like nice paints; but, my go to paints will most likely be the Daniel Smith paints.

    Daniel Smith's dot palette, I tried it and I was very disappointed with the dot sampling. If I had to rely on the dot palette only to judge it then I would say no. However, to be fair I I have not tried the tubes. Most of the Daniel Smith dots were like rubber and would not break down enough to try them. The Daniel Smith's colors are beautiful and the sparkles are interesting. I guess I have been spoiled by M. Graham watercolors. No reflection on Andy or Marty at all. I may have gotten an old card. Thank you Marty for the videos and your time. Hugs!

    Hi Connie - Thank you for the feedback. Certainly M. Graham are very excellent paints and the choice of many great Watercolorists for sure. I had no trouble with the Daniel Smith sample dots, as seen in the video. The only color that was somewhat muted in my opinion was the Minnesota Pipestone. The fact that most of these colors are single pigment and really light fast, helps make the case for them. That said, every Artists has a preference for the watercolor paint they like. For me, it's Schmincke, but I still love the M. Graham, DS and Senellier. Hope you are enjoying the holidays Connie. All the best ~Marty

    Hi Marty, thanks for the great video. I don't mean to cut down the great state of Minnesota, but "pipestone" is one of the oddest paints that I've encountered. It seems really weak and the hue is a bit blah. Being a Michigander, it's a bit like grinding up a Petoskey stone :-) Do you have any comments on why the artist would include pipestone in his palette?

  • @owingsart

    @owingsart

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Alan - You're right about that, but I can imagine a single pigment would have something to do with it. Also, you wouldn't have to water down another company to achieve this color, but keep the transparency. In all honesty, I agree that it isn't an exciting color, but since it's my homie color, I like it. :-) ~Marty

    Your video is very confusing. Andy Evansen makes it clear in all his videos and in his workshops that he uses Winsor and Newton paints, except for two colors from Holbein. He does not use the colors that you have said that he uses, and he makes a special point of saying that he does not use any tube greens, preferring to mix his greens from the blues and yellows in his palette, saying that tube greens are too unnatural looking. Google him here on KZread and watch one or more of his excellent demos. He goes over the colors on his palette, and discusses how he mixes them during the course of the videos. Your video would have a lot of people searching out and buying Daniel Smith colors that Andy does not use. This is no reflection on Daniel Smith paints. I use a lot of them myself. I think it would be better to take this older video down than to mislead people. I'm not pointing this out to be critical or mean-spirited, but rather to be helpful. Here are the colors that he uses direct from his workshop website: "My palette consists of Neutral Tint, Paynes Gray, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Quinacridone Gold, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Lemon. (*These are suggested colors, you’re welcome to use what you have )"

    I’m sorry if you were confused or disappointed, but this is a set of Daniel Smith paints that Andy uses or used and he picked the colors for the set himself. I know Andy personally, we actually live in the same State and I’ve watched many of his demos and his watercolor workshops, he’s great and I’m a huge fan. If he wanted to correct me on this, I’d hope he would. Thanks for the note though I appreciate what you’re saying.
